This corner's getting a bit crowded.

We're going to need a bigger corner WinkGrin

Love those memes, Dusty. Still laughing...

yolofish · 18/12/2019 21:11

FOM for me, and practically everyone I've ever spoken to, has always been about controlled vs uncontrolled. To fill the skill shortages. The other issue for me is overpopulation. I think it was songs who posted this a few pages back.

The issue for me is the immorality, the Empire arrogance of 'importing the skills we need' - why cant we as a country think long term, grow our own people by investing in them? I am absolutely all for sharing knowledge and experience globally, but I think it is wrong that we 'take' NHS staff for eg from poorer countries while not investing in our own young talent here to do those jobs.

Short termism is probably the biggest mistake that all govts of all colours anywhere make - but it's all about the next election innit?

SilverySurfer · 18/12/2019 21:17

Thanks SingingLily I was surprised at how the majority of posters on that thread were happy to discuss the issue as I am genuinely interested. Inevitably the odd hater appeared and interestingly the Labour posters basically told them to back off.

I see there's now a 'Boris Watch' thread on AIBU, following the style of the 'Trump' thread, which is currently at number 95. It's already up to page 3 and BJ hasn't actually done anything yet. So I'm guessing there will be a lot of windbaggery until he does.

Settles in corner chair and sips a glass of red. Cheers.

Agree with this

OP posts:
SingingLily · 18/12/2019 21:25

Can't agree with you on that, Yolofish.

And "Empire"??? I don't know anyone who uses that word.

Songsofexperience · 18/12/2019 21:36

yolo
It wasn't me but I did respond to it. Essentially I think FOM and investing in home grown talent are not incompatible. In fact I think any successful immigration system has to go hand in hand with nurturing native talent.

yolofish · 18/12/2019 21:36

singing I said "Empire arrogance", harking back to the days of old. Why on earth are we, one of the richest countries in the world, not training/investing in enough of our own medical/HCP staff and instead importing them from poorer countries?

Could it be that we don't want to pay for them if we can get them cheaper from elsewhere? Same as outsourcing client services to call centres in India etc, where highly trained graduates ask you about last night's Eastenders... It's completely wrong, but down to short termism IMHO.

And for those who voted Leave to cut down on immigration, it all seems a funny way to go about it.

Immigration wasn't an issue for me, as I explained earlier in the thread.

I think we can invest in people here and still be able to welcome immigrants. The two are not mutually exclusive.

DustyDiamond · 18/12/2019 21:46

"The world order of tomorrow … is a world order based on empires,”

Guy Verhofstadt, September 2019

(For clarity, the Cambridge Dictionary screenshot was a photoshop - it doesn't really have

the European Union

as an example...
But it probably should 🤷🏻‍♀️

OP posts:
Songsofexperience · 18/12/2019 21:55

dusty the Cambridge dictionary mentions the Holy Roman Empire but not the European Union.
The EU is a partnership of 28 (soon 27 equals). You might criticise the EU commission but it's most definitely not an empire.

Even so, assuming Verhofstadt's quote was correct dusty, is being isolated a good idea? The context in which this was said alludes to the rise of authoritarian powers like China. The EU is meant to defend humanist ideals (I know you don't believe that).

Songsofexperience · 18/12/2019 21:56

Sorry, cross post!

Songsofexperience · 18/12/2019 21:56

My second point still stands.

yolofish · 18/12/2019 22:01

I'm with songs on this re her second point - what is the advantage to the UK of standing alone, being a little tiny island with hard borders to our nearest neighbours? I am truly worried about No Deal, because Kent is already pretty much at a standstill on its motorways most days even pre-brexit. And Dover, as I believe Dominic Raab had to learn/admit, is a pretty major port in terms of our food supply/JIT chain. I would love to hear it's all going to be tickety boo btw!!

AuldAlliance · 18/12/2019 22:02

Dusty, your Cambridge dictionary C&P is a fake.
Unhelpful in the circumstances.

AuldAlliance · 18/12/2019 22:08

Or else even the Cambridge dictionary uses algorithms to give its users the product they want.

I think the EU was of its time in the late 20th Century

If it hadn't been for the rapid & massive technological advances that were made in the latter part of the century/beginning of this century then the EU would have def had a longer shelf life

The new globalised world is a different beast to that of the 20th century & large unwieldy blocs such as the EU are not well equipped to navigate the new terrain

Rather than a hyper-globalised world, or large protectionist blocs - to survive & thrive going forwards, it makes much more sense to be a dynamic, autonomous nation state working in collaboration with others

One size does not fit all & does not lend itself to the prosperity of all component parts in a large bloc

Dusty, if you mean that I'm not the first person to point out your definition was not, despite your affirmations to the contrary, taken from the Cambridge Dictionary, it's just that it took MN that long to upload my screenshot via my dodgy broadband.
I'm not excited, believe me.
I am, though, curious as to the perceived validity of using a faked dictionary definition in order to back up an argument.

RaiseaGlasstoFreedom · 18/12/2019 22:22

Auld maybe dusty isn't used to arguing because we don't tend to argue in here, except when rowdy drunkards wander in trying to pick a fight...

Firstly, paragraphs can be your friend. Do not be afraid of them.

Secondly, I cannot unravel your opening sentences to comprehend the point you are trying to make. Perhaps a deep breath would help?

You were not the first person to point it out, no
That was actually me who did that 🙄

I posted a clear statement that it was a photoshop

I did not 'use a fake dictionary definition in order to back up an argument' - that is simply untrue

That said, if fake documents from reddit are good enough for Jezbollah, then a homemade photoshop is no biggie 🤷🏻‍♀️
