Westministenders: Promises, promises

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

You aren't wrong it's daft clash and putting people off saving for their old age is generally a bad plan.

Mistigri · 20/11/2019 17:29

A Brexit activist standing against remainer MP Anna Soubry was today banned from the former Tory’s constituency in the run-up to the General Election after being convicted of harassing her.

Amy Dalla Mura, 56, is standing against Ms Soubry, now of Change UK, in the Nottinghamshire constituency of Broxtowe 200 miles from her Sussex home despite being convicted today of harassing the MP.

(She's not a BXP candidate, which is slightly disappointing - she is from one of the smaller racist parties).

Hoooo · 20/11/2019 17:29

Fucking hello DG I'll be on the 🍸 soon!!

BaloneyInMySlacks · 20/11/2019 17:29

Agree £12k NI threshold could cause problems wrt state pension entitlement.

That's based on a different threshold though. I don't think they've suggested increasing the LEL threshold by more than inflation have they?

DGRossetti · 20/11/2019 17:32

That's make campaigning ... interesting Grin.

I wonder what the hierarchy of laws is here ? Presumably criminal law trumps electoral law ?

ClashCityRocker · 20/11/2019 17:39

Baloney Good point. I can't see any detail. I hope they do keep the LEL at a similar level.

Mistigri · 20/11/2019 17:43

Presumably criminal law trumps electoral law ?

I'm sure it does. This woman is a well known nutter who also got banned from the coast for repeatedly trying and failing to drown herself.

RedToothBrush · 20/11/2019 17:45

That suspended Lib Dem candidate seems utterly, utterly thick.

What on earth the LDs were doing thinking it was a good idea to stand someone who had previously been a Ukip candidate is beyond me.

The LDs make you do a test / interview before they will approve you to be a prospective candidate too!!!!

DGRossetti · 20/11/2019 17:47

On a more practical note, is there time for the LibDems to find another candidate and submit them to whoever and get the ballots reprinted ?

Or is there a job for someone with a book of stickers and a box of ballots ?

I'm still trying to see how a UKIP candidate became accepted as a LibDem candidate ? Are they that short of contenders ?

This really isn't turning out to be the LibDems finest election.

tobee · 20/11/2019 17:53

Hunt had a huuuge majority at the last election with 55.7% of the vote. In second place was a National Health Action candidate on 20%.

But that was 2017. Only 3 candidates standing 2019.

Incidentally, UKIP came second in 2015 but only had 9.8% of the vote compared to Hunt's 59.6.

So if anyone but Hunt wins in 2019, use of the word seismic would be justified.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 20/11/2019 17:54

How many candidates have been suspended now? Two, three, more? I don't remember it as a feature of previous elections.

tobee · 20/11/2019 17:55

Hunt's constituency of South West Surrey comprises towns like Hindhead, Haslemere, Farnham and Godalming.

DGRossetti · 20/11/2019 17:55

Maybe an idea for voters too Grin

No

No

Amateurish set up and a complete and utter lack of proper oversight. From the party don't understand safeguarding.

Are they that short of contenders ?

From what I hear?
Hell yes they are short in anywhere without a good LD local party and reasonable shot of getting elected.

This really isn't turning out to be the LibDems finest election.

I'm not really surprised given how people have been told they aren't welcome in the party for understanding biology and the toxic culture of bullying that its come from.

It's kind of an inevitable consequence.

Hoooo · 20/11/2019 18:06

I met our labour candidate today.
Seems very clever, an ex gp, district councillor of many years standing.
I will be voting for her.

RedToothBrush · 20/11/2019 18:07

Ian Warren @election_data
Polite request of the pollsters out there. The 2017 voting behaviour of current 'Don't Knows'. Seems like a missing figure, and I'd guess it's not the red wave people might expect

I'd say it's slightly more Labour but there are plenty enough 2017 Tories in the Don't Knows as well. Plus, maybe they stay Don't Knows and don't vote at all. Might be the rational choice if you can't vote for ANYONE with a clear conscience

Rob Blackiee @robblackie_oo
I've been looking at the don't knows / Remain/Leave. Looks like a similar sized pool in both currently (15-20% of Yougov's sample).

ContinuityError · 20/11/2019 18:12

Is it the lower earnings threshold that is increasing for NI?

MockersFactCheckMN · 20/11/2019 18:12

This woman is a well known nutter who also got banned from the coast for repeatedly trying and failing to drown herself.

Well at least she can get herself arrested.

Ellie56 · 20/11/2019 18:13

I've never known so many candidate suspensions before a GE either.

MockersFactCheckMN · 20/11/2019 18:15

...and Dalla Mura is not what you'd call an "English" name.

Violetparis · 20/11/2019 18:20

The rise of social media is leading to many of these suspensions. I don't get why candidates don't expect their social media posts to be scrutinised or do they just forget how awful they have been on there Confused.

RedToothBrush · 20/11/2019 18:24

Going through your social media before deciding to stand, isn't a difficult concept...

sovielverloren · 20/11/2019 18:25

Not to sidetrack too much about South West Surrey, but for reasons I didn't really understand the LD candidate was not eligible in 2015 and they backed NHA candidate in 2017 so there's no recent GE history here. Yes, Hunt has a stonking majority. He was also remain, and in 2017 was still seen as on the soft side of Brexit if we have to, as far as I can tell.

In any case, I intend to do what I can to get him out which in my opinion is supporting the LD candidate.

runningintothesunset · 20/11/2019 18:28

Also, so many doctors are already making decisions to cut hours / leave the pension scheme. It needs to be sorted not fudged.

One of our friends was recently handed a tax bill greater than their annual salary. I challenge anyone to say “ok I’ll carry on working these hideous hours, rarely seeing my family and I’ll pay the government to do it” It is an absolute farce

Also, isn’t the fudge only for this year? What about from April...

MockersFactCheckMN · 20/11/2019 18:31

I don't get why candidates don't expect their social media posts to be scrutinised or do they just forget how awful they have been on there

Because they are talking to their mates on there and it never crosses their tiny minds they are being globally published.
