Brexit

Westministenders: Reployed back to No Deal Planning

Now Covid-19 is over (yeah I know right) lots of civil servants who were switched from brexit no deal planning to covid-19 planning have been switched back to their original remit.

For some reason this doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

We've also seen yet another doubling down on the EU not being flexible and how they need to make a deal. And lots of rhetoric about being serious about no transiton planning.

Remember we have something of a deadline looming at the end of next month.

So before we are even out of this crisis, the government have lost interest. Today's press conference was an eye opener - Van Tam openly said that the time taken to get test results was too long and wasn't good enough yet and meant track and trace wasnt still operational despite it being such a crucial factor in being able to go into the next phase as planned on 1st June.

Another deadline we won't make - the Manchester Nightgale still has patients and the local authorities in the NW are going mental. So the government is playing more silly buggers over blame and villianising the evil workshy teachers. Noting the government guidance for teachers on how to teacher children at home says fuck all and the guidance on reopening schools makes a Theresa May dog ate my homework style document look positively well thought out, in terms of practicality. (Not even going to touch on the question of whether its safe - the whether its workable one is more important).

I guess that means things are getting back to normal at least.

A recession looms, but workers rights are now fair game and fully in the government cross hairs - as we see from a lack of PPE for the 'heroes' and the attacks on the teachers. As well as the carers who were sold down river. That'll be the ununionised carers...

Taking back control.

Condolences, yoikes Flowers

boatyardblues · 24/05/2020 11:45

I rang a friend earlier to see how she was as last time we spoke about 10 days ago her father was receiving end of life care. She hadn’t been able to visit him because he’s in a nursing home in another part of the country & she’s been following the lockdown guidance, as have the home. Her father died last week, but she also broke down and said her husband is now in hospital unexpectedly critically ill, not expected to last more than a few days. Normally her siblings would have come to stay to support her at a time like this, but they live out of area too. I offered to go round and sit with her, but she says she is afraid of giving local friends COVID as she has been visiting her husband in hospital and is at increased risk of being infected now. She is beyond devastated and I am very worried about her.

Those are the kind of appalling decisions which families up and down the country are having to make just now. Travelling 250 miles for “childcare“ doesn’t cut it. I was really cross about Cummings and the Tory dissembling earlier, but now I’m furious.

RedToothBrush · 24/05/2020 11:58

Sebastian Payne @SebastianEPayne
Ministers privately saying they don’t think Dominic Cummings can’t hang on - despite the political capital used by Boris Johnson to keep him.

"I was saying yes until this morning. But on balance I think not,” says one.

But allies of Cummings still think he can battle it out.

yoikes I am so sorry. Flowers

The Cummings apologists should be made to read every devastating loss in lockdown story. Not that it would achieve anything, they lack conscience.

dontcallmelen · 24/05/2020 12:02

boat how awful for your poor friend, so very sad I’m so sorry 💐

RedToothBrush · 24/05/2020 12:04

Rob Powell @robpowellnews
Cummings into No10

No answers to my questions about whether he should resign and if he went to Durham a second time

Around half an hour ago

Still in there

Cummings is known to work weekends... Johnson not so much...

Paul Brand @paulbranditv
Not unusual for him to work weekends... but 👀

Heartbreaking stories on here Flowers for all of you.

Agree Cumming's Crypt needs to be properly sealed so he doesn't apparate at the next election.

Peregrina · 24/05/2020 12:15

So two ERG big guns telling it like it is.

But cross because he's fouling up Brexit, not because he's making a shambles of running the country!

JeSuisPoulet · 24/05/2020 12:18

Yes, I love the "he told us to do it" defence. Makes them look...special.

I am fascinated at Labour's strategy throughout the Cummings crisis: to hold back.

They've NOT called for DC to be sacked (although do want investigation).@Keir_Starmer hasn't said a word.

