Brexit

Westministenders: Reployed back to No Deal Planning

Now Covid-19 is over (yeah I know right) lots of civil servants who were switched from brexit no deal planning to covid-19 planning have been switched back to their original remit.

For some reason this doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

We've also seen yet another doubling down on the EU not being flexible and how they need to make a deal. And lots of rhetoric about being serious about no transiton planning.

Remember we have something of a deadline looming at the end of next month.

So before we are even out of this crisis, the government have lost interest. Today's press conference was an eye opener - Van Tam openly said that the time taken to get test results was too long and wasn't good enough yet and meant track and trace wasnt still operational despite it being such a crucial factor in being able to go into the next phase as planned on 1st June.

Another deadline we won't make - the Manchester Nightgale still has patients and the local authorities in the NW are going mental. So the government is playing more silly buggers over blame and villianising the evil workshy teachers. Noting the government guidance for teachers on how to teacher children at home says fuck all and the guidance on reopening schools makes a Theresa May dog ate my homework style document look positively well thought out, in terms of practicality. (Not even going to touch on the question of whether its safe - the whether its workable one is more important).

I guess that means things are getting back to normal at least.

A recession looms, but workers rights are now fair game and fully in the government cross hairs - as we see from a lack of PPE for the 'heroes' and the attacks on the teachers. As well as the carers who were sold down river. That'll be the ununionised carers...

Taking back control.

It's pretty, but the "next slide please" refrain is so fucking irritating. A wireless mouse, or even a bloody remote control, is not hard to use nor expensive.

I also noted the "we'll look in to it" response. Feet will need to be held to the fire.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 21/05/2020 20:17

*petty not pretty.

@TheABC having had a done that has trailed behind his whole school career (now catching up thank goodness) I would say it so depends on who you find and how good they are at engaging him, and at making him feel successful (celebrating the small steps). One thing that zoom opens up is a whole raft of different people. Are you in touch with other parents with similar difficulties, who may have used tutors over zoom?

TheABC · 21/05/2020 20:35

@mrslaughan, thank you for that. I know two other families with SEN kids, but in both cases the children are amazingly bright (school work is fine), but they can't cope socially. DS's is the opposite and the school's assessment was just "global development delay", so I am struggling to find "families like us".

I am glad to hear it can help and your child is catching up.

This is something I feel qualified to comment on! Ds1 is severely dyslexic.

@yoikes, thank you.

I will look them up.

Here's a funny thing
Rees-smugg and co seem to want the mob back so that they can give Johnson a backboke in PMQs
assuming that the Starmer they are seeing now is the only Starmer

are they really that dumb?
Starmer is the man who sliced and diced Macdonalds
he revels in the cut and thrust and the adversarial and the dissection
its just that he can adjust his volume button

Johnson and his team are cruising for a bruising if they bring the mob back
as Starmer will exploit the Red/Blue wall in a way that will be popcorn to watch

sadly it will not be in time to stop a catastrophic brexit

mrslaughan · 21/05/2020 21:00

@ABC Do you know any families with Dyspraxia...... I am not sure if GDD is exactly the same - but do know that "description" has been used for children I know before they were diagnosed with dyspraxia (we are a family Dyspraxics and dyslexics) - or alongside a diagnosis of dyspraxia.

Melt downs- we used to have so many. There were two main causes. Sensory overload - which is probably not the case at home. When it came to school work - it was about being set stuff he didn't feel he could do, but felt he should be able to do...... I am not sure if the resonates with you?
Hand in there ....it does get easier . DS is now 15 and works really hard at school - because it's never come easy.

mrslaughan · 21/05/2020 21:02

And listening - we have now seen the Lindsay Hoyle is not afraid to put the Tories in there place.

TheABC · 21/05/2020 21:19

@ListeningQuietly

Starmer cannot prevent a badly-managed No Deal Brexit, but he can damn well make them sweat about it.

I do agree with Johnson about one thing. Under FPTP, England voted for this. So he does have the mandate to give it with full force. Until it all Gets Too Horrible and there is another spectacular U-turn.

DGRossetti · 21/05/2020 21:21

Under FPTP, England voted for this.

