Westministenders: Promises, promises

BigChocFrenzy · 17/11/2019 17:46

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

Poverty is not the fault of government, says Priti Patel with a straight face. In a food bank, in Barrow, where four out of 10 children are in poverty.

Bodoni · 21/11/2019 08:13

Sorry to see this about People’s Vote - I hope Dominic Grieve can still get enough support to get elected. What a mess.

I'm so fucking angry at Priti Patel. The fucking brass neck of her!
But tories will be lapping it up Halloween Angry

I thought the Gove interview on C4 News last night was really disturbing. There's no attempt to hide the utter contempt they have for anyone other than themselves anymore.

borntobequiet · 21/11/2019 08:23

11/16 so not so sad. But I do suffer from moderate prosopagnosia, so I have difficulty with photos of faces...

QueenOfThorns · 21/11/2019 08:32

I only got 8/16, but I thought it was pretty good going Smile

Calling Corbyn a ‘terrorist sympathiser’ is just a way to prevent awkward questions

The media needs to give the Tories more and more air time.

Let them damage themselves.

I can't believe that supposedly well educated people would say the things that they d.

Any time Raab, Patel or Gove opens their mouth surely they are not winning votes. The question is how many they are losing.

Although it was suggested earlier in the campaign that the Tories were trying to throw the election........

TiddleTaddleTat · 21/11/2019 08:35

@KanelbulleKing agree, I found that Gove interview chilling. The tories are playing a very dirty campaign in a hugely arrogant way and not even trying to hide it! It's like the vote leave campaign all over again.
I did think the factcheck twitter row was just a deliberate ploy to get people on to twitter and following cchq- have they had many new followers since?

Hoooo · 21/11/2019 08:37

Straight out of trumps playbook.

It works, sadly

Unusual for Priti Patel to have a straight face. I don't think I've ever seen her not smirking.

Peregrina · 21/11/2019 09:40

I do hope karma gets Priti Ugli Patel

DGRossetti · 21/11/2019 09:56

Poverty is not the fault of government, says Priti Patel with a straight face.

To which the immediate good journalistic (and public) response is to then shit on anything she goes onto say about the economy. Because if the government isn't responsible for the bad shit, it can't be responsible for the good stuff either.

This is primary school debating FGS.

MockersFactCheckMN · 21/11/2019 09:56

The Tory tone is calculated. It's targetting the 'Sun Reader' type who will believe whatever they are told: EU wants to ban kettles, etc.

The problem is it takes the core Tory vote for granted, and those commuter-belt small-c conservatives might not like this harsher tone.

FadingStar · 21/11/2019 10:03

Patel has a heart of ice. Shame on her.

lonelyplanetmum · 21/11/2019 10:23

Patel didn't say all of what she was thinking but it seemed her premise was that a particular person's poverty isn't the government's fault. Whose fault is it- well she mentioned local ( underfunded) authorities but really doesn't she think it is down to the individual. Success or failure is dependent on their innate qualities.

It's the raw survival of the fittest.

It's " And I think if either of us were in a fire, whatever the fire brigade said, we would leave the burning building."

It's a pure right wing mindset.

I just wish they'd all come out and say it plainly. JRM back pedalled and masked it. Patel was thinking it but didn't say it.

At the end of the day she was a lobbyist for tobacco companies who thinks that nicotine or alcohol addiction is an individual's look out.

When any of this lot adopt a veneer of ' ooo we want to help people, help the NHS, state education' that I can't stand it .

I'd rather they just said look social hierarchy is inevitable and natural..even desirable?

Just bloody say as you visit the food bank that some are naturally more equal than others. If you think acute inequality is a natural result of innate difference, then say so.

Call a spade a spade then we know what we're dealing with.

Why has the
@BBCNWT
footage of Priti Patel channeling Shaggy's 'It Wasn't Me' disappeared from my Twitter?

Katharinblum · 21/11/2019 10:36

Agree lonelyplanet tory thinking has long been that when bad things happen to people it's largely due to some personal failing or inadequacy.

Ellie56 · 21/11/2019 10:40

It is disgraceful that the Mirror journalist was not allowed onto the bus along with all the others.

QueenOfThorns · 21/11/2019 10:43

This is primary school debating FGS.

Is it really? I had an entirely state-funded education, local primary and then local comprehensive. Debating was not taught at any point. OK, so I’m getting on a bit now, but I can’t imagine that this has changed in our cash-strapped schools.

Westministenders: Promises, promises
Dusty01 · 21/11/2019 10:44

Quick question - slightly off subject, but I've been trying to post on my local MP's facebook page. He deletes the message every time and then blocks me. I've set up 3 different facebook accounts - not sure if this is OK.

Anyway my posts were simply comments - nothing rude - just my experiences at local hospital. I can put what I wrote on here, if anyone wants to see it.

Is it OK for an MP to do this? As a result all critical/questioning posts are disappearing and all that remains are ones that praise him.
