Brexit Arms - Out with the old and in with the new

It’s time again for another Brexit Arms thread to see us into Christmas and beyond.

Well what a week it’s been!!

Boris has now completed his first week and he’s been busy. New conservatives have been sworn in, the Queens Speech yesterday shows promise (aware that the proof of the (Xmas) pudding is in the eating) and Boris’ Deal is going to be voted on today with the results being around 3pm I believe.

Meanwhile, on the other side all four wheels have definitely fallen off the red bus and were very nearly joined by a garden gate and a car door. Oh dear!!

Anyway, I have added a few more Christmas decs to the pub and popped the fairy back on the tree (it took a nasty tumble)

We are now good to go.
Cheers all 🍷🍷

Ps. If anyone wants to volunteer for outside catering that would be👍🏻

cars flying Iranian flags doing a protest on my street.

I'm a Londoner - GET ME OUT OF HERE!!!

SingingLily · 05/01/2020 17:46

Autumn, all OK?

AutumnRose1 · 05/01/2020 17:49

yes, but I wish they would stop bibbing their horns.

what's the point, no one on this street is responsible for what's happened. Argh. Argh. I knew I'd have to be prepared for all sorts going into Central London, but in Zone 5? I was not prepared for this.

I wonder if it's a terrible idea to pop outside and ask them to be quiet....texting others in building now....

SingingLily · 05/01/2020 17:51

Stay put. It's a nuisance but no more than that.

XingMing · 05/01/2020 17:55

Farmers across the EU want a soft Brexit too.

Tourism industries from sun to snow zones would not like to lose the (better behaved) Brit tourists.

Auto and white goods manufacturers sell tons of their goods here... and we sell services.

I didn't read the HoL rejigged as regional assemblies, article in the ST, but would agree that some form of regional talking shop, perhaps on Mondays, involving both Lords and MPs would focus attention on local concerns outside of London.

SingingLily · 05/01/2020 17:58

I'm trying to think of the worst thing that's ever happened in my village - a few months ago, we had a runaway horse galloping down the main road so the villagers turned out to search for the rider on the bridle paths while someone stopped the horse, calmed it, and temporarily stabled it at the farm across the road. All organised by mobile phone.

The really amazing thing is that we all managed to get a phone signal at the same time. Unheard of.

I'm trying to keep you distracted, Autumn. If you wanted excitement, you really should have moved to the country. Grin

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 05/01/2020 18:10

Jesus Autumn! Is anything likely to kick off or are they just noisy buggers at this stage?

XingMing · 05/01/2020 18:30

Autumn, look on the bright side... It might rain. It damps down most protests. I do hope it all comes to naught.

Coppersulphate · 05/01/2020 19:21

Please don't go out Autumn. It will probably lose momentum of its own accord.
Asking them to be quiet could just make it worse.

SingingLily · 05/01/2020 19:54

Have they moved on, Autumn? Really hoping so.

AutumnRose1 · 05/01/2020 19:55

Thanks all

A few of us did go out and they’ve gone away

Dunno what they thought they were achieving.

SingingLily · 05/01/2020 19:59

As long as you are safe.

scaryteacher · 05/01/2020 20:23

Xing and we sell services There is however, no such thing as a single market in services..try buying a Brit insurance policy abroad if you are not HM Forces for example.

When I took out car insurance when we got back, I proffered up the evidence that I had driven for over 5 years in belgium without an accident. 'We don't accept foreign NCBs, they are not reliable' was the sneering response. I pointed out that the company whose NCB they were taking issue with was AXA...who were underwriting the policy I was trying to take out. Duh.

There really are times that a Cup of Tea and a Biscuit or two are the best order of the day.

Galloping (Escaping) Horses - I can think of at least 2 occasions when I have come across these whilst driving along - the first driving along an English country lane as a child with my sisters and Mum (driving) at night when a grey pony galloped past dragging the rope and stake it had pulled itself from. We stopped and caught him and I ended up good friends with them.

The second was in Oz, driving along alone outside of Melbourne and a fully-saddled horse galloped by. I pulled over , put my hazards on and gave chase. Thankfully caught it in a shopping precinct about a mile up the road - I was fit, being one of the few Lady Aussie Rules players back then - being a whinging pommie sheila I felt it the best 'retort'. Play yer National Sport Mate, all you can do is push a shopping trolley....and whinge about Poms.

