To be fair , the estimable Adam Fleming (of BREXITCAST/Newscast fame) explained that there was staff training at Schipol on that day which lead to unusual length of queues. I am inclined to believe him .
While laughing a lot at the silliness of the original tweet

CrunchyCarrot · 15/02/2020 09:58

My DP travels weekly to various European locations and hasn't had to stand in Immigration queues. He rightly pointed out that the queues are based on biometric or non-biometric enabled passports. If you have an EU passport (and at this point all UK passports are EU passports) they have a biometric code and as such there's no need to stand in long queues. He has proved this himself just last week.

If 5 years of a labour government was too difficult to comprehend rather than a lifetime of Brexi.

It wasn't just 5 years though - Labour wanted to tip the electorate in their favour for generations. From their 2019 manifesto;

"We will oversee the largest extension of the franchise in generations, reducing the voting age to 16, giving full voting rights to all UK residents."

Full voting rights to all UK residents!!! Which EU country gives full voting rights to foreign nationals?

Clavinova · 15/02/2020 10:40

I wonder what people like Colin will say when the duty limits change?
Sept 2019:
"Under a no-deal Brexit, UK excise duty would no longer be due on alcohol and cigarettes bought when leaving Britain, the Treasury said, meaning a bottle of wine bought at Heathrow by a departing passenger would be up to £2.23 cheaper."

"People returning from the EU would have the choice of continuing to purchase and bring home unlimited amounts of cigarettes and alcohol with duty paid–as is the case now–or to buy limited amounts at duty-free shops in EU countries instead.According to figures provided by the Treasury, someone buying two crates of beer would save £12."

Bearbehind · 15/02/2020 10:55

I voted Tory because lack of options" isn't going to age well. Just as " I voted brexit for freedom" isn't aging well.

I’m not really bothered how it ‘ages’ - the fact is it’s true for me

Bearbehind · 15/02/2020 10:58

If 5 years of a labour government was too difficult to comprehend rather than a lifetime of Brexit, then it just shows how selfish some people are.

5 years of a sensible labour government wasn’t too difficult for many of us to understand

Unfortunately we weren’t offered that, rather one who thought people were stupid enough to believe we could all have loads of free stuff and still no clarity on Brexit

InsiderMole · 15/02/2020 11:01

people were stupid enough to believe we could all have loads of free stuff and still no clarity on Brexit

But 'people' were stupid enough as it turned out, because that's exactly what the tories are offering.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 15/02/2020 11:31

Unfortunately we weren’t offered that, rather one who thought people were stupid enough to believe we could all have loads of free stuff and still no clarity on Brexit

This is too funny...

Mistigri · 15/02/2020 11:35

Free stuff + no clarity on Brexit sounds awfully like Tory party policy right now.

DGRossetti · 15/02/2020 13:25

No quite sure why Clav answered a question that wasn't asked ? I really hope they aren't working in a role where attention to detail is needed. Things could go terribly wrong.

@Clavinova - no deal is off the table. You'll need to find the new customs arrangements to cut and påste, when you get a moment.

KenDodd · 15/02/2020 13:38

@Clavinova
It wasn't just 5 years though - Labour wanted to tip the electorate in their favour for generations

I would point the this in response to your statement above and ask who exactly is the electoral system is tipped towards.

Poor Colin.

He should be furious with the politicians and billionaire tax avioders who sold him the lie of Brexit. It's only when the scales fall from his eyes that we can right this wrong. Sadly I think he'll continue to be manipulated by them into believing the lack of sunlit uplands is all the fault of the EU or Remainers or immigrants etc.

DioneTheDiabolist · 15/02/2020 13:59

Brexit Party MEPs don't necessarily agree with the Conservatives.
The Brexit Party no longer have any MEPs. They all finished being MEPs last month when we left the EU.

Poor Colin.Grin

MongerTruffle · 15/02/2020 14:22

@CrunchyCarrot Most other countries have biometric passports as well. The queues are separated into those who have freedom of movement and those who do not. When EEA and Swiss citizens travel within the EEA and Switzerland, the immigration officer only checks their identity, nationality, the authenticity of their passport/ID card and if there are any alerts on the relevant databases. For all other citizens, the purpose and duration of their stay, how much money they have etc is verified, and their passport is stamped.
If you are not an EEA or Swiss citizen, even if you have a biometric passport, you cannot use the ePassport gates (except in a few countries for a few nationalities).

ListeningQuietly · 15/02/2020 14:49

Monger
But the UK is in the transition period and UK passports still work in the e-gates all over the EU

FET2020 · 15/02/2020 14:53

Are people still really getting their knickers in a twist about Brexit? I thought the new mass hysteria was about some virus 🦠😂

Clavinova · 15/02/2020 15:57

The Brexit Party no longer have any MEPs

Well yes, that's obvious - she was an MEP at the time - 21st/22nd Jan.

I would point to this in response to your statement above and ask who exactly is the electoral system is tipped towards.

From the stats in your link I can't see the Labour Party opting for proportional representation either - the original post was about the Labour Party. PR does have disadvantages as well - it's not necessarily a better voting system than FPTP (PR gives extremist parties more representation, disconnects MPs from constituencies etc.) The Liberal Democrats were kingmakers in 2010 - they fluffed it. Far too many SNP MPs I see.

no deal is off the table.

Great - I don't know what you are all worrying about then.

when the duty limits change

The Guardian article gives an either/or;

"People returning from the EU would have the choice of continuing to purchase and bring home unlimited amounts of cigarettes and alcohol with duty paid–as is the case now–or to buy limited amounts at duty-free shops in EU countries instead" [in the event of a no deal].

MongerTruffle · 15/02/2020 16:08

But the UK is in the transition period and UK passports still work in the e-gates all over the EU

Yes

Gronky · 15/02/2020 17:37

The irony of laughing at 'stupid leavers' while falling for a parody message is palpable. Even if you weren't familiar with Schiphol or didn't recognise the biometric scanners, there's a sign in the photo itself.

jas I appreciate you don’t like me and disagree with most of what I say and that’s entirely your choice but you really don’t need to be so rude

I’m entitled to my opinion as you are to yours

And if you’d actually read that post you’d see it was in response to another where someone said you could tell how people voted on Brexit by their views on climate change and cyclist - I was pointing out those were my opinions on the 3 things and that did not align with the PP’s assertion

I do find it quite unbelievable how so many people think continuing to hound anyone who voted Tory is somehow going to change anything now though

Jason118 · 15/02/2020 19:06

I will continue to point out to Tory voters the things that are shit because of how they voted. They wanted it, they own it, and they will get called out on it. Every time.

malylis · 15/02/2020 19:17

Laughing at leavers who give reasons about unelected Bureaucrats etc but support Dominic Cummings.

Those who shouted about the EU being anti democratic but were keen supporters or Boris porogation of parliament.

Aye, there are lots of reasons to laugh at stupid leavers.

Although not all are stupid!

MysteryTripAgain · 15/02/2020 19:22

Hmmm....

Maybe it needs to be reiterated:

Voting has two requirements:

Be over voting age

Make the effort to vote by whatever means are available.

MysteryTripAgain · 15/02/2020 19:24

Since 1918 conservatives have won 20 general elections compared to labours 8. Sounds like UK is a bigger supporter of conservatives than labour.
