but what prevents goods arriving direct into NI from elsewhere

Well it will effectively be in the sm/cu so the checks will be at it's border, same as any other EU country. Goods are then free to travel anywhere in the EU.

KenDodd · 16/02/2020 18:48

So the whole of the island of Ireland will have -
No checks for goods travelling between EU countries (including NI)
Checks at the borders for goods entering the EU from countries outside of the EU, so checks on goods coming from/going to Britain.

MysteryTripAgain · 16/02/2020 18:59

Was two years enough for joining be considered good or bad? We had one then

UK had already joined and I would be interested to see evidence that there were measurable benefits to the UK in such a short time after joining. Plus there was no Article 50 then and EU only had 9 members. None of which were former FSU countries who take from the EU.

we will be on the EU's WTO schedules if there is no deal

But not for all the other WTO members. So what prevents dodgy goods arriving direct in NI? Smugglers paradise knowing there is an open border between a WTO and EU country, particular as WTO disputes mechanism has gone.

What DC said isn't of any consequence, leavers love to cite his word as gospel but forget all the promises he made and didnt keep

I haven’t forgotten the recession and job losses that he said were coming if UK voted to leave.

MysteryTripAgain · 16/02/2020 19:03

Is every inch of the coastline going to be policed? Something tells me that NI will be a target for smuggling in the future deal or no deal. An open border into the EU is a big attraction.

KenDodd · 16/02/2020 19:11

Is every inch of the coastline going to be policed?

I expect all the ports will be, just like now for goods coming from outside the EU.

ListeningQuietly · 16/02/2020 19:13

lljkk
I've been bad of late - too cold and wet to garden, no children at home to clean up behind, a quiet time work wise
I'll get a life again soon - promise Grin

KenDodd · 16/02/2020 19:13

There won't be an open border into the EU, there will be checks between Britain and Ireland.

malylis · 16/02/2020 19:18

You don't understand how the WTO works.

The schedules that the UK trades under at the minute are the EU'S schedules. We can't change the rules on what we put tariffs and quotas on, or what state aid we give, without the agreement of the rest of the WTO on this.

The fact that you don't understand that nothing is going to change for NI is very funny. Where is the incentive for it to be a smugglers paradise now?

If you are implying that people will smuggle UK goods into Ireland through NI and then on through Ireland to the EU then you are far fetched, you also don't understand how FOM of goods works.

MysteryTripAgain · 16/02/2020 20:53

From the UK or from outside the EU what’s the difference? It’s all smuggling.

malylis · 16/02/2020 21:01

Cause there is little incentive to do this?

This really is a figment of your imagination.

MysteryTripAgain · 16/02/2020 21:23

Smuggling has the same in incentive everywhere. To sell goods cheaper by evading duties.

KenDodd · 16/02/2020 21:25

@MysteryTripAgain
What is it exactly you think is going to happen, smuggling from Britain into Ireland (the EU sm/cu)? Of what? Are you thinking the same sort of smuggling we have now, drugs etc? It sounds like you think a new sort of smuggling will be born? I'm a little bit unclear about what you mean.

KenDodd · 16/02/2020 21:28

To sell goods cheaper by evading duties

So individuals/small scale criminals smuggling cigarettes and tobacco?
I wasn't sure what you meant and thought you were imagining Nissan smuggling car parts to avoid tariffs :D

malylis · 16/02/2020 21:37

I don't think it will lead to increases in smuggling I think that's mystery's fantasy.

Of course FOM of goods doesn't mean any checks at the border, it does still require paperwork on country of origin and other things so in no way will smugglers be incentivised to smuggle from the UK to N.I to access the EU.

Especially as the UK (barring a Minfordian offer of unilateral free trade) will have the same tariffs as the EU in the event of no deal.

ChristmasCarcass · 17/02/2020 19:28

Is every inch of the coastline going to be policed?

Is every inch of the ROU coastline going to be policed either? Is every inch of the French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian etc coastline policed now?

If you want to smuggle stuff into the EU, there are far easier and less complicated ways of doing it than smuggling by sea into NI then trying to get it across a land border.

ChristmasCarcass · 17/02/2020 19:28

*ROI, thanks autocorrect

bellinisurge · 17/02/2020 19:42

There is going to be a sea border. Johnson signed up to it.

Snausage · 17/02/2020 19:54

The reaction to Colin's tweet has been hilarious. Schiphol themselves responded to the "issue" and confirmed it was nothing to do with Brexit, but they were experiencing delays that day at the airport due to staff training. There are no changes to Brits travelling around Europe during the transition period.

MysteryTripAgain · 17/02/2020 19:55

Went through Schiphol this afternoon and there were more people at the self service passport gates than at the non EU lines.

MysteryTripAgain · 17/02/2020 19:58

There is going to be a sea border. Johnson signed up to it

Said he would die in a ditch before agreeing an extension, but did not happen.

Peregrina · 17/02/2020 20:15

What Johnson says, and what he actually signs are two different things....

ListeningQuietly · 17/02/2020 20:59

Johnson Thinks
Johnson Says
Johnson Does
is a Venn diagram that looks like this .....

O

o

Peregrina · 17/02/2020 21:09

Is Johnson still the PM? Did Cummings allow him to keep his job?

Worrieddad72 · 17/02/2020 22:00

Cartoon in the Guardian nails it
