A Warm welcome to you Conjunction! 😊 💧

Great post, agree with all of it! I feel the same on PPR, I was a very strong cheerleader for it several years ago, but I must admit, my appetite for it, in the face of recent shenanigans and the way it could just end up making political diivisions even worse, is waning significantly. I’m not honestly sure what the answer is there!

And don’t worry Lily, I fell on the sword, clicked the link and I still live to tell the tale! 😂

conjunctionjunction · 15/12/2019 15:45

I completely understand, SingingLily. No nasties lurk there, but to quote Mandy, I would say that, wouldn't I.

DustyDiamond · 15/12/2019 15:49

I clicked - it's very funny 😉

Worth a 👀

Top link conjunction Wine

Completely see your point on Jonathan but you need a better close up of Humza to fully appreciate his eyelashes - 2nd only to Andy B. Blush

My dream governing body would actually be something more like they have in the States, with its senate and house but perhaps one of them using FPTP and the other PR, but that’s for another thread…

Dear me, noooo. The whole point of the American democratic system is that it stands on three equal legs. At least two of them have to agree. It was designed that way to stop a raging narcissist or despot from rampaging all over democracy. We've had quite enough American ideas grafted unsuccessfully onto our uniquely unwritten constitution already (see Police & Crime Commissioners, Supreme Court, etc).

The HoC has primacy precisely because it is elected and therefore has democratic legitimacy. If the upper chamber was also elected, this would further dent our time-tested concept of constitutional law and set up a clash between the two Houses that, given the current composition of the HoL, would result in stasis.

I agree that the HoL needs serious pruning and reform but have deep reservations about a second elected chamber.

But, as you say, that's for another thread.

DuckWillow · 15/12/2019 16:10

Trying to get my head round it all at the moment.
So we leave end of Jan and enter a transition period where everything stays mostly the same while Boris or whoever negotiates trade deals yes?

Still not over happy with everything but glad there is now a majority Govt to push things forward. It's been too fraught before.

HateIsNotGood · 15/12/2019 16:13

Hi All - a pint of Best please. I've brought some fried kashkaval cheese, goat shish kabobs and some blackberry raki to wash it down with.

A very big round of applause to the LLs and regulars who have kept me laughing with their high wit, brevity and excellent hosting skills through what has been 'a very difficult time'.

I won't make any 'special mentions' but some here get huge respect from me for being so hilarious whilst also making very good points.

I'll just go back to the fire, throw a log on it, and exchange knowing looks with H again. As we were.

conjunctionjunction · 15/12/2019 16:17

This link's for you, howabout: twitter.com/humzayousaf/status/573986198412197888?lang=en

howabout · 15/12/2019 16:22

On the Constitution I agree with Lily.

On FPTP it isn't perfect but the only thing which seems to prevent middle ground stasis which progressively loses democratic legitimacy eg Germany, Ireland - no-one mentions that Leo has never won an election as Taoiseach and his party (FG) only polled 25% of the vote in 2016. Angela Merkel's CDU/CSU boasts a 33% vote share but due to PR can barely hold together a coalition and thus zero accountability. Scotland is in danger of going the same way at Holyrood.

FPTP has the virtue of concentrating the minds of voters to at least choose a least bad option. As Cameron-May-Boris demonstrates the same Party can behave completely differently depending on the Leadership. PR tends to make murky waters ever murkier - hence the worst excesses of Osbornomics facilitated by Cleggmania.

GreenishMe · 15/12/2019 16:23

Happy Brexit everyone....love the new thread.

....I'll just help myself to a Prosecco while I catch up with the thread..

howabout · 15/12/2019 16:23

Told you so conjunction Grin Grin

DustyDiamond · 15/12/2019 16:31

I agree that the HoL needs serious pruning and reform but have deep reservations about a second elected chamber.

Me too

I quite like the set up we have tbh, but the HoL is def bloated & needs drastic culling

An upper age limit or finite term limit is something I could get behind

Another pint please. I'm buoyed by our elected PM's choice of words and actions immediately after his Govt's election. The recognition that so many have 'lent' him his vote and he "won't let us down". His Advisors are advising him well and I think he means it. I'm sure he also recognizes the wrath that will rain down on him should he not follow through.

I hope he appoints Caroline Flint as a special advisor on Northern England Regeneration.

howabout · 15/12/2019 16:37

Agreed Hate. Word to the wise from one Blonde Ambition to another Boris.

HateIsNotGood · 15/12/2019 16:40

HoL shake up. Hmmm, not sure on this, as it's already sustained a pretty recent shake up - hiving off inherited peerages and replacing with appointed lifetime ones.

Wasn't there an idea mooted not too long ago for a People's Assembly? Now, if selection was based on a similar system to Jury Service, randomly with criteria, and not by nomination, I'd incline towards that.

Needsmorechocolate · 15/12/2019 16:42

Just came by and saw “ you are buoyed by our elected PM’s choice of words”
Even in the brexit arms I thought you would know he is a serial liar (including lieing to the queen which is on the record as he had to apologises for it)
Enjoy the victory but wait for actions
if you are naive enough tbelieve anything Boris says as opposed to
Does I have a bridge to sell you 😊SmileSmile

GreenishMe · 15/12/2019 16:51

Oh dear....when are they going to shut up :(

HateIsNotGood · 15/12/2019 16:54

Chocolate - you mean like liar, liar pants on fire? Actually, there's been so much overuse of the word 'liar' in all it's forms I'm totally immune to it really.

I'm getting another pint - would you like one?

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 15/12/2019 16:55

“Just came by and saw “ you are buoyed by our elected PM’s choice of words”

Excellent, hope you saw the door on your way through too.

Needsmorechocolate · 15/12/2019 16:59

Glad you are all so convinced of your new prime minister’s (or maybe you just think all politicians lie or maybe you believe everyone lies!
It is an open forum ...
But happy to be given the many many example of boris’s truthfulness
And glad you think lieing to the queen is fine!

HateIsNotGood · 15/12/2019 17:00

I was also rather buoyed by the turnout in my constituency - up .2% on 2017 to 74.8% - well above national average, in a large rural constituency where the polling station isn't always very close.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 15/12/2019 17:00

“But happy to be given the many many example of boris’s truthfulness”

Feel free to go and ask him directly.

HateIsNotGood · 15/12/2019 17:02

O Dear - goes back to fire, throws log on, exchanges knowing look with H, sips beer, stares at fire.

Saucery · 15/12/2019 17:02

lying. Not usually a spelling pedant but repeated use getting on my tits a little Grin

It’s understandable, I suppose, that some people feel so sad and desperate that they are swooping in to bitchplop. Genuinely feel sorry for anyone who feels the need to do that, futile though it is.

Needsmorechocolate · 15/12/2019 17:03

But you guys are all such fans
Come on - if you support someone you should be happy to say he is truthful
And are you now denying he lied to the queen or just a bit unhappy about being reminded of it ?
