Brexit Arms - Out with the old and in with the new

It’s time again for another Brexit Arms thread to see us into Christmas and beyond.

Well what a week it’s been!!

Boris has now completed his first week and he’s been busy. New conservatives have been sworn in, the Queens Speech yesterday shows promise (aware that the proof of the (Xmas) pudding is in the eating) and Boris’ Deal is going to be voted on today with the results being around 3pm I believe.

Meanwhile, on the other side all four wheels have definitely fallen off the red bus and were very nearly joined by a garden gate and a car door. Oh dear!!

Anyway, I have added a few more Christmas decs to the pub and popped the fairy back on the tree (it took a nasty tumble)

We are now good to go.
Cheers all 🍷🍷

Ps. If anyone wants to volunteer for outside catering that would be👍🏻

I think most of us actually want the same things: for people to be safe, housed, fed and have a job that makes them feel worthwhile and enables them to bring up their families in security.

Peace and love to all.

I'll drink to that 🍷

SingingLily · 23/12/2019 23:02

And people on low income can just have the cheap US imports with a higher chance of bacteria in them...

Well, I thought chlorination was about actively reducing bacteria. However, anyone concerned about its use in the production of food might care to read this:

blogs.spectator.co.uk/2017/07/ignore-the-scare-stories-from-remainers-over-chlorinated-chicken/

And should stay away from Australian chicken because it is also chlorinated:

www.baby-mac.com/2013/04/from-paddock-to-plate-inglewood-chicken/

And should definitely stay away from buying any bagged salad right here in the UK because it is, erm, chlorinated too.

www.healthyfood.com/ask-the-experts/lettuce-and-chlorine/

In fact, should not drink any tap water in this country or try to sterilise a baby's bottle because...chlorination.

Gets everywhere, that stuff.

SingingLily · 23/12/2019 23:13

@XingMing, not sure what's going on over there but perhaps it's time for a break and a nightcap 🍷.

chomalungma · 23/12/2019 23:24

Gets everywhere, that stuff

It's not the chlorine that's the issue. But I guess you knew that anyway.

XingMing · 23/12/2019 23:34

Why the heck would you buy chicken from Brazil? I wouldn't eat Danish pork products or American beef either. I eat meat in limited amounts: but decently reared and produced meat, not the stuff the supermarkets pile high and sell cheap.

Oh dear, as some of you have seen, I fell among Westminsterenders. They are not kind there, if you disagree with them. Ouch!

SingingLily · 23/12/2019 23:38

Well, let's hope the imports have high food standards.
At least we now have control so we can take full control of imports and ensure that the importing countriies have low levels of bacterial contamination.

And even lower levels of radioactive contamination...

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/11/26/radioactive-food-fukushima-will-heading-uk-eu-plans/

TheWorldturnedUpsideDown · 24/12/2019 00:31

Farming standards in the the eu has been done to death. They say standard are high but reality is they are not.. There is no fit body to regulate it all and punish those who cheat... Pig farming across eu is awful, awful standards many countries are not on the same page as the UK when it comes to farming and by god we are far from perfect.

Xing I've gone very funny about meat, chicken used to be a posh meal once a month treat. I buy less chicken and I only buy meat from waitrose and buy better quality one when I do.

Scary, hope your feeling more chipper tomorrow. Love the vignettes from the your life.
. Re eu failing... Yes yes and yes. It was never sold as this success was it.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 24/12/2019 01:48

In other xmas news, what does anyone think of the Labour inquiry into the election defeat being lead by Ed Miliband?

Its was the medias fault, it was Blairs fault, it was Brexit, it was stupid voters, it was Boris and his lies. But is was NOT Corbynism.

Is it cover to allow a Rebecca Wrong Bailey coronation?

SingingLily · 24/12/2019 07:04

Morning, All,

The rain is back! We're never going to have snow on Christmas Day at this rate but hang your sou'westers on the row of hooks near the door and dry out near the roaring fire in the snug, here in that hotbed of optimism, the Brexit Arms.

Today, the complimentary breakfast tray has a German theme: frühstück with freshly baked brötchen, butter, marmalade and honig, and three different kinds of stollen. You can never have too much stollen! Please help yourselves.

Kettle's on ☕️☕️☕️

Morning Brew

Not raining here at the moment....

Looking forward to a day of doing cock all I think - watching telly & generally mooching about

Popped to Aldi & Morrison's yesterday night in the end so I've no reason to leave the house or get dressed today 🙌

Can't believe it's actually Xmas tomorrow! 😱😱😱

hospitalityinspector · 24/12/2019 07:22

Happy Christmas to all the staff and patrons of the Brexit Arms: the hotbed of optimism. Xmas Smile
Thank you all for the wit, seriousness, factual research and discussion.

Warm wishes too to the droppers-in who have accepted a peaceful drink and a welcome from our kind landladies.

Lurkers, de-lurk and pop in for a quiet seat in the corner with one of Lily's tempting breakfast items and enjoy the banter and discussion.

yolofish On a message of peace love and understanding (copyright Mr. E. Costello) I think most of us actually want the same things: for people to be safe, housed, fed and have a job that makes them feel worthwhile and enables them to bring up their families in security.

I'm absolutely sure that all in this thread want exactly this, along with extra care and consideration for those who can't work due to illness, disability and carer responsibilities.

I'm about to be descended upon but I'll be sneaking in to check what's going on in the bar. Hope you all have a great Christmas. My round for a mulled wine and a mince pie for all. Wine

TheWorldturnedUpsideDown · 24/12/2019 07:25

Dusty it's a lovely feeling isn't it when your done and can hunker down.

