Westminsterenders: Talent or Colour

FishesaPlenty · 06/12/2019 16:49

RTB and BCF are presumably busy with more important things. I'm clearly not qualified to start a Westminsterenders thread - but somebody has to take control and collect the waifs and strays.

The party of no talent want to introduce no colour into our lives.

6 days to the election.

Johnson is still a liar.

Corbyn is still apparently loved by Labour members and hated by everyone else.

Swinson is still a charming PTA chair.

Hester it was from the BBC. Also the world economic forum has figures.

My point was that the whole lot of them : our German/ Turkish/ Indian family prime minister, plus the Tory/ERG, plus the Faragist type voters (who are being courted) are apparently still all obsessed with foreigners. Rejecting those who make their homes here.

Yet it rarely features that:

  1. Millions of Brits do the exact same thing -making their homes elsewhere and we expect them to be made welcome.
  1. Our economy was built on immigration and still needs it.

Sorry cross post with BCF

bellinisurge · 09/12/2019 12:23

The only electoral leaflet I have received so far and it's THE FUCKING BREXIT PARTY.

Just wanted to share.

DGRossetti · 09/12/2019 12:30

Just driven through a posh part of Quinton where you need to phone the other side of the road, and the only posters I saw were two for Labour on estate agency type signs in someones front garden.

dontcallmelen · 09/12/2019 12:54

It’s fucking depressing, doesn’t matter what he says or does nothing seems to make a difference, I saw a clip on the news last night about Warwickshire a chap said he voted remain, but thought Boris would be a better person for prime minister, I’m finding it really difficult not to think a Tory majority will happen, sorry for being such a misery.

Torchlightt · 09/12/2019 13:02

How people can think Corbyn is a good man in the face of this is beyond me. He's thrown the country to the wolves.

Random18 · 09/12/2019 13:08

Joe Pike from ITV has just posted part of an interview with Boris Johnson re the poor wee boy lying on a hospital floor as there were no beds.

All I can say is if you watch this video and still think this man should be PM then you are a lost cause.

PawFives · 09/12/2019 13:12

I hear you @dontcallmelen it is depressing. I’ve never understood why people vote against their own interests, but I guess if they didn’t the Tories wouldn’t still be so popular nearly 100 years after universal sufferage.

QueenOfThorns · 09/12/2019 13:14

An estimated 5.5m British people live permanently abroad – almost one in 10 of the UK population.

What does this even mean? If they’re living abroad, they’re not in the UK population!

dontcallmelen · 09/12/2019 13:19

Paws thank you, yy Random I’m baffled by it all & what’s making me really angry & depressed in equal measures is the lack of proper mature debate about the economy/austerity/ NHS & social care/brexit etc etc from the MSM I think this has what tipped me over the edge today.

lonelyplanetmum · 09/12/2019 13:22

The language about 5.5 million is taken from the BBC report.

The point is a simple one. The prime minister has said that EU migrants have been treating the "UK as if it’s part of their own country” for too long.

Yet millions and millions of people born in the U.K. have been treating other countries as their own for equally as long.

raskolnikova · 09/12/2019 13:30

EU migrants have been able to “treat the UK as if it’s part of their own country” for too long, Boris Johnson said yesterday as he reprised the core message of Vote Leave’s 2016 EU referendum campaign.

Just when I thought I couldn't hate this guy any more, he shows me it's possible.

pointythings · 09/12/2019 13:31

I don't think I have ever treated the UK as if it were part of the Netherlands. What would that even look like? I just live here, work here, pay tax here, own property here, obey the law here, speak the language here. Is that wrong? Do enlighten me, worshippers of The Great Boris

Icantreachthepretzels · 09/12/2019 13:33

It’s almost as if Boris beat an Old Labour politician for the mayoralty of one of the world’s top global cities and nothing bad happened - twice

Apart from the London Riots.
closing fire stations
buying illegal watercannons and then having to scrap them at a loss
And the whole golden bridge debacle

And that's before we even get into the Jennifer Arcuri scandal and if he was failing to declare personal relationships whilst acting in an official capacity and doling out public money.

GoodnightEverybody · 09/12/2019 13:34

What does this even mean? If they’re living abroad, they’re not in the UK population!

It means that 5.5m British citizens live permanently abroad and aren't part of the 'UK population', even though they're as 'British' as anyone.

CendrillonSings · 09/12/2019 13:36

So literally nothing of importance then? You just don’t understand the basis on which people decide to vote in elections if that’s all you’ve got.

dreichXmas · 09/12/2019 13:38

@pointythings
Are guilty of buying stroop waffles ? (Not actually sure of spelling?)

Do you use another name for Miffy?

Do you occasionally talk to someone else in a language that isn't English?

Honestly it is beyond depressing that someone who was the Mayor of one of the world's best supercities has descended into this racist drivel.

lonelyplanetmum · 09/12/2019 13:39

My DH using google translate said imagine Pedro Sánchez said:
Los inmigrantes británicos han podido "tratar a España como si fuera parte de su propio país" durante demasiado tiempo...

Icantreachthepretzels · 09/12/2019 13:47

So literally nothing of importance then? You just don’t understand the basis on which people decide to vote in elections if that’s all you’ve got.

Well, scale all that up 'not important'* stuff that up to a country and ... that's a place in a pretty fucking shocking mess isn't it?

Oh that's right - we already are.

*btw - claiming cuts to fire services and closing of fire stations 'is not important' in the very city where Grenfell happened is fucking despicable.

Stinkyeddie · 09/12/2019 13:49

Absolutely.

Tanith · 09/12/2019 13:51

The words of Nye Bevan might be just as applicable today:

"They condemned millions of first-class people to semi-starvation. Now the Tories are pouring out money in propaganda of all sorts and are hoping, by this organised sustained mass suggestion, to eradicate from our minds all memory of what we went through. But I warn you, young men and women, do not listen to what they are saying now. Do not listen to the seductions of Lord Woolton. He is a very good salesman. If you are selling shoddy stuff you have to be a good salesman. But I warn you: they have not changed or, if they have, they are slightly worse than they were."

pointythings · 09/12/2019 13:57

dreich Crown Grin oh hell yeah. I know Tesco sell stroopwafels but they aren't the same. I only buy them when I am back in Holland for a holiday. I even buy hopjes online and (gasp) support the Dutch over the English in various sporting events.

I only really speak Dutch when my aunt is visiting though - my DDs are learning Dutch but aren't fluent.

I notice that none of the usual suspects have tried to answer my question. Could that be because they have no defence against the PM's obnoxious xenophobic rants?

Here's a good one from Led by Donkeys and Dr Xand.

MaxNormal · 09/12/2019 13:59

That is rather a new low. But Johnson himself delivers new lows each day so I suppose his acolytes must follow.