Explained my concerns to the gathering crowd about the saddle and no rider and that I had left my car running with the keys in and hazards flashing about a mile up the road. And ran back.

Thankfully my running, flashing car was still there. I don't know what happened to the horse or the rider. It was pre-mobile phone

But I love a good Galloping Horse Anecdote over a Cup and a Rich Tea or two. There are times when staying calm and let the others get through their angst before we act is best. I see there's some Ginger Nuts, so don't mind if do whilst I top up my Tea.

does anyone think it will actually 'happen' on Jan 31? and if it does, what will actually 'happen'?

I really cant see it, I can see the next couple of weeks being taken up with US posturing and Iran responses. (Please god we do not enter another bloody stupid war).

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 05/01/2020 21:59

“does anyone think it will actually 'happen' on Jan 31? and if it does, what will actually 'happen'?”

I have to be honest Yolo, I am beginning to wonder if it will go ahead on the 31st now myself, given the developing situation in the middle east. If things de-escalate over the coming days (fingers crossed) then I expect business as usual, but if not, then I guess all bets are off.

Reports of a fresh attack on/near the US embassy floating around on twitter, with casualties reported. So, not de-escalated yet it would seem. 😞

yolofish · 05/01/2020 22:01

TBH, I dont understand what anyone expects Iran to do after this - sit back and say oh yes Mr President he was a bad guy? Of course they are going to be seriously pissed off at such a provocative act.

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 05/01/2020 22:09

Well Yolo.

The stupidest tweet of the year so far ( and the bar is not high) is not going to help...

twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/1213919480574812160?s=21

🤦🏻‍♀️😱

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 05/01/2020 22:09

Imagine notifying congress in a tweet. I have no words.

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 05/01/2020 22:13

I have one word actually.

Megalomania.

TheWorldturnedUpsideDown · 05/01/2020 23:18

Hello everyone, I hope you all had a truly glorious festive season.

I'm going to read back later, and see what I've missed.
It made me titter earlier.. There are calls for peace but trump is still tweeting....

I know its serious and I shouldn't.. But I couldn't help it.

There is a wondeful poster called hefzi who posts on stuff like this. She has commented somewhere in chat I think, no war, some skirmishes but nothing more, not all out war.
The mob in Iran are forced to be there, people in Iran hated solemni, but strangely, he kept the middle east somewhat contained.

Not verbatim 😂😂.

Feel sorry for Labour with the new candidates..
Only carline flint could take them forward...

TheWorldturnedUpsideDown · 05/01/2020 23:22

Hefzi also notes media are usually clueless in this area and whip up a frenzy because that's what media does.

In reality most Iranians hate their dictator and are trapped much like the people of North Korea..

SingingLily · 06/01/2020 07:37

Morning, all,

Parliament reconvenes tomorrow and without a doubt, there will be a statement in the House from either Boris or Dominic Raab. My prediction is that Jezbollah will find some way to support his friends in Iraq and Iran and the five leadership hopefuls will have their say through the media as they court votes from the Labour Party membership. I am not minimising the situation but the point is, domestic politics will go on regardless of what is happening 3252 miles away.

We will still leave on 31 January. As it stands, there is no reason not to and every reason to go ahead in terms of domestic government policy.

Today, the Labour NEC will determine the rules of the leadership contest. The five candidates declared so far have to meet the minimum criteria for nominations but the key question is who is eligible to vote. The NEC's ruling could potentially sway the field in favour of the centrists or the hard left. Jess Phillips has made a pronouncement on the EU which will make Labour Leavers think twice. Not the same as Jo Swinson's spectacularly successful stance but as near as makes no difference in terms of listening to your voters.

But never mind! The Arms is open for business and today's complimentary breakfast tray offers Eggs Benedict, named for a Wall Street broker and not Benedict Arnold.

Kettle's on. ☕️☕️☕️

XingMing · 06/01/2020 09:02

Morning all! Cup of coffee please, Lily.

Very true Scary, it's theoretical. Situations like that are so irksome. I encountered it when I suggested that my time with companies in the US could be considered "professional experience".

However, I am impressed with your driving record in Belgium: so many accident-free years! They drive like maniacs: I had a tour around Brussels and Louvain with a certain parcel delivery firm, and my heart was in my mouth the whole time.
