Westministenders: Reployed back to No Deal Planning

Now Covid-19 is over (yeah I know right) lots of civil servants who were switched from brexit no deal planning to covid-19 planning have been switched back to their original remit.

For some reason this doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

We've also seen yet another doubling down on the EU not being flexible and how they need to make a deal. And lots of rhetoric about being serious about no transiton planning.

Remember we have something of a deadline looming at the end of next month.

So before we are even out of this crisis, the government have lost interest. Today's press conference was an eye opener - Van Tam openly said that the time taken to get test results was too long and wasn't good enough yet and meant track and trace wasnt still operational despite it being such a crucial factor in being able to go into the next phase as planned on 1st June.

Another deadline we won't make - the Manchester Nightgale still has patients and the local authorities in the NW are going mental. So the government is playing more silly buggers over blame and villianising the evil workshy teachers. Noting the government guidance for teachers on how to teacher children at home says fuck all and the guidance on reopening schools makes a Theresa May dog ate my homework style document look positively well thought out, in terms of practicality. (Not even going to touch on the question of whether its safe - the whether its workable one is more important).

I guess that means things are getting back to normal at least.

A recession looms, but workers rights are now fair game and fully in the government cross hairs - as we see from a lack of PPE for the 'heroes' and the attacks on the teachers. As well as the carers who were sold down river. That'll be the ununionised carers...

Taking back control.

Labour have come out with an attack and, but they appear to be sticking firmly with the line that Johnson needs to explain Cummings' behaviour. They have not explicitly demanded he be sacked. It seems clever to me on first glance, though I haven't thought it through yet Grin

TheMShip · 24/05/2020 13:38

it's a Bank Holiday, perhaps he has decamped to Durham for the long weekend?

No he's in Downing Street right now.

Ridicule is usually a more effective way of bringing a scumbag down than argument.

What if the Opposition benches just all get out their Dominic masks as above at the next PMQs when the Tories start braying?

and have the media (without any sense of irony) accuse them of not taking things seriously ?

Think these things through ...

The main thing is to go for the MPs
make them realise that once people get into the habit of holding them to account
it will not stop

Tory minister suggests public were misled about Boris Johnson's illness
By
4-5 minutes

TORY minister Grant Shapps seemed to raise the possibility that Downing Street had misled the public over the severity of Boris Johnson’s run-in with coronavirus.

He was left floundering this morning after he insisted Dominic Cummings did not visit Durham for a second time.

The beleaguered Transport Minister said the Prime Minister's right hand man was a “stickler for the rules” and had been in London since the 14th April.

In a joint report, The Observer and Sunday Mirror said Cummings had been seen in Barnard Castle, more than 25 miles from Durham, on 12 April, that he’d then been photographed back in London on 14 April and then spotted again in Houghall Woods near Durham on 19 April.

Shapps said it was untrue that there had been a return visit, but was less clear on the visit to Barnard Castle.

Though he said this would have been outwith the two week isolation period. It would, however, be in breach of lockdown rules.

Johnson has reportedly rushed to the defence of Cummings, telling friends: “It's not like he was visiting a lover.”

According to reports, the Prime Minister has “thrown a protective ring” around his most senior advisor.

He is said to have told friends: “Dominic acted within the guidance and was simply caring for his family. I now consider the matter closed.”

Johnson also told allies he would not throw Cummings “to the dogs”.

Asked when the Prime Minister knew Cummings had left London for the North East of England, Shapps told Ridge: “Well as your viewers probably remember the Prime Minister during exactly the same period was pretty ill, and in fact, eventually in hospital and in ICU so I don't think this will have been high on the Prime Minister's agenda.”

Ridge pointed out that when Cummings travelled to Durham on the 28th to the 29th of March, Downing Street said the Prime Minister, although showing symptoms of coronavirus and self isolating, was still leading the government, and that he was working from Number 10.

“So were we misled about how serious the Prime Minister's illness was at that time,” she asked

“Sorry I'm not quite sure what you mean by that connection,” Shapps replied."

"We know the prime minister was unwell, we know he carried on working, that's absolutely true. And then he went into hospital, very well documented, I think everyone knew what was going on there. And then, of course, ended up in intensive care after that.“

Ridge pointed out that at the time Cummings is believed to had made this journey to Durham, the Prime Minister was still working as usual.

“Oh yeah. So yeah, I mean he was,” Shapps replied.

“So why didn't he know about it and or did he know about it?” the host asked.

“I don't actually know whether the Prime Minister tracks every single move of Dominic Cummings I think he knew that Dominic Cummings was ill, and was self isolating, which was exactly what he was doing with his wife and, and his child.”

No 10 has said the story in the Sunday Mirror and the Observer is "inaccurate".

Downing Street said: "Yesterday the Mirror and Guardian wrote inaccurate stories about Mr Cummings.

"Today they are writing more inaccurate stories including claims that Mr Cummings returned to Durham after returning to work in Downing Street on 14 April.

"We will not waste our time answering a stream of false allegations about Mr Cummings from campaigning newspapers."

Can you imagine the war cabinet going on right now in No 10 on how to 'manage and deflect' this story?? I cannot see Johnson firing Cummings.

Instead, watch this space for a media campaign including a surge of FB stories defending poor DC just trying to ensure his child was looked after... Maybe a new story will be fed to the press? Shame that Dilyn is a dog and can't have pups Grin

DGRossetti · 24/05/2020 14:33

Seen elsewhere:

If Johnson sacks Cummings, Cummings will turn against him - he is not a loyalist. This would politically slaughter Johnson, because Cummings is privy to all the machinations that Johnson agreed to, in both the Brexit campaign and the leadership contest; indeed, he thought many of them up.

That is why Johnson won't sack him and that seems quite straightforward to me. Cummings will not quit because he considers himself to be some sort of messiah, but he may come to a secret deal which involves him in voluntarily leaving No 10 whilst still having access to Johnson. That would be far more dangerous for our democracy. Cummings is unelected, not a civil servant and probably not a conservative. He obviously has a political agenda but it is unknown to almost all and therefore completely closed to scrutiny. It is a disgrace that this man exercises such enormous control over the lives of us all when our elected representatives are essentially twiddling their thumbs.

Hmm

for reasons best known to themselves, the press have shown little interest in other stories these past few hours. Which may be what's rattling the Tories so much. It could be a case of keep Cummings and lose the Press .... who is more valuable ?

mrslaughan · 24/05/2020 14:37

Maybe we will finally find out how many children Boris finally has...... that would be a story that would get this off the front pages?

Good question ...

I don't like that Led by Donkeys van. Not the right time.

The Labour Party advert is superb though (Retweeted by Tim Montgomerie and Iain Martin Shock)

Agree The Labour Party ad is good.

Since BJ is running out of distractions what's the betting we get the first public outing on the steps of No. 10 of Baby Wilf?

I love that Labour ad. I do hope they are all convinced that they have neither bent nor broken any of the 'rules', though.
