Today is the last scheduled day for talks with the EU.

We have til 30th June to ask for a transition extension. We won't.

That leaves us starring down the barrel of a no deal exit, when we still could be in a covid-19 crisis and the US may be in turmoil given recent events and the coming election...

It's not a pretty picture.

LQ - I am not sure if they have banned them? I think they are trying to make it harder.....But there are restrictions on foreign nationals owning big chunks of land - they have to go through the OIC - but I am really not sure how effective it is. Most of the high country stations are owned by foreign nationals - and that creates issues similar that you see here - closing footpaths/right of ways that they have committed to honour. I am not sure if these individuals are ever interested in anything that their own self interest.
It's all so bloody depressing

ListeningQuietly · 06/06/2020 16:39

I am not sure if these individuals are ever interested in anything that their own self interest.
I am UTTERLY sure that most of them think little and care less about the 99.9%

Tanith · 06/06/2020 16:41

They were lied to. This is not the Brexit they were promised, by any stretch of the imagination. The lies are still going on.
The Brexit campaign is probably the first major vote that was completely built on lies from start to finish. It set out to lie. It is still lying.

I don't see why we can't acknowledge that instead of treating all Leavers as pariahs when many really did just trust what they were told.
It's a brave person who stands up and admits they got it wrong and we need their bravery. Or do we want a bitterly divided country for evermore?

Singasonga · 06/06/2020 16:41

That tweet from Mitt Romney isn't surprising. Anne Applebaum has a great article in The Atlantic this month, which compares what's happened in the GOP to what happened to German Communists in East Germany as the Stasi rose. Romney has actually been showing patriotic opposition to Trump for some time:

History Will Judge the Complicit
Why have Republican leaders abandoned their principles in support of an immoral and dangerous president?

The lies are continuing- Bridgen on one of the TV news shows last night spouting absolute bullshit - just completely delusional...... as for this suggested a new royal yacht- it's just for there own jollies - nothing goes do with the royal family.
People are homeless and the fuckers come up with that!?

borntobequiet · 06/06/2020 16:48

I honestly don’t understand how Bridgen functions in normal life let alone as an MP. Entitled, ignorant, delusional.

DGRossetti · 06/06/2020 17:18

Speaking of tweets .... Prof Alice Roberts tweeted today to celebrate her Grandfathers part in D-Day and fighting fascism.

Not sure if it's a regular thing, or in response to something hmm]? (Her one time colleague in archaeology Francis Pryor tweeted that Priti Patels immigration bill was Sickening fascist drivel )

Apileofballyhoo · 06/06/2020 17:59

This explains one lot of Trump supporters. I don't think you need to be on Twitter to read it.

pointythings · 06/06/2020 18:27

The Royal Yacht idea isn't new though. It's been pushed at least twice before.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 06/06/2020 18:34

It's all kicking off in Whitehall.

Normally, Cressida would tell the woodentops to arrest anyone wearing a mask, but I don't think that's going to fly this time.

Jason118 · 06/06/2020 18:42

I always think of charging horses as a calming influence Smile

ICouldHaveBeenAContender · 06/06/2020 18:48

Late to the party, but that article on the new royal yacht read almost like a parody to me. I realise it wasn't, unfortunately.

JeSuisPoulet · 06/06/2020 19:09

Wow BCF that is such interesting research, particularly after the gender based medicine discussions a few threads back.

Worryingly my first thought was "Oh no, the koolaid anti-fem's will think women have created this to reduce testosterone in men!" Shock
I am confident I would never have thought that or typed that prior to 2016.

JeSuisPoulet · 06/06/2020 20:16

Of course Serco won it! www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/06/serco-wins-covid-19-test-and-trace-contract-despite-1m-fine

In Brexit news, do we have any links to show the country of origin removal plans, or is this speculation from Liam Fox's time as Trum-pet negotiator? I wish I still had all of the links from back then to revise.

ListeningQuietly · 06/06/2020 21:04

Picking up on what @JeSuisPoulet just said
and a long standing point from @RedToothBrush
would @MNHQ be willing to download all of these threads from the very start
to a format that can be searched and tagged ....
If nothing else it would give @justineMNHQ the evidence she needs to get into the news on the like we did not warn you category

Would chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/ be willing to host the C&P and tagging ?
is there a way lots of us could do the tagging ?

as these threads are quite astounding

a bit like the 5:2 ones that got used for multiple books

pussycatinboots · 06/06/2020 21:21

JeSuis try searching "werrity" and see if what you want is on there?

^Downing Street has rushed to shut down yet another cabinet row about overseas students, after Liam Fox indicated he thinks they should be removed from official immigration statistics.

Is Dr. Fox going native ? (And yes, I use that phrase in the deliberate knowledge of it's murky origins within the British Empire Officer Class).^

^does this quote help locate it?

pussycatinboots · 06/06/2020 21:33

Or this one from 16-Mar-17?

Downing Street has rushed to shut down yet another cabinet row about overseas students, after Liam Fox indicated he thinks they should be removed from official immigration statistics.

Theresa May’s spokesman said her decision to keep recording foreign students within the figures remains in place, following the International Trade Secretary’s comments this morning.

Dr Fox said to MPs at a hearing in Parliament that he had told Home Secretary Amber Rudd the country should not “underestimate the value” students brought to the UK.

US billionaires got $434 billion richer since coronavirus pandemic began

I suspect that the UK super-rich are much better at hiding their increased fortunes

JeSuisPoulet · 06/06/2020 22:49

Thank you @pussycatinboots!
Those are what I was thinking of for HK (although I suspected it applied to India at the time!).

I am also thinking I remember some leaked negotiation papers that suggested removal of country of origin on food being a demand from US... I will search werrity too, thanks for the reminder Wink

JeSuisPoulet · 06/06/2020 22:56

" "werrity" US trade deals" bought up a lot of links but all of them came with a redirect notice and then "Oops! We can't find the link" Sad

SabrinaThwaite · 06/06/2020 23:06

Have you tried searching for Liam Fox / Atlantic Bridge?

Cabinet unrest over U-turn on animal welfare in US trade talks

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/jun/06/uk-accused-u-turn-animal-welfare-us-trade-talks

Downing Street has been accused of reopening the door to imports of chlorinated chicken and hormone-treated beef, after a leaked memo instructed ministers to have “no specific policy” on animal welfare in US trade talks.

The letter from No 10 states that the ministerial mandate for the US negotiations was “being updated to reflect” the fact that the UK was to have no policy position on animal welfare.
