Westministenders: Reployed back to No Deal Planning

Now Covid-19 is over (yeah I know right) lots of civil servants who were switched from brexit no deal planning to covid-19 planning have been switched back to their original remit.

For some reason this doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

We've also seen yet another doubling down on the EU not being flexible and how they need to make a deal. And lots of rhetoric about being serious about no transiton planning.

Remember we have something of a deadline looming at the end of next month.

So before we are even out of this crisis, the government have lost interest. Today's press conference was an eye opener - Van Tam openly said that the time taken to get test results was too long and wasn't good enough yet and meant track and trace wasnt still operational despite it being such a crucial factor in being able to go into the next phase as planned on 1st June.

Another deadline we won't make - the Manchester Nightgale still has patients and the local authorities in the NW are going mental. So the government is playing more silly buggers over blame and villianising the evil workshy teachers. Noting the government guidance for teachers on how to teacher children at home says fuck all and the guidance on reopening schools makes a Theresa May dog ate my homework style document look positively well thought out, in terms of practicality. (Not even going to touch on the question of whether its safe - the whether its workable one is more important).

I guess that means things are getting back to normal at least.

A recession looms, but workers rights are now fair game and fully in the government cross hairs - as we see from a lack of PPE for the 'heroes' and the attacks on the teachers. As well as the carers who were sold down river. That'll be the ununionised carers...

Taking back control.

It's all so depressing. Even in the midst of this pandemic, they re still insisting that te hUK neither wants nor needs "low skilled" workers like carers, etc. There's no reasoning with that kind of stupid.

Pmk

Double decker cats Smile

It's going to be interesting to see what Nicola Sturgeon announces on Thursday - and whether the R number goes up in England as a result of the mismanaged easing of the lockdown in England.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course - mytuppence is that the Negs are still stuck on The Fish Thing.

My understanding is that the UK wants to apportion quota back to the starting point when the CFP started. The EU are saying a collective Nyet.

I can see why both have their stance - however, whilst it's very true that the UK Fishers/Boat Owners of 1/2/3 generations ago sold their quota - I'm not sure they would have done so if they had a crystal ball and saw their grandchildren had no future.

Can't blame them for selling - Fishing is one of the most Dangerous Jobs there is - wouldn't most people sell for good money rather than....?

boatyardblues · 18/05/2020 23:39

Evening all. I keep thinking we’ve hit rock bottom, but then a whole new level of shite is unearthed.

Peregrina · 18/05/2020 23:44

When will people wake up to how shit this Government is? I know it's no easy job, but some countries have done better.

pontypridd · 18/05/2020 23:56

This is Cummings' chaos isn't it?

It all feels so purposeful. None of this incompetence can be actually that - surely ...

Peregrina · 19/05/2020 00:01

Well, Johnson could be incompetent - he prefers to let others do the work and doesn't do detail, but you would hope that he had some competent people around him - except that he chose to have a cabinet full of toadies, to make himself look good.

The decent ones were chased out at the last election. People like Rory Stewart, Justine Greening just to mention a couple, should have been able to give years more service as MPs.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/05/2020 01:07

Thanks, red 💐

BigChocFrenzy · 19/05/2020 01:15

The "fish thing" is because the UK wants some Uk professionals in certain fields - including finance, banking, commercial law - to be able to do things in the EU without having to move an office etc there, get permits and all that.

The EU want something in return for another group of workers - their fishermen.

The UK still seems stuck on the idea that they can pick out all the things they want from the SIngle market and not have to give anything substantial in return

However, fishing is a tiny % of the Uk and EU economies.

The main sticking points are more likely to be more substantial:

the Level Playing Field for SM access
the Uk wanting lower data protection standards
financial passporting
access to agencies like EURATOM, EMA

So is Darwin going to win before November ?

Trump says he is taking hydroxychloroquine, a drug FDA has cautioned about using for COVID-19.

He started "a couple weeks ago"

"I think it's good. I've heard a lot good stories.
And if it's not good, I'll tell you right, I'm not going to get hurt by it"
< you might get bigly hurt by the side effects, if you take a large enough dose to actually do anything >

Twelve valid questions from the NEU to the government, about schools. It seems Johnson wants the rest of primary schools open by 22/6. That means impossible to split into groups of 15, due to staff numbers, lack of space.

Also some French schools have had to close again due to Covid.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 19/05/2020 07:43

I thought Trump had got over his hydroxychloroquine obsession. Glad I picked up my prescription the other day now. Hmm

Re when will people realise - they won't. A school friend is a brexiteer. She's clever, kind, normal type of person. But since she met her OH she's become full of conspiracy theories (evil EU, anti Vax etc) such that she even refused routine medical care because of "how dangerous" it was. Ask where all the people injured by the procedure are and you get crickets She is so far down the rabbit hole I doubt she'll come out again. And has a solid professional job so is unlikely to feel the impact of her vote.

rogueantimatter · 19/05/2020 07:47

Will Hartlepool and Liverpool councils be unofficially penalised for refusing to open schools?

Would any of you wise and impressively well-informed old hands take a pop at predicting what will happen after the next GE? If Labour gets in will there be any scope for joining EFTA and other European bodies?

I desperately need some hope. Am so fearful for my children. My son will graduate next year.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 19/05/2020 07:47

Thanks red

pointythings · 19/05/2020 07:57

I'm a bit bemused by the idea that the EU should give in on fishing rights because the people who originally sold them might have regrets... That isn't how the world works.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 19/05/2020 08:09

pointy it staggers me the number of people who think "negotiate" means "have a strop because the mean EU won't give us everything we want". Trying to explain what compromise means is head on a brick wall stuff.

borntobequiet · 19/05/2020 08:17

PMK thanks again Red

I regret selling our flat after we bought our current house. We only put it on the market after we'd bought and could have easily afforded both mortgages. Only thought that we should have kept it and rented it out just before completing (a few months after having moved in to our new house). Hmm

But that's water under the bridge. God knows how many times it's been bought and sold since then. Confused

lonelyplanetmum · 19/05/2020 08:19

pmk with thanks to Red and agreement with this...

This is Cummings' chaos isn't it? It all feels so purposeful. None of this incompetence can be actually that - surely ...

There's no way there was that announcement at 7pm on a Sunday encouraging certain sectors to return the next day was incompetence. Even some one as thick as mince could figure out that workers need childcare arrangements in place and large regional centres like Manchester etc needed time to prepare.

It was either purposeful chaos theory or purposeful lets infect the next batch, and edge towards incremental herd immunity..

DrBlackbird · 19/05/2020 08:32

It all feels so purposeful. None of this incompetence can be actually that - surely ...

The mishandling of covid was / is incompetence. Leaving without a deal a mixture of incompetence and purposeful. We're in a bad way. As always, those creating the chaos are protected from its impact.

Violetparis · 19/05/2020 08:51

Bury Council is also not opening schools, I wonder if more will follow.
