As ever, all are welcome - only one rule:

DON'T BE A TWAT!!

Note: I am a shit host, and not a patch on previous Landladies - I don't cook, I don't clean & I don't prepare drinks. I am a selfish bellend. If you want feeding, there's a microwave in back & a shop down the road. If you want drinks just help yourself 😘 - it's a free bar 🎉🥳🎈

howabout, don't worry. The Labour Party needs all the good advice it can get right now Smile

And before any flashers pop up, may I just reiterate the point I have made constantly and steadfastly for a long time now.

It is not in anybody's interest to have a weak, scattered, fractured Labour Party.

Our democracy, our precious democratic system of government, depends for its life on the Opposition offering a credible government-in-waiting. This, along with a free unfettered and truthful press, acts to keep government honest, sane and sensible and protects us from extremism - of any kind.

Jezza's lamentable leadership of a disintegrating party has failed us in this regard and it has been to the detriment of us all.

MemorialBeach · 15/12/2019 14:55

Thank you for the various answers to my posts. I am about to go out for the rest of the day so can't post a longer response. I will say that the thing which prompted me to post was the comment "Your not engaging with fully functioning people. They've been taken over mentally", which I took to be talking about labour voters (please do correct me if I am wrong).

I did vote remain, my Jamaican boyfriend voted leave, so there will be no accusations of Brexit voters are racist from me. I would like to understand the other side of the argument, because we do all have to continue to live alongside each other. But I completely appreciate your wariness of newcomers - I have seen how other threads on the subject end up. I will probably read more than I post, but thank you for the welcome and I will keep reading.

howabout · 15/12/2019 14:55

Very cathartic read time4chocolate

I'm another one who used to have a wee candle for Chukka - I wonder if he can still be rehabbed?

Lovely and sensible post, and for that you will get nothing but a warm welcome from me. 😊🍷

As always, I completely agree and wholeheartedly support this approach!

SingingLily · 15/12/2019 14:58

Hahaha! I forgot about NHS face

😂That was last month's insult, Epic. I am now officially "Tory Bitch". A man in a red rosette told me so on Thursday. He couldn't make eye contact with me though and he scurried past me like he had the hounds of hell snapping at his heels.

howabout · 15/12/2019 14:58

Memorial have you and your boyfriend not already thrashed both sides of the argument sufficiently? Shock

No point in re-litigating now. Time to build bridges.

SingingLily · 15/12/2019 14:59

Fair comment, Memorial. Welcome back any time.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 15/12/2019 15:01

This is why it’s best I stay away from divisive public political spheres, he would have got a five fingered kiss from me for that, and I have no shame in admitting it! 😂👊

RaiseaGlasstoFreedom · 15/12/2019 15:01

Yy the '' people's vote '' Smile

Don't forget after the 2016 ref there was very serious talk of only allowing certain people to vote.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 15/12/2019 15:03

“Don't forget after the 2016 ref there was very serious talk of only allowing certain people to vote.”

Yes, I do, wasn’t it people over 70 and those without a degree education or some such crap?

RaiseaGlasstoFreedom · 15/12/2019 15:04

How,

It was years ago when I saw him on qt and he appealed to me.
He lost my favour shortly after and for me he could not be rehabilitated. At all, ever.

DustyDiamond · 15/12/2019 15:07

I think I speak for all when I say we would love to get back to a situation where people's right to vote as they see fit is respected, even if others don't agree with it.

100% this 🙌🙌

RaiseaGlasstoFreedom · 15/12/2019 15:07

Yes memorial that was I. Smile

There are some quarters of labour who are exactly that. Rather like someone who is deeply religious, it colours every thought and view. That's exactly the same with some of the Labour supporters we see, including of course corbyn.

So you can't engage with them no, because it's like they are brainwashed. This is why the Labour Party is in general finding self reflection almost impossible... It doesn't fit with the credence and essence....

DustyDiamond · 15/12/2019 15:12

I will probably read more than I post, but thank you for the welcome and I will keep reading.

A dove of peace 🕊 , a 🍷& a genuine hope to see you pitching in with your thoughts & musings in the future - there's always a space in here for genuine people xx

Memorial the other thing from your post which many Remainers have said on these boards is..