Enjoy your relaxing day.
I was looking forward to cats but after the dire reviews, it's a mistake I'm going to have to get through. £30 worth of mistake too.

TheWorldturnedUpsideDown · 24/12/2019 07:27

You too hospitality. StarXmas Smile

hospitalityinspector · 24/12/2019 07:32

Lily that looks delicious. I forgot to get stollen Xmas Sad

Dusty I've got 'doing cock all' firmly entrenched in my brain now thanks to you. You're the master of doing cock-all Xmas Grin. Good thinking going shopping last night instead of braving the crowds today.

Is anyone missing all the political discussion on TV? I've been moaning about it for ever: 'can't stand anymore of this going round in circles, asking the same old questions' but now all that's on is cartoons and old films.

SingingLily · 24/12/2019 07:41

Don't worry, Hospitality, there will still be stollen in the shops just after Christmas.

I'll be in the kitchen for much of the day baking and listening to a selection of favourite music from my trusty Echo. The only problem is I stopped all explicit lyrics on there and now it refuses to play Fairytale of New York or Eton Rifles. I didn't even know Eton Rifles had any explicit lyrics.

Still don't understand why Paul Weller thought it was a good idea to go down the Underground at Midnight.

TheWorldturnedUpsideDown · 24/12/2019 07:48

What are you baking singing.

I missed the boat on the ginger bread House. But I have some dough in the freezer to do something ginger bread men.

I got a ham, gammon to do something with and I'll make homemade sausage rolls.

I have Google home for music but don't know how to do a ready made play list.

Is eton rifles an Xmas song Xmas Confused

SingingLily · 24/12/2019 07:55

Is eton rifles an Xmas song

😂No, World, but there's only so much Christmas music I can take so I divert into other music.

Baking mince pies and tomorrow's starter: smoked salmon, horseradish and dill tartlets. They freeze really well so also get added to any tray of "snacky bits" over the festive season when we are settled in front of the TV and can't be bothered with a sit-down meal.

I'll make homemade sausage rolls. Mmm, homemade sausage rolls. Do you add anything to the sausagemeat?

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 24/12/2019 08:02

Just dropping by to wish you all a very happy Christmas Xmas Smile
It’s been a bumpy ride these last few years hasn’t it, & I must admit, at times I thought we’d never get brexit. I really thought ‘they’ would stop it.
So we end 2019 on a massive high - WE DID IT! Xmas Grin

the days of this thread being invaded by bonkers trolls ( anyone remember smallfox? 😂 ) are well & truly over.

Here’s to us Wine
The brave. Xmas Smile

TheWorldturnedUpsideDown · 24/12/2019 08:19

Dirty if you scroll back there is a beautiful picture of small fox 🦊.

Singing those tartlets sound delicious.
We are having smoked salmon, water cress, salmon mouse thing starter but I couldn't get asparagus Xmas Shock

Caramelised apple, onion, sage etc.. Mustard in the sausage meat, nothing fancy, it was a bridge to far this year.

Now your making me fancy a smkd salmon canapés with dill and sour cream.
What smkd salmon does everyone buy? I'm sure salmon was far more tasty when I was younger... Less greasy.

I've gone for john Ross.

Limer · 24/12/2019 08:23

Morning everyone, wow Lily, I didn't even know there WERE three different kinds of stollen!

Theworld Cats I'm really looking forward to seeing, the "dire" reviews have made me even keener! No plot - excellent. It's just people dressed up as cats, singing and dancing - what's not to like?

A spot of cooking this morning for me, then off to the pub for the afternoon Grin Christmas music all the way Xmas Grin

SingingLily · 24/12/2019 08:40

It's just people dressed up as cats, singing and dancing - what's not to like?

I think it's the CGI effects that disturb people, Limer. I've only read the reviews and don't want to say more so as not to spoil it for World but apparently, it's best to suspend all disbelief and treat it as a cat ballet.

What smkd salmon does everyone buy?

Usually John Ross too, World, but some friends came to visit from Up North and brought some hot smoked salmon from the Port of Lancaster Smokehouse. I loved that place. They did smoked sausages and smoked garlic as well.

Now I'm homesick again....

time4chocolate · 24/12/2019 09:00

Morning one and all Brew Xmas Smile

Think I have finally got there with the preps - just plopped a ham in the slow cooker (doing it in ginger beer, which is a first for me so I'll report back on how that goes!) and like Dusty I am hoping to do a fair bit of 'cock all' today.

World On the Christmas music front I have a bit of Christmas Michael Buble playing at the mo but I can recommend 'Heart Xmas' radio station for non-stop Christmas music.

Dirtyrotten - certainly has been a bumpy ride but we got there🍷

Whatever's going on over there Xing what were you thinking?

you'd have got a proper telling off here for that as well and rightly so.

hopefully normality will break out again.

just an update on the "friend" who turned out to be a member of Britain First. I did have to speak to her because she wanted to meet after Boxing Day. I was honest. It was almost amusing; I know she's lost a lot of friends lately but it turns out that's why and she's wondering if I can help her understand.

I just said no. (as opposed to HA HA HA HA no).

I'm off to mum's later and I have no idea how to explain this one as she doesn't even know what Britain First is. At the age of 81, I like to protect her from bad things!

Catsingangs · 24/12/2019 09:41

Xing showed their true colours last night, probably Wine
The poor should eat offal, people coming to this country with their 'ways' and a charming analysis of 'woke' people that got deleted by MNHQ.
Happy Christmas.

AutumnRose1 · 24/12/2019 10:18

I know Lily is busy hiding back copies of the Spectator in advance of rellies visiting!

but I just did a trial subscription and I can attend the Jan event for free. Has anyone been to any of these, wondering what they are like?

thanks.