Heeding Napoleon's advice to avoid interrupting your enemy when he's making a mistake?

boatyardblues · 24/05/2020 12:19

Yoikes I am sorry to hear about your aunt. 💐

Friends & the local community will pull round my friend and support her once they know. She said she was only now realising that he won’t pull through and that she needs to start telling people. One neighbour is already taking her to & from the hospital, as she has no family locally and they do not have kids (they are older, so would have had grown up kids). We’ll make sure she’s OK but it’s awful what people are having to endure at the moment.

I wonder if the Boris thought he could ride the dragon of the press ?

Now EIGHT Tory MPs demand the head of Dominic Cummings: Top Brexiteer Steve Baker leads anger on backbenches and says Britain 'can't afford this nonsense' over claims the maverick aide broke lockdown three times

-No10 aide Dominic Cummings travelled from London to parents' home in Durham when he was self-isolating

-Witness testimonies have cast doubt on the Downing Street aide's insistence he 'stayed put' at parents farm

-One claimed to have seen Mr Cummings 30 miles away from farm on April 12 amid tight travel restrictions

-A second then said they sighted Mr Cummings back in Durham on April 19, five days after returning to No10

-Revelations have poured petrol on the row engulfing Boris Johnson's right-hand man, who has so far clung on

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 24/05/2020 12:24

He's been summoned and is 10DS now.

mrslaughan · 24/05/2020 12:41

Just being fired is too good for him unfortunately......

Yoikes - I am so incredibly sorry for your loss, and Boaty for your friend. 💐💐💐💐💐

It's just bloody awful.

And I am beyond furious for friends who have followed lockdown at huge financial cost. Breaking lockdown would not have been a nice break for them in the country. It would have meant financial security for their families..... but they followed the rules. It makes a mockery of all of us.

yoikes · 24/05/2020 12:43

Thank you all x
Mum is devastated:(
boat so sorry. What an awful situation x

DrBlackbird · 24/05/2020 12:45

I've now written to my MP asking him to clarify his position on DC staying or not, as well as asking him as to whether he actually read the WA before the Commons vote.

Sadly this is what will happen... Even if they do sack him, I bet you £100 he'll be back in time for the next election

Only I'd increase that bet by tenfold and also that he'll be back long before the next election. Same job, but different title. This party has form for its revolving door of 'now I'm going, wait now I'm back'.

DrBlackbird · 24/05/2020 12:49

Flowers Flowers to Yoikes and Boatyard. A reminder of the awful personal devastation that's happening whilst our elected leaders carry on with their pantomime government. Shameful.

Peregrina · 24/05/2020 13:02

This party has form for its revolving door of 'now I'm going, wait now I'm back'.

Yes, Priti Patel - sacked for lying now brought back, and still every bit as bad.

Violetparis · 24/05/2020 13:05

I think Labour are not asking Cummings to quit to pile the pressure on Boris. A Labour MP was on Sky News earlier today calling for Boris to explain all in the press briefing today. If Boris doesn't it shows a complete lack of leadership which Labour can highlight.

lonelyplanetmum · 24/05/2020 13:14

Condolences to all those suffering bereavements and especially to those dying and grieving alone.

The friend's Mum I mentioned previously also died last night - not of the virus but of cancer. She spent the last three weeks alone in hospital, then a nursing home, desperate to see her daughters but with visitors being banned. My friend and her sister were eventually allowed in at the very last minute to say goodbye.

It is shameful that normal families like that have to follow the rules (even when dying) and government advisors do not.

pointythings · 24/05/2020 13:25

Meanwhile back on Brexit, the hostile environment is being rolled out against EU nationals seeking naturalisation - colour me surprised. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/eu-nationals-uk-citizenship-home-office-latest-a9527036.html

DrBlackbird · 24/05/2020 13:28

Labour's restraint wrt DC is heartening in terms of demonstrating more strategic behaviour. Wait for next PMQ's. Though of course, thanks to JRM, BJ will have his braying mob behind him to help drown out his faux indignant non response.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 24/05/2020 13:30

Thanks to you all and your friends going through all this. I'm so sorry for all your losses

Peregrina · 24/05/2020 13:35

Well, OK a campaign van has turned up outside Cumming's London home, but it's a Bank Holiday, perhaps he has decamped to Durham for the long weekend?
