As ever, all are welcome - only one rule:

DON'T BE A TWAT!!

Note: I am a shit host, and not a patch on previous Landladies - I don't cook, I don't clean & I don't prepare drinks. I am a selfish bellend. If you want feeding, there's a microwave in back & a shop down the road. If you want drinks just help yourself 😘 - it's a free bar 🎉🥳🎈

pumper you are looking more than a little foolish

Remain lost

The Tories have a majority and a mandate to leave the EU

Grow up and accept that

XingMing · 15/12/2019 18:28

Lots of George Orwell's essays on Socialism and the British being quoted in the Sunday Times today. Mostly along the lines that the blue collar worker may not be eddicated, but is far from stupid. And is deeply patriotic, so hugely unlikely to follow a party leader whose first principle is to support any post-colonialist with a grudge to settle.

More seriously, there were lots of stats on investment spending plans, which boil down to previous governments having spent 3x or 4x as much per capita in London and the Southeast as in any other region. In rail transport alone, there are two planned schemes in the works for about £60bn spend in the SE; and £70bn is needed in the North to link Sheffield, Manchester, Hull, Leeds and Bradford. If Boris's shake up alters that, it will change a lot. Here in the SW education spending per capita is about half of what's spent in Tower Hamlets. I understand that Tower Hamlets is not wealthy, but nor are our rural and coastal margins: one has been granted more money and is seeing good results, and now it's time to share the spend more widely. They have proved the idea works; now roll it out and share it for the benefit of all.

I didn't ever think I'd be applauding Boris, but I am quietly hopeful he will put good people into the right jobs and leave them to get on with what needs doing.

howabout · 15/12/2019 18:29

Top post Autumn. Trust ET's lawyer DH and her lawyerly self and also her dear comrade lawyerly Sir Keir will advise - when you make comments about white van man out in the open yourself, you're somewhat limited in your plausible deniability options. Grin Grin Grin

Jo Magham's always up for a challenge though - I'm sure he would even volunteer to manage the crowdfunder all the way to the Supreme Court.

conjunctionjunction · 15/12/2019 18:37

I dance for no one on demand - I'm not some $2 lap dancer

Are you sure (waves shiny £2 coin surprisingly drunkenly for a teetotaller)? There’s more where that came from. It’s not for me – my lap is already occupied by this laptop – it’s for my friend, the one with the eyebrows that make him always look surprised. Don’t worry, he’s harmless, though he does rather go on about bicameralism once he’s got a few pints in him. C’mon, it’ll be fun.

Fair’s fair, I’ll do a poll dance afterwards (looks around for one, but finds only poles and newly unemployed pols; wonders if someone has slipped vodka in drink).

nobody has shared any tangible benefit

I saw a tangible benefit in the toilet stall. Somebody had writen (starting to slur words now) “for a good time call Pumperthethumper. I may have been in the wrongg doilet, there was a fish on one door ana bicycle on the other, I have no idea what that meant.

(Reads XingMing’s post. Sobers up immediately.) Quietly hopeful here too.

howabout · 15/12/2019 18:38

Xing it is ridiculous that London has so much disproportionate education spending. They have the luxury of economies of scale because the population is densely clustered and access to by far the best free publicly available resources in the country. The contrast with Scotland is stark. We spend far more per head in rural areas because some of the schools outside the central belt are necessarily tiny and access to community resources is limited.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 15/12/2019 18:39

“Of course not! I have a huge amount of interest in this thread because, as I said, I’ve only been pro-Brexit since yesterday. And this is a pro-Brexit thread!”

What was your reason for visiting before that then? Or... am I confusing you with someone else... 🤔

SilverySurfer · 15/12/2019 18:40

Hi, I used to come to The Arms regularly until it was taken over by Remainers. It's so nice to see it has changed.

I bought a bottle of Tattinger, £10 off in Tesco for Christmas Lunch but think the result is worth celebrating. Can I top up anyone's glass?

I look forward to chatting here as I am sick of defending my vote to leftie luvvies who seem to have lost all sense of reason and spend their day hysterically calling us vile names and talking absolute rubbish. I've never known anything like it. It seems far worse than it used to be.

Anyway, cheers Smile

howabout · 15/12/2019 18:41

Tattinger is my favourite. Trip to Tesco on my list for tomorrow. Smile

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 15/12/2019 18:44

Hey Silvery! Nice to see you back!