'' I want to understand the other side ''

Usually followed by excellent in depth responses from leavers on all aspects of leave at various times. Usually followed by avoidance tactics from the Remainers and rude comments.

I would ask how any one has got to this stage of matters and can't understand any whys?

Not just you memorial but any Remainers who have kept saying this repetitively over 3 + years.

Personally before making any big descion I feel we owe it to ourselves and those around us to furnish and arm ourselves with information.
That means seeking out both sides of the argument. That's why I've never understood the angst over Boris two articles, one for remain and one for leave. Didn't anyone else do this... Even in shorter mental note form?

I could argue for remain as I could for leave. Leave won for me, for all sorts of reasons but I kept an open mind.

If leave had lost, I certainly wouldn't need to mournfully traipse around remain threads like a basset hound, asking '' help me understand ''.

howabout · 15/12/2019 15:17

To my homework just in case anyone's checking Halo

£350m x 52 weeks = £18.2 bn

Always have been very lazy so cba to nitpick on gross vs net re the bus. Also cba to look at Boris addition promises or social care element (which is substantial) because 2018/19 - 2019/20 increase is over £5 bn and more than £20 bn extra by 23/24 already committed.

fullfact.org/health/spending-english-nhs/

or for a more nuanced view

www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/news-item/70-years-of-nhs-spending

Back in the mists of time I used to volunteer to read for the blind. My bent for analysis meant I ended up interpreting a lot of these data rich articles. I still remember the one pointing out the bottomless pit nature of the NHS.

On angsty whatabout the NHS doomsters DD1 would like me to point out that the NHS is and has always been devolved in Scotland. This means Boris couldn't sell it to Donald even if he wanted to. It also means all the Scottish nurses on my FB urging me to vote Labour to secure their payrise are barking up the wrong tree.

On a related note, if by some miracle the Democrats unseat the Donald, I am looking forward to how the Left are going to unwind the anti-US narrative.

Legomadx2 · 15/12/2019 15:20

So very well put @raisegglass in your post above mine.

Beautifully put. Loved every word of that.

SingingLily · 15/12/2019 15:20

Didn't anyone else do this... Even in shorter mental note form?

I did, Raise. Seriously.

The trouble is, the Leave list was miles longer than the Remain one and the clincher for me was, and remains, self-determination. That outweighed and outclassed everything.

yellowallpaper · 15/12/2019 15:27

I was a very lukewarm Leaver and have no fixed political leaning, but I voted conservative because I am as sick of everyone here of being name called and ridiculed. I'm not ignorant or racist or any of the other stuff I've been called for daring to question the Remain stance of denying a legitimate democratic vote and seeking to impose a non democratic decision on me. The Remain and Labour supporters have been vitriolic and condescending in equal measure and I'm just glad the logjam is ended.

At least fellow pub members, we won't ever again have to hear that nonsensical phrase 'people's vote' 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Don't bet on it, Yellowallpaper. Michael Heseltine is today reported as saying "Remainers suffered such a heavy defeat in Thursday's election that the issue of EU membership is dead for 20 years".

😱😱😱

On the plus side, I'm planning to live a lot longer than that and I still won't change my mind.

That's why I've never understood the angst over Boris two articles, one for remain and one for leave. Didn't anyone else do this... Even in shorter mental note form?

Was just talking about this to my eldest!!

Yes! It's what I always do, and what I've always tried to get my boys to do.

A great debater can always argue the case for the 'other side' convincingly & the best way to make any decision in life is to make the strongest case you can for each option as well as be brutally honest about the negatives of each.

For the ref I already knew I was likely to to vote leave, so actively sought to be convinced otherwise (I could not)

I could argue for remain as I could for leave.

Me too

I'm teetotal too, conjunctionjunction, so a glass of water or a builders brew if you'd like something stronger.

You won't mind if I don't click on your link, will you? You are not only new to the Arms but entirely new to Mumsnet and my cautious self only posts on links if they come from posters I know, in case of viruses and other nasties, you see. I'm sure you'll understand.

DustyDiamond · 15/12/2019 15:44

I was walking by, feeling a bit harassed as usual, when the Brexit Arms appeared like a beacon in the night. It looked cozy, so I came in (even though I’m teetotal – horrors!). Am glad I did.
