Westminsterenders: Talent or Colour

RTB and BCF are presumably busy with more important things. I'm clearly not qualified to start a Westminsterenders thread - but somebody has to take control and collect the waifs and strays.

The party of no talent want to introduce no colour into our lives.

6 days to the election.

Johnson is still a liar.

Corbyn is still apparently loved by Labour members and hated by everyone else.

Swinson is still a charming PTA chair.

my kids are going to pay for pension and disability rights they will never receive

Most of us pay for disability benefits we never receive. Two of my friends died before they got a penny of the pensions they’d paid towards for more than 40 years.

You must mean the state pension as
DB pensions all have death benefits
DC pension funds are a heritable sum
so the family still benefit

When 10% of all council tax goes towards pension contributions
(on the basis of half of council tax is staff and LGPS is 20% of that)
but 20 year olds will never get final salary pensions ....

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/12/2019 18:04

And it's all very well to say people are living longer, but among some parts of the population (mostly the poor living in some cities) life expectancy has actually fallen, not risen, during this century. As it has in America.

DGRossetti · 08/12/2019 18:10

Is the scam where you are forced to buy an annuity with your pension still going ? Where the annuity disappears the moment the person holding it dies ?

I recall a few "Watchdog" type progs in the 80s about women who had nothing after their partners died after getting an annuity ...

ListeningQuietly · 08/12/2019 18:16

DGR
Thank goodness compulsory annuities are gone
A family member bought £400,000 annuity and died 27 days later
they never paid out a single penny Sad

MaxNormal · 08/12/2019 18:19

Is this an actual joke??

Westminsterenders: Talent or Colour
Ellie56 · 08/12/2019 18:25

I saw that Max. The Daily Fail gets worse with its propaganda. Hmm

Where are the articles slating Bozo the clown as the worst PM in living memory and pleading with voters to save us from the nightmare of a Tory Brexit?

MaxNormal · 08/12/2019 18:34

Surely they've completely overplayed their hand with that one? I had to check that it wasn't satire ffs!

longtimelurkerhelen · 08/12/2019 18:36

Yep, they over egged it. I expect we will see more hysterical lies "news" in the coming days.

bellinisurge · 08/12/2019 18:40

The Daily Fail was notoriously Hitler supporting .

There are now more options when it comes to taking pension benefits under 'Flexi access' and it is not necessary to buy an annuity. Having said this not all annuities are bad, some older style plans have guaranteed annuity rates that are worth considering. They can also have the option to have guaranteed spouses benefits on death. For those in doubt get some good advice from an expert.

AskingQuestions Interesting observation.

The really interesting thing, to me, was that the people who were outside large prosperous houses washing cars like Audis and BMWs all said things like "Oh, yes, I'll probably be voting Labour, let's have a look", and it was only people outside smaller, scruffier houses, with broken toys and dead cars on blocks in the garden, who told me nobody round here votes Labour, no, stuff your leaflet luv, and the like. It felt the wrong way round, somehow, though I am unsure why.

My very elderly mother sometimes reflects that when she was very young the middle classes voted Tory, and working classes voted Labour, but now it seems to her the other way round. She finds it confusing. But then, she has recently broken a lifetime habit of voting Tory and now votes LD.

MaxNormal · 08/12/2019 19:00

AskingQuestions whereabouts were you leafleting? Or you might prefer not to say but I'm curious. I can't imagine the less affluent areas around my way voting Tory but I'm in greater Glasgow.

MaxNormal · 08/12/2019 19:02

And actually thinking about it, it really pisses me off when posters (mostly in AIBU) accuse me of being in a "lefty bubble". Yes I live in a region where people tend to be a bit more left-wing but it's hardly a rarified, affluent bubble!

dreichXmas · 08/12/2019 19:13

I could easily see askingquestions voting pattern being repeated in parts of Yorkshire.

WifeofDarth · 08/12/2019 19:31

I'm in a marginal - cons in 1st, then labour then LDs. LD canvasser who knocked at our door was v supportive of us voting labour despite our LD poster in the window! Am hoping this will be enough to pay labour over the line, and that labour are being as magnanimous in the neighbouring seat where they're in third

ListeningQuietly · 08/12/2019 19:36

I've had no canvassers at all ...
Sad

Alsohuman · 08/12/2019 19:37

Nor me.

Jason118 · 08/12/2019 19:39

I'll never see one here in Loathsomeshire, it's a fivegone conclusion

Icantreachthepretzels · 08/12/2019 19:41

Channel 4 holding an 'anything but brexit' debate. The tories didn't bother to show up. They didn't even send their dad or their mate this time. They have nothing to offer that isn't 'get brexit done' - and they're not even trying to hide the fact.

Surely everyone can see the contempt they hold the electorate in now.

Alsohuman · 08/12/2019 19:45

Well to be fair, Brexit’s all they’ve got.

ListeningQuietly · 08/12/2019 19:46

Admittedly one of the leaflets I got assumed I was in the marginal seat next door postcode fail

CendrillonSings · 08/12/2019 19:59

Well to be fair, Brexit’s all they’ve got.

Oh, we’ve got a lot more than that Smile

The NI debate is on UTV now. All the party leaders except from the DUP who sent Emma Penghelly. Won't make any difference to me in a Sinn Fein safe seat.
