The issue with NI is that - as both Unionists & Nationalists agree - Brexit is artificially accelerating the move to reunification

Haste is not good either

wherearemychickens · 06/09/2020 21:53

Has anyone else seen Peter Foster's thread this evening?

wherearemychickens · 06/09/2020 21:53

We will be international pariahs at this rate.

SabrinaThwaite · 06/09/2020 22:03

Just flashed up on BBC 10 o’clock news.

FFS.

Peregrina · 06/09/2020 22:08

Just to aid my curiousity, perhaps someone can advise me of the reasons why the UK are unable to sustainably manage their own coastal waters in an environmentally positive way?

Because they chose not to, is the answer, I think. They chose to sell their boats primarily to the Dutch. Many things could be done if the will was there; the will has not been there.

QueenOfThorns · 06/09/2020 22:19

Here’s the Peter Foster thread threadreaderapp.com/thread/1302701541674160134.html.

What a mess.

Peregrina · 06/09/2020 22:24

But if the UK chooses to break an International Treaty who is going to take action against them?

Obviously the right wing Tories hope that Trump will win, and then they can sell out completely to the USA, and be the vassal state that they liked to pretend they were in the EU.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/09/2020 22:28

afaik, no country can unilaterally legislate to break the terms of an international treaty

Otherwise, no treaty would ever be worth negotiating

This looks the daftest Brexiter idea yet and - if it actually happens - would be the likely start of a trade war,
while the EU goes to the World Court at the Hague to sue the UK

The current negotiations breaking down would be a storm in a teacup compared to breaking a treaty

What country would bother negotiating with a UK govt that breaks a treaty because it didn't bother to read it before signing

TokyoSushi · 06/09/2020 22:32

What a mess. Again.

SabrinaThwaite · 06/09/2020 22:35

@BBCkatyaadler

Senior EU diplomat from country traditionally close to UK:”If UK domestic legislation undermines international treaty recently signed by UK+EU, this isnt only a trust orcredibility issue, it could cause trade negotiations to unravel. It wld be a self-defeating strategy by the UK”

No deal plus no credibility.

Darker · 06/09/2020 22:36

The whole thing is a nightmare.

I have banned myself from Twitter for the sake of my mental health.

SabrinaThwaite · 06/09/2020 22:37

I’m just waiting for David Allen Green to start tweeting panda videos again.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/09/2020 22:39

(Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs & Defence)

Simon Coveney@simoncoveney

This would be a very unwise way to proceed

SwedishEdith · 06/09/2020 22:41

Tom Tugendhat has been toeing the party line a lot recently but maybe he's finding his spine again?

@TomTugendhat
This is a pretty clear statement.

SabrinaThwaite · 06/09/2020 22:42

And a legislation required because an Act if Parliament put the WA into domestic law.

HoL could block - but Johnson has just stuffed it with Brexit cronies, would they be enough stop any block?

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 06/09/2020 22:44

Just when you think things can't get worse, they do.

wherearemychickens · 06/09/2020 22:44

I think I might have to hide under a duvet for the next six weeks

BigChocFrenzy · 06/09/2020 22:46

This was the trade geek's response to yesterday's batty Brexit idea (Express) to ban EU businesses from raising money in London unless the EU caves in.

However, it works for this batty Brexit idea too and probably all the others that will come in the next few months 🤦🏻‍♀️

Dmitry Grozoubinski@DmitryOpines

One of the primary reasons London is a global financial hub
is the international business community's belief no UK government would ever countenance a move this fucking stupid

wherearemychickens · 06/09/2020 22:46

Online ordering to top up the brexit stash from underneath it.

wherearemychickens · 06/09/2020 22:47

The tone of the Boris Johnson letter this evening too. Ugh.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/09/2020 22:48

The impact on the EU vs impact on UK can be seen by the fact that UK Westministenders are stockpiling for Brexit,
whereas I'll just order a box of Marmite crisps
(and I can do without them)

SabrinaThwaite · 06/09/2020 22:48

Of course, this might just be Johnson et al trying to bluff.

Which would also make you wonder just how badly they have fucked everything to stoop to this.

Peregrina · 06/09/2020 22:48

I can see from the Brexiters point of view it's going to be nasty EU taking us to an International Court, wah, wah, wah.

On another thread about their failure with Covid there are still Corbyn would have been worse. Quite honestly, I doubt it, and I was no fan of Corbyn's.

SwedishEdith · 06/09/2020 22:49

HoL could block - but Johnson has just stuffed it with Brexit cronies, would they be enough stop any block?

Yep, now we know why Claire Fox was shoved into the HoL.
