We can't rein in any gloating because there is no gloating to rein in. Much of this current thread, when it is discussing serious issues and not talking about posh organic carrots, laments the fact that we have all been ill-served these last 42 months because we had an government stuck in a quagmire and an ineffective Opposition.

Some friends who have made their homes and careers here from Europe now live in a country where the PM is on record as saying he doesn’t want them to feel settled.

I am sorry that your friends feel so unsettled. Please correct the record with them and remind them that Boris was one of the first to say that settled EU citizens in this country should be given immediate assurances of their right to stay. If you don't believe me, look it up.

You might also be startled to learn that Boris has also argued for a long time that illegal migrants who have been in this country a long time, and who are not criminals or terrorists, should be offered an amnesty and settled status. Don't believe me? Look it up.

I agree there is a host of misinformation around. It would help people in their everyday lives if people like you and me help to set the record straight.

And it's "rein it in", like stopping a horse. Not "reign", like the Queen.

I think there is going to have to be a sea change in Conservatism to keep those voters once we leave the EU and they realise their lives are just as shit if not worse.

Like so many Remainers you appear to have a crystal ball which only appears capable of forecasting doom and gloom for the future. We don't know what the future will bring, why don't we wait and see?

I think Leavers have been extraordinarily patient and I think they are entitled to feel happy and express that on here. I don't see it as gloating, more like relief and happiness.

I think Boris is well aware of what needs to be done.

FUS01, I was a public sector worker in the North West and watched my beloved North wither and die in the hands of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. I watched the increasing recklessness with which they bailed out Northern Rock and the Royal Bank of Scotland while the North was starved of infrastructure.

I watched as Gordon Brown introduced working tax credits - an admirable idea in itself but one of his "too clever by half" ideas that allowed the Big Five supermarkets to pay their workers minimum wage for maximum effort knowing that those workers' incomes would be topped up with taxpayers money.

It was a clever wheeze by Brown but in effect, he put billions into the supermarkets - I'm using those as an obvious example but it applies equally to any big business like Sports Direct and Amazon - by handing them taxpayers money. It was a massive con and it helped to create a dependent economy. Brown didn't care. He wanted to create a client state that would be grateful to the Labour Party. All he did was trap good people with unused potential in deadend jobs.

I am sick of seeing managed decline in the North. Time to put a stop to that and unleash the North's huge potential.

I believe that Boris is utterly serious about levelling up the country and I believe that he will open up the North again to growth and development.

Because the alternative is too depressing.

Let's go back to this, as reported by Channel 4:

Dapplegrey, I saw encouraging discussion on other threads - what I called green shoots - and made the classic mistake of thinking that I could do the same.

Epic is right - and she has much longer experience of this. We only get the goady ones.