And the immigration bill. And Austerity 2.0. And goodness knows what.

yoikes · 21/05/2020 22:55

Fed up today. Really fucking fed up.
2 convos with older people today who should be shielding. Both have Multiple serious health conditions.
They point blank refuse to shield. Still going out, shopping etc
"When my times up it's up!"
One of them has barely left their house in 4 years (no, I'm not exaggerating...)
Now they have been told to stay at home they are out every day!!!
Pics of people at beaches and beauty spots all over the msm and sm today (and the fuckton of litter they left behind!)
Bank holiday weekend coming up...
I didn't clap for carers tonight. It's just all too hypocritical. Makes me want to puke.
Makes me wonder what the point of it all is tbh.
My poor kids :(

yoikes · 21/05/2020 22:56

...I know...I know...it's only 2 people...but it isn't is it?

People like it on every street/road in the UK.

Fucking twats.

GeistohneGrenzen · 21/05/2020 23:19

.

mrslaughan · 22/05/2020 09:22

I know yoikes - and they can't see the hypocrisy of it all. Plus if you even hint that it's an interesting choice - wow! But maybe that shows deep down they know.

Two interesting things yesterday - there is a real rise if memes on Facebook attacking the press - people I know, that I now wish I didn't sharing them......I feel a Facebook purge coming on, but then I think..... I won't know this stuff is happening.

The second thing is Chris Whitty showed a graph where he had plotted the excess deaths , and said something along the lines of .....I have always argued that this is the true cost (it measure) of the pandemic..... or something to that effect. The scientist are pushing back and bloody good on them.

prettybird · 22/05/2020 09:26

As James O'Brien tweeted this morning about the quarantine proposals,

We’re heading toward the Eric Morecambe Defence, aren’t we? “We introduced all the right policies but not necessarily in the right order.”

TatianaBis · 22/05/2020 09:27

It’s their life Yoikes, if they don’t have that much of it left to live it’s really up to them how they choose to live it, even if you don’t understand their choices.

Jason118 · 22/05/2020 09:30

It's the selfishness of those choices that's annoying. By all means die if you want to, but how many are you planning to take with you?

mathanxiety · 22/05/2020 09:30

Excellent Guardian article, BCF. The long hand of the Puritans is responsible for so much sheer evil in the US. In my state, 'brave', 'patriots' recently held a small and rather pathetic demonstration at the State Capitol, with one woman holding up a poster equating the (Jewish) governor with Hitler. She was challenged by a politician heading for the Chamber. In the State House of Representatives a Republican representative was ejected from the House by a majority, bipartisan vote because he refused to wear a face mask. The only cheering thought I have is that at least I have the option of a return to Ireland. Hundreds of millions of people are stuck here.

TatianaBis · 22/05/2020 09:36

I don’t think it’s selfish to go to the shops (presumably in OAP hour) or go out for a walk.

We have everyone’s mental health to consider as well as physical.

It’s not realsitic to think that everyone can stay inside until this is over. We’re just going to have to get used to a new normal in which there’s a higher degree of risk.

OldLace · 22/05/2020 09:48

Feeling depressed this morning.
School for my Y10 (ASD, Anxiety & Dyslexia/Dyspraxia/Dysgraphia)
One contact in the 8? weeks since lockdown. Asked for work home in physical form as can't access laptops reliably (on FSM so should qualify for the much vaunted 'free Chromebook loan' - hah!
School have posted a workbook - for the wrong exam board (Y10)

My Y8 - her School 'may' be going back on 8th June, but only Y6's (she is in a Middle school and due to transition, also ASD, SEN)

We are all alive and well, so it's 'small potatoes' compared to some folk. But it's still a bloody shambles. Sorry for vent. I want to move.

yoikes · 22/05/2020 09:51

tatiana
My childrens lives are being slowly eroded, their futures destroyed and for what? To protect these selfish fuckers?
Then To be laughingly told that they don't care?
And what about young peoples MH???
The sheer number of vulnerable kids now at the mercy of their abusive carers/parents is horrifying.
Do you care about them?
I suppose it's far more important to pander to those who can vote?
Ffs

yoikes · 22/05/2020 09:52

..
On the plus side I now know who I respect and who I don't.

Lots of folks have shown their true colours lately.

Handy.

TheABC · 22/05/2020 09:52

@mrslaughan, I found myself nodding throughout your post. We are another family of dyslexics (both sides but it keep DH and me), so I am off to look up everything suggested. Thank you.

This is the last I will say on the subject as it's too interesting a thread for derailment.Smile
