The Brexit Arms. Is this Ben Elton? Is it free mulled wine and mince pies for everyone or a Corb-free Christmas 🎄?

Welcome to the Brexit Arms!

The temporary Landlady is back but worry not, all is festive good cheer with just another three days to go until we reach the Only Poll That Really Matters. Till then, the gloves are still on!

A quick recap of the events of the last week or so:

📋❓💙❤️💛⁉️💙‼️🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️😀☹️😀☹️😧😱🙄😬🤥🤔🤕🗳

Anyone of any political persuasion who is prepared to join in, eschew goadery, and enjoy a laugh, welcome. First drinks are on the house.

“Who says crime doesn't pay? I've made a living out of it for years.”

😂

Did I tell you about the time I locked up a woman in Liverpool for shoplifting?

She shoplifted a three piece suite.

Walked into a furniture store, dressed up to the nines, accompanied by two male accomplices dressed in brown overalls.

"This one, madam?" they said, pointing to a particularly expensive suite.
"Yes", she said.

So they picked it up and carried it out.

Everyone thought she was a genuine customer and they were genuine shop staff.

Am I cheering you up yet? Grin

Can I ask a question about postal voting...to what extent do the parties know how the postal votes have gone at this point? Are they already counted somewhere and shared with them?

Hollycatberry · 11/12/2019 15:08

Yes, that crack head violent crim, is such a paragon of virtue, let’s base our opinion around his

Imagine taking political advice from Pete Doherty 😂😂😂 he hasn't been relevant for a very long time!

SingingLily · 11/12/2019 15:10

I can answer that one.

The sealed postal votes are opened and counted in the presence of a representative of each one of the political parties (as evidence of the integrity of the process).

The vast majority of postal votes will already be in and counted.

The parties know how many postal votes they already have in each constituency.

Just prior to the EU referendum, I read an article (can't remember where) in which an "unnamed Cabinet minister" was quoted as saying "The postal votes are in and the results are horrendous".

Given that the then-government was backing Remain, the unnamed minister could only have been referring to the volume of Leave votes. That knowledge tided me over till the early hours of 24 June 2016.

That's what I believe Jonathan Ashworth might have been referring to when he said something about the national sites being dire and abysmal.

So the parties already know how well/badly they've done in the postal votes already? I assumed they were all counted together. Every day's a schoolday!

Limer · 11/12/2019 15:25

Lily that was my interpretation of the Ashworth conversation too.

Cheered myself up by watching the last 4 episodes of Gogglebox, they watch various political debates, amongst other things. Grin

It's as if the whole country's on pause, waiting for the result, before they know what to do next.

Hollycatberry · 11/12/2019 15:28

I didn't know that about postal votes either. Very interesting that the parties will already have an idea how its looking.

DustyDiamond · 11/12/2019 15:28

I am worried for users of the East Lancs Road: 147 years of work? Did it take so long to build? Are the Romans still hard at it?

Proper lol'd at that 😂😂

DustyDiamond · 11/12/2019 15:30

Feeling like this is the only thread where I have friends at the minute!

Solidarity Comrade! ✊🥀🙏🕯

We have skin like 🦏 here 😍😍

Saucery · 11/12/2019 15:34

If I see one more sanctimonious piece of drippy shite patronising anyone not bowing at the feet of St Jeremy I am going to........ well, probably just turn off social media tbh.
It’s another world on here and FB. People just don’t act and talk like that in rl and if they did you’d not hang around with them for long. And I say that as someone whose immediate family will be voting for all the main candidates overall, maybe a decent Independent in some areas.
Grow the fuck up and turn off Jonathan Pie, it’s not doing you any good you impressionable twats.

DustyDiamond · 11/12/2019 15:34

So the parties already know how well/badly they've done in the postal votes already? I assumed they were all counted together. Every day's a schoolday!

Me too!!

That puts a whole new spin on Ashworth for me!!!

Twattage13 · 11/12/2019 15:35

That's v interesting re the postal votes.

My take on the John Ashworth stuff is that I feel as a PR person he may have recorded that piece deliberately. If you listen to all 11 minutes it does not sound like a chat, it sounds like a structured interview with pre-prepared questions.

It wouldn't surprise me if he was fully aware it was going to go out because he doesn't want Corbyn to get in but he can't come out and say so directly. Especially bearing in mind we know he is not a Corbyn fan as he admits himself.

I may of course be entirely incorrect but I smell a strongish rat.

A Jewish Doctor.

First tweet...

“I am a Jewish Doctor. I look after your children, your family.

I reassure you, treat you & comfort you in times of both illness and stress.

I have children as well, 3 of them.

Every @UKLabour voter condoning antisemitism has betrayed them and my family.

#NeverCorbyn”

Sad
DustyDiamond · 11/12/2019 15:38

I've liked Jon Ashworth for a while now - after watching him talking about growing up with an alcoholic dad & his relationship with him as an adult (think he was promoting a policy in this specific area, can't remember now) - he was so genuine but measured & not wrapped up in hyperbole.

I've a lot of time for him

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 11/12/2019 15:41

Mostly supporting tweets but also plenty of ‘whataboutery”

. (I hate that whataboutery term btw, but I heard it first on MN, and have seen it deployed many times around the place, so it seems strangely apt to use it!)

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 11/12/2019 15:45

“I've liked Jon Ashworth for a while now”

I think he has pulled a blinder, this is him, knowing how shit corbyn and the rest of them are, he doesn’t want him to win, and he has thrown him under the bus at the last minute, in an attempt to be seen to have ‘known’ how bad he was and get a shot at leadership, when the house of cards has fallen, risky move, but very canny.

It could be, he also knew he was up for the chop in the event of a Corbyn win too.

Maybe, I’m just cynical, but has anyone else mused at the same? Seems odd that he would say all of this to a tory activist, so close to the event. Despite them being ‘friends’. He just seems too intelligent for that...

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 11/12/2019 15:47

He doesn’t seem that embarrassed or shocked by it does he? Lots of 🤷‍♂️ and it’s just ‘bantz’ comments...

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 11/12/2019 15:47

I’m not being tin foil hatty either 😬😂, it just seems like a classic power play to me...

Limer · 11/12/2019 15:48

I'm nodding along with that theory Epic

I think there's going to be a lot of interesting stuff come out in the wash post-election, from all sides.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 11/12/2019 15:48

“My take on the John Ashworth stuff is that I feel as a PR person he may have recorded that piece deliberately. If you listen to all 11 minutes it does not sound like a chat, it sounds like a structured interview with pre-prepared questions.”

Lol! Completely missed this!!! 😂😂😂

Twattage wins! 😂

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 11/12/2019 15:51

“Grow the fuck up and turn off Jonathan Pie, it’s not doing you any good you impressionable twats.”

I used to like PIE, he was a good all round commentator and funny with his faux rage pieces on the whole shitshow. Now he is infested with real rage and personal politics, it’s all just gone to his head.

No thanks PIE. You can keep that shit.

ajandjjmum · 11/12/2019 15:52

There was nothing in his tone that suggested it was 'bantz' - seemed a very serious conversation to me.

Twattage13 · 11/12/2019 15:52

Merci epic - I am pleased to see I'm not the only person that thinks this. If he has indeed seen the postal voting he'll just be thinking to put another nail in the Corbyn coffin to be sure they lose as big as possible. Let's bloody well hope we are correct on this!

Now I feel like a conspiracy theorist - however this is what political spinning is all about (I don't do it but I know all about it).

And yes why would he be having such a detailed conversation with a Tory activist at such a delicate time - it makes no sense on face value.
