“In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”

Not George Orwell but often attributed to him. But a powerful statement with resonance nonetheless

Simple, transparent, quick, no need for dragging MPs in from hospitals.

Whilst I agree it was shocking barbaric to see an MP had to be wheeled into vote on a stretcher, I will continue to disagree about "easy" and "simple" voting systems. Bearing in mind the shenanigans that happened last year when MPs pairings got "mixed up".

Remember: there is no recourse for anything that happens in parliament. There's nowhere higher to go. And once a vote is recorded, that is that no matter how that vote is arrived at. Basic constitutional law.

Or, to flip the telescope, you trying going to court and arguing that a law was passed in error, or by mistake, or by fraud (which has happened) and see what answer you get.

That said, I bet it's easier to claim expenses as an MP than vote.

TheABC · 02/06/2020 14:12

TBH, unless the Tory MPs decide to grow a pair of balls and actually read legislation before voting on it, all the "pushback" in the world is not going to help.

I am resigned to No-deal. Like the USA with Trump, we need to hit rock bottom, before it gets any better. That will probably include a much longer, deeper recession and the break-up of the Union.

The ERG are a bunch of plutocrats and simply don't care about the damage caused.

This is big. A huge concerted effort from the EU nations to help each other recover from the economic damage caused by coronavirus. Important to note that most of this funding will be distributed through grants NOT loans. Also important to note that the UK will be going it alone!

It is a spectacle watching the Moggster tie himself in knots like the slippery eel that he is, but not a very edifying one.

And he's just argued that all MPs represent all constituencies collectively so up your Walter Bagheot.

Not at all. Next election by PR, hurrah !!!!!!

Peregrina · 02/06/2020 14:42

So next time they say they can't answer your letter because you are not a constituent, tell them that the Mogg says that doesn't matter.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 02/06/2020 14:43

Whether it's Mogg talking about the constitution or BJ's Churchill biography, they act as if they are great experts but they talk out of their posh arses in a posh arse voice.

Worth repeating a point made: Mogg talking about the Palace of Westminster as a workplace, but if it was then his proposals would be unlawful under the Equality Act and half a dozen other laws passed by the very same parliament.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 02/06/2020 14:44

Breaking News:

Mogg confirms he is a six feet man and not a two meters man.

Mockers what's 17cm between friends?

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 02/06/2020 14:46

So long as there's enough room for him to slouch.

Stop it. Now !

DGRossetti · 02/06/2020 14:55

DGR Have you seen this?

Not much to say. It won't work, despite the cost and we'll end up having to find another way.

I wonder what - if any - work the UK is doing with the EU on trying to get a standardised approach to immunity certificates should they be needed.

Because it goes without saying the UK will swerve any EU plans and then wonder why UK travellers flashing their "Backed by Boris" cards aren't allowed in as they don't conform.

pussycatinboots · 02/06/2020 15:02

I just wondered how facial recognition software would work whilst wearing a facemask. Especially some of the larger "homemade" ones I've seen.

DGRossetti · 02/06/2020 15:14

Most manuals I've seen have a prerequisite for white skinned targets only, otherwise accuracy goes right out the window.

It's hardly headline news though is it ? System trained by racists is racist is a finding which surprised no one.

A shade over 6 inches?

DGRossetti · 02/06/2020 15:38

A shade over 6 inches?

I tried diving on that grenade before it went off, but it seems I was too late Sad.

There goes the thread ....

pointythings · 02/06/2020 15:41

The thread will recover, DGR. We've had derails before, many of them involving recipes.

When democracy is unravelling around us, it seems apt that the thread should mirror reality.

RedToothBrush · 02/06/2020 15:45

Love the Covid Safe precautions in the work place and enforcement of the 2 metre rule.