I’ll take a Tattinger please 🥂 , I’m still feeling jovial, in fact, my joviality level goes up with each delightful ‘new’ ‘genuine question’ visitor that appears.

SilverySurfer · 15/12/2019 18:53

Actually howabout I just checked and it's £7 off until the 18th.

Fills up glasses. Oh yes, 'genuine questions' are a hoot.

HateIsNotGood · 15/12/2019 18:56

H and I have conjured up a third chair for you by the fire Silvery - it's relaxing in here; a round of Raki all round, to welcome back Silvery.

Super nice snacks are always available, as well as blankets for the snoozers and strong coffee for the early openers.

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 15/12/2019 18:56

Hi Silvery 😊🍷

DustyDiamond · 15/12/2019 18:59

it was only a matter of time before this happened.....the shock is wearing off so now we’re getting the anger.

  1. Denial
  2. Anger
  3. Bargaining

  5. Acceptance

We finally reached stage 4 for Brexit yesterday 🙌

Currently on stage 2 for Tory Triumph

Expecting stage 3 until end Jan, then on 1st Feb when we move to transition phase stage 4 will begin.

Stage 5 will not occur for some time I fear 😟

Always up for a glass of fizz Silvery🍾😊

DustyDiamond · 15/12/2019 19:04

Although I still haven’t seen a single pro-Brexit benefit that we’ll be getting in February.

At some point you will read & comprehend:

We are not here to do your bidding

You may be used to people asking 'from what bridge' when you demand they jump, but you do not have any power here 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nobody here cares bro 🙄

Go enjoy your shiny thread

RaiseaGlasstoFreedom · 15/12/2019 19:04

Welcome silvery.
Thankfully the tide turned in the arms some threads back.
I'd love some champagne please.
Actually I prefer prosecco but I'll have a celebration glass with you.

We are mostly still stunned in the arms, in a good way, feeling utterly elated and joyful and vindicated.

Welcome. 🍾🍾😍😍🎶🎶🍸🍸 And no "🥒🥒🥒

DustyDiamond · 15/12/2019 19:09

Hi Silvery! 👋🍷

Welcome Back!!!

Always a pleasure to be rejoined by Arms veterans 😍😍😍

HateIsNotGood · 15/12/2019 19:16

Dusty here's a tankard of Tattingers - Silvery brought s'veral crates with her. However the Russians or Trump or Facebook or Twatter may have cloud-funded our need for champagne, logs, chairs, snacks and ....

BovaryX · 15/12/2019 19:27

England is perhaps the only country whose intellectuals are ashamed of their nationality. In left wing circles it is always felt that there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman George Orwell

Thought you might appreciate this quote from George Orwell..,

Bearbehind · 15/12/2019 19:28

I'd love some champagne please. Actually I prefer prosecco

Me too!

Common as muck! 😂😂😂

BovaryX · 15/12/2019 19:29

Caroline Flint took aim at Labour’s Remainers

In the pursuit of Remain, a number of people who have been ardent Remainers in our party, on our front bench, people like Keir Starmer, people like Emily Thornberry, but many others, Hillary Benn, Yvette Cooper, they have contributed to sacrificing 59 seats. But don’t worry. We’ve got Putney and Canterbury

XingMing · 15/12/2019 19:30

... a sauna, followed by a roll in fresh-fallen snow and a quick drubbing with birch branches. Apparently popularly in Scandinavia. [joke]

MarySidney · 15/12/2019 19:36

leftie luvvies who seem to have lost all sense of reason and spend their day hysterically calling us vile names and talking absolute rubbish. I've never known anything like it. It seems far worse than it used to be.

I recalled earlier how Dennis Skinner helped to give Margaret Thatcher a good send-off at her last PMQs. Politically, they were about as far apart as it was possible to be, but he behaved with respect and consideration towards her.

But then by no stretch of the imagination could the Beast of Bolsover be described as a luvvie!

DustyDiamond · 15/12/2019 19:53

Hola 🐻 👋
Welcome home 😍😂

On Dennis Skinner - I'm actually quite sad that he went out as he did - I'm happy the seat flipped to blue but would have preferred if he'd retired rather than be ousted.

Hope he has a long & contented retirement 😊😊

I think I might snaffle a stash of Prosecco and hibernate until next year! 😂
