Westministenders: Reployed back to No Deal Planning

Now Covid-19 is over (yeah I know right) lots of civil servants who were switched from brexit no deal planning to covid-19 planning have been switched back to their original remit.

For some reason this doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

We've also seen yet another doubling down on the EU not being flexible and how they need to make a deal. And lots of rhetoric about being serious about no transiton planning.

Remember we have something of a deadline looming at the end of next month.

So before we are even out of this crisis, the government have lost interest. Today's press conference was an eye opener - Van Tam openly said that the time taken to get test results was too long and wasn't good enough yet and meant track and trace wasnt still operational despite it being such a crucial factor in being able to go into the next phase as planned on 1st June.

Another deadline we won't make - the Manchester Nightgale still has patients and the local authorities in the NW are going mental. So the government is playing more silly buggers over blame and villianising the evil workshy teachers. Noting the government guidance for teachers on how to teacher children at home says fuck all and the guidance on reopening schools makes a Theresa May dog ate my homework style document look positively well thought out, in terms of practicality. (Not even going to touch on the question of whether its safe - the whether its workable one is more important).

I guess that means things are getting back to normal at least.

A recession looms, but workers rights are now fair game and fully in the government cross hairs - as we see from a lack of PPE for the 'heroes' and the attacks on the teachers. As well as the carers who were sold down river. That'll be the ununionised carers...

Taking back control.

I should imagine that Mr Johnson is gambling on the fact that he has 4 years to allow us to forget about this. It might be a little sticky for a month or two, but there are plenty of squirrels to throw at us, we will have forgotten all about this is a couple of months time. It's good fun in the interim though.

BoreOfWhabylon · 24/05/2020 17:56

Alastair Campbell on R5 Live has just called Johnson a "Poundshop Victor Orban"

ClashCityRocker · 24/05/2020 17:57

Where's 118 come from then? I've seen it on the official page, but I'm sure everyone was reporting hospital deaths higher than that earlier on...

Piggywaspushed · 24/05/2020 17:59

It's the ' actually tested positive' number. Expect a big number in a couple of days, although BH lag gives them a nice cushion.

Piggywaspushed · 24/05/2020 18:00

Wish I could hack Cummings family WhatsApp.

And Durham Police's.

longwayoff · 24/05/2020 18:03

I didn't think it possible to feel more disgust for Boris than I already had but he's done it. What a contemptible performance. Interesting to hear him saying he understands a father following his instincts, he seems to have come quite late to this. How is that Arcuri investigation going? Why did she drop into UK and tell us she'd kept his secrets? She left rather abruptly. Why was that I wonder?

RedToothBrush · 24/05/2020 18:10

OMG the uk civil service tweet that has now been taken down!

I'm slightly nervous about that CS tweet. I can't help thinking (because we're all being gaslit) that it was by Cummings and is to sow seeds that CS not impartial and is elite. I know elite arguments really shouldn't apply any more as what could be more elite than saying the rules are for the little people? But that's my 1st (well, 2nd) reaction to that CS tweet. We're being played again.

OldLace · 24/05/2020 18:18

Well, that was a (n unfunny) joke, wasn't it?
Johnson defends his friend to the hilt.
Journalists cant connect, are cut off, given no right to reply.
Peston made a mess of his Qu but did you see his face at the end as he was cut off?
Excellent Qu's about: WHAT did you know, WHEN did you know, did DC go to Barnard Castle or not? Johnson answers none of them.
It's very stupid of him to spend such political capital says a journalist as 'the public won't 'understand' the way the PM is gambling they will'.
Except Johnson and Co don't give a monkeys what the public think!!

And the Schools remarks!! Washing their hands of the whole thing.
And the 'further undoing of the lockdown announcement next week'.
Bet you it will be Sunday night, and shops wont know if they can open until then, to allow no planning for the next day, like the 'back to work' fiasco.
I didn't think I could despair more re Johnson and Co.
Seems I was wrong.
(goes back to read last 3 pages of thread)

OldLace · 24/05/2020 18:21

OMG Red was that now deleted CS Tweet genuine???

longwayoff · 24/05/2020 18:22

My sympathy civil service, I don't know how you can work with this bunch of charlatans and scammers but thanks for sticking with it. Someone has to keep the train on the rails.

JeSuisPoulet · 24/05/2020 18:24

If anyone doubted Bozo has no idea what the word "integrity" means...

CS tweet was real - I've got my own screenshot. Lasted 10 minutes.

Spotted on another thread - today's Word of the Day from OED

PawFives · 24/05/2020 18:32

What the hell is going on? Keep wondering if it’s that they want to end lockdown but the country aren’t yet sufficiently on board. Or is Johnson desperate to keep Cummings onside because of the June Brexit extension deadline? Or is it a squirrel? If so, what for? It’s enough to drive people insane. Every time you think things can’t get worse they do. I just despair.

HateIsNotGood · 24/05/2020 18:36

Not condoning Dominic UnforthCummings in anyway but unfortunately the vitriol that has always surrounded him (deserved or not) somewhat blunts the knives that are stabbing him; it smacks a bit of a desperate 'we've finally got the bugger' manouvre.

What exactly is his Job Title? Is he self-employed and what does the remit of his Contract state? Maybe an FOI request could ascertain this.

I'm not sure from what Post he should resign from and even if he does, any 'resignation' doesn't preclude him from still 'advising' in many other capacities.

This will be yesterday's news before you know it - it's a 'smokescreen' to lead many of you down a rabbit hole. I suggest you ignore it and keep your eyes on the other Balls in Play, including the Brexit Ball amongst others.

Peregrina · 24/05/2020 18:40

I agree that it's something of a smokescreen, but I am not sure that this will be yesterday's news. A lot of people have made considerable sacrifices over the last two months, and to hear that the rules don't apply to Cummings is galling.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/05/2020 18:40

"what Post he should resign from"

He is an official adviser to the PM, on a salary of 95-99k

DrBlackbird · 24/05/2020 18:41

Yes, but Prettybird he could always hand over the thinking to Gove who would be happy to take on that job.

I'm thinking 'Russia' in terms of what Dom's got on BJ...

Anyhow, my general sense is that Johnson is really tired of the whole Covid thing, tired of daily briefings and of giving journalists and the public the chance to question him however badly they do it. He also perhaps wants to stop the taxpayer handout to keep everyone alive. He wants it to all end now. It's making being PM tiresome and not what he signed up for.

So, it's back to work, back to schools, and shops open as fast as you can say 'responsible fatherhood' and lets welcome back herd immunity with open arms. What does it matter to him or the cabinet as they've all had it now anyhow.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 24/05/2020 18:42

DC is a Spad, Special Advisor to the PM, a category of Civil Servant with its own Code of Conduct.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/05/2020 18:43

They have indeed "got the bugger" red-handed, breaking the rules that the plebs have been ordered to obey

BJ desperately defending him - because of whatever Cummings holds over him - means that BJ has been significantly damaged too

JeSuisPoulet · 24/05/2020 18:43

Do you know what might actually work?
If every school tests every child they have in. We'd get community testing done at least!

BigChocFrenzy · 24/05/2020 18:44

Labour will want Cummings to stay though, because it keeps BJ damaged

Piggywaspushed · 24/05/2020 18:45

I was ill round the same time as Cummings. the rule was that if you were ill you isolated yourself form the rest of your family : I did this for tow whole weeks!!. This is what his wife should have done. Not got in a car with him.

Here is what happened

Mrs 'I'm not well dear'
Mr 'shit! Do I have to look after Ceddy now? I can't do that! I don't feel awfully well now. Quick! In the car and let's fuck off to Durham'
