I assumed that Abbott had been hired to secure a US-UK trade deal. That is the only one the Tories want, which won't be a deal but a sell out of the UK population so that they can enrich themselves.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/09/2020 14:33

USA FTA - adds just 0.16% GDP over 15 years
No wonder he won't get paid for it
except probably a peerage to keep stacking the HoL

Peregrina · 05/09/2020 14:40

It's not the amount of money it adds which matters - it's the propaganda value: "Look at us, we have got a GREAT deal with the USA." Small print - bang goes your NHS and food standards.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 05/09/2020 14:46

Presumably Abbott won't be asked to get involved in UK-Australia trade talks.

Then again...

ListeningQuietly · 05/09/2020 14:53

I was talking to somebody the other day who works for a very famous outsourcing company.
They are about to shut 2/3 of their offices because the staff much prefer working from home permanently.
Nothing Johnson says or does will alter the changes in society that have happened over the last 7 months.

Clavinova · 05/09/2020 15:37

According to Abbot Wokies who call "misogynist" or "homophobic"
really mean that he is a practising Catholic.

I thought those were Daniel Hannan's words;

"Wokies who call @ HonTonyAbbott "misogynist" or "homophobic" really mean that he is a practising Catholic.Tony is a good and generous man who still works tirelessly for Australia's indigenous communities. He knows how to get ambitious trade deals done. We are lucky to have him."

...virginity is the greatest gift you can give someone” (to other people's daughters).

2010:
TONY ABBOTT: "I was asked what's the advice that I would give to my own kids. Now, obviously a parent talking to his or her own children is going to be saying different things than someone talking to the world at large, so to speak."

"As the parent of teenage kids, I wrestle with these things. I think all parents do under those circumstances, and I was trying to give an honest response to a journalist who I think was asking honest questions."

"Mr Abbott says he's more likely to face questions about so-called moral dilemmas than other politicians because his past includes three years training to be a priest."

"The adolescent psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg says he was initially concerned when he heard about Mr Abbott's remarks. Now the comments have been put in context, Dr Carr-Gregg says it's refreshing to hear a politician, and father, speak in this way. Here's a politician who isn't tip-toeing around this. He's clearly got a value base and he's articulating it, and I guess it's up to mums and dads across Australia as to whether or not they wish to follow. So I guess I'm feeling, well, no-one's left in any doubt as to where he stands."

Joe Biden is also a practising Catholic, is he called woke too?

"Former Vice President Joe Biden expressed strong opposition to gay marriage in a newly-surfaced clip from 2006."

www.wibc.com/blogs/chicks/2006-clip-of-joe-bidens-opposition-to-gay-marriage-surfaces/

"Trump Is a Disaster for Abortion Rights—but Joe Biden Can’t Be Trusted to Fight for Choice. Until last year, Joe Biden supported a law that restricted federal funding for abortion—and his flip-flop smacks of political expediency."

Do they work for Capita? They are closing over 1/3 of their offices. Not sure if the PM will take umbrage at that and give them less Gov contracts.

DrBlackbird · 05/09/2020 16:04

Never mind whatabout Joe Biden. He has not been appointed as a UK Trade Envoy. And instead of rushing to defend Mr Abbott Clav, do you honestly believe that virginity is the greatest gift a girl can offer? Do you applaud and support this as a view that you want your government appointees to hold? You hold no concerns at all about a politician publicly espousing these privately held beliefs?

Clavinova · 05/09/2020 16:21

Never mind whatabout Joe Biden.

It wasn't me who brought up Joe Biden!

do you honestly believe that virginity is the greatest gift a girl can offer?

No - I'm not religious. Although in fact his specific comment on virginity could apply to either sex; "he referred to virginity as "the greatest gift" that you could give to someone."

You hold no concerns at all about a politician publicly espousing these privately held beliefs?

No - and certainly not from 2010.

Peregrina · 05/09/2020 17:00

It was me who brought up Joe Biden. It's just that he's not referred to as woke as far as I know, so Hannan is talking out of his arse.

The issue of abortion is a thorny one for a lot of practising Catholics. But it's easy for men to preach to women. I could not but help think that's the easy way out for a man who gets a woman pregnant - he cops out, passes the buck to her, and if she doesn't have the baby doesn't have to pay maintenance for the child. Yes, onto a winner there.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-border-plans-trade-deal-uk-it-boris-johnson-a9703396.html

Attempts to get the UK’s borders ready for trade after Brexit is completed on 1 January are “unmanageable”, according to a leaked government document.

Many protesters wore Union flag face masks

I saw a chap wearing one in Sainsburys today.

Not really my cup of tea. I still think anyone who needs to fly their own flag in their own country is a tad more insecure than I am.

Have to add a big thank you to Andrew Maxwell on the News Quiz for introducing me to Irish phrase and concept "flag shagger" Grin. Continuing a long and proud tradition - not counting Joyce - of the English language being at it's most poetic, vibrant and colourful when wielded by people who aren't English.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/09/2020 17:46

Ironic that as a subject of one of Boris tomes, it's impossible not to imagine the good Dr. making mincemeat of Boris in any battle of wits ...
pointythings · 05/09/2020 18:09

Union Jack facemask in ASDA today as well - the demographic was a fit too. I was quite happy with my floral number, but wished I'd worn my Pride one.

prettybird · 05/09/2020 18:13

I have a tartan one that I'm fond of Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 05/09/2020 18:18

Seems that many doctors are frustrated and angry, like our Squid

www.theguardian.com/society/2020/sep/05/more-than-1000-doctors-want-to-quit-nhs-over-handling-of-pandemic

Over 1,000 doctors plan to quit the NHSS^ because they are disillusioned with the government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic
and frustrated about their pay, a new survey has found.

The doctors either intend to move abroad, take a career break, switch to private hospitals or resign to work as locums instead

borntobequiet · 05/09/2020 18:32

I liked the term flag shagger as well. Also the fact that anti-maskers in the RoI are led by the male Corr (of the Corrs) and opposed by Jedward.
As someone whose Irish relatives could be characters written by Graham Linehan (well some of them), I do so appreciate this.

Peregrina · 05/09/2020 18:52

I have an EU mask, but it's not all that comfortable so I have abandoned it for the cheapy ones from a discount shop.

Now Waitrose, I saw, did expensive designer numbers!

mrslaughan · 05/09/2020 19:23

Have you guys read "this is going to hurt" ?
I thought it was recommended on here? I found it harrowing - and that was before they had to then dig into their already depleted reserves to deal with a Pandemic

mrslaughan · 05/09/2020 19:26

I am asthmatic and after trying many fabric masks I have had to resort to the disposable ones. Spent a fortune on fabric ones but everyone triggers my asthma - I think very quickly the humidity builds up behind them.... that's my theory anyway. I am not particularly happy about it - but I would prefer to wear a mask than not.

yoikes · 05/09/2020 19:27

Yes, I have.
It was a vety interesting read bit tbh I struggled massively with the rampant misogyny in it.
No shock to any woman on here who has accessed gynae services in the UK, I'm sure but I found it hard to see it written down.

yoikes · 05/09/2020 19:29

I find fabric masks tricky to breathe in, too but mine must be psychosomatic as I don't have a lung condition.

I've got a few I can manage with or I use disposable ones.

pinkbalconyrailing · 05/09/2020 19:35

wrt masks I find the ones that are further away from your nose & mouth. like a coffee filter.
