Westministenders: Promises, promises

BigChocFrenzy · 17/11/2019 17:46

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

Birmingham Hodge Hill candidate

Be very careful before repeating the name and what you think you know.

Very very careful.

Jason118 · 20/11/2019 16:04

Birmingham Hodge Hill.

That's one hell of a tweet.

Ellie56 · 20/11/2019 16:04

I hope Anne Milton does split the vote in Guildford. That will serve the Tories right for hypocritically turning her out of the party for doing exactly the same as they did earlier in the year.

Anybody else think the Tories should suspend the racist candidate who is standing in Uxbridge...?

DGRossetti · 20/11/2019 16:09

Anybody else think the Tories should suspend the racist candidate who is standing in Uxbridge...?

It would in keeping with "Captain Scarper" wouldn't it ?

Did anyone else read that after the debate, Boris broke the sound barrier getting the hell outta there, whilst Corbyn stayed and took questions from the audience and generally came across as a Decent Chap ?

Tanith · 20/11/2019 16:17

Surrey Tories are also worried for Jeremy Hunt in South West Surrey, judging by the hammering the Lib Dem candidate is getting from them on SM.

LouiseCollins28 · 20/11/2019 16:19

Buzzfeed seemingly has the story on the Lib Dem candidate mentioned above.

Alsohuman · 20/11/2019 16:20

I read that too. Guess he thought he’d be lynched by his MPs who were so busy trying to put a good face on his abysmal performance. Or rushed away by his minders before he could drop another gaffe.

Tanith · 20/11/2019 16:20

He already did it himself, armed with a Union Jack in each hand iirc...

Ellie56 · 20/11/2019 16:23

Yes DGR I read somewhere that as soon as the cameras stopped rolling Bozo legged it while Corbyn stayed to talk to the audience and shake hands with them.

I believe he was outside talking to the public before the programme too, while Bozo was driven in quickly ...Hmm

DGRossetti · 20/11/2019 16:25

There must be a TV programme, book deal and knitwear contract in the journey from UKIP candidate to LibDem candidate, surely ? We could call it: Damascus for all sorts of reasons.

It’s certainly interesting to follow the local Facebook community board. I do think he could be in trouble - the NHS focussed Independent did well last time and a lot has happened since then.

There are a few large hospitals close by - lots of NHS professionals live in the area.

Locally, a Labour MP was unseated by a local Doctor opposing closure of a hospital in 2001 and 2005 ....

ClashCityRocker · 20/11/2019 16:48

Posters may remember me ranting a few threads back about the doctor's pension savings tax issues that are now having a significant impact on waiting times, doctor retention and recruitment.

The tories have now decided that they are going to pay any doctors pension savings tax bills for 2019/20.

Great! It's a perverse tax anyway leading to some doctors having tax bills in excess of their actual income.

The way they are planning to do it however is also hugely cost ineffective. Basically, all doctors will make a scheme pays election, which means the fund essentially loans the money to pay the tax - then charges interest at 3% plus cpi on this amount, up to the point that they retire. At this point (ie when the doctor retires), the government will top up the fund so that it is effectively the same level it would have been if the tax didn't arise for that year.

So, for a forty year old consultant with a £20,000 pension savings tax bill, the government will fork out an additional £10k of interest - and that is assuming inflation stays at similar levels.

A poorly thought out law leads to a poorly thought out expensive fudge to try and get out of a shitty situation exasperated by the poorly thought out law. Who'da thunk it.

(Not entirely clear what part of the budget this is coming out of. NHS funds perhaps?)

Its the government. Is there any other way ?

Remember ID cards ?

Hoooo · 20/11/2019 16:56

What an absolute clusterfuck

dreichwinter · 20/11/2019 16:59

I think @ClashCityRocker that kind of scheme is what the employers of reasonable earners with decent pensions have sorted out outside of the NHS.
They are faffy schemes but they don't fall foul of HMRC.

ListeningQuietly · 20/11/2019 17:01

ClashCity
The whole of the pension limit changes was done badly
fuck business
as were the Dividend tax changes
fuck business

and frankly the proposed NI changes are regressive as they will again narrow the tax base rather than widening it
which is bad for accountability and transparency.

Gordon Brown's 10% tax rate was one of the few things he got really right

Alsohuman · 20/11/2019 17:05

The NI changes could mean a whole tranche of the poorest paid find themselves without the requisite 35 years contributions for a state pension. Unintended consequence or more Tory face grinding?

SwedishEdith · 20/11/2019 17:06

That suspended Lib Dem candidate seems utterly, utterly thick.

Oh yes.
Its been well known that the reason NI is not cumulative
ie does add up across jobs and months
is to exclude the low paid and part time workers from state pension rights

wait till rights to health care are based on adult contributions Angry

ClashCityRocker · 20/11/2019 17:18

Yep, dreichwinter I've seen that. There's quite a few who've negotiated a higher salary in exchange for less pension contributions too.

The problem with the nhs pension is doctors have so little control over it and, in the case of GPs, the growth cannot be ascertained until over a year after the tax year end, which makes financial planning near on impossible. It's such a stupid way of doing things.

I wouldn't mind but when the government were consulting on this, we did point it out.... 🙄

Agree £12k NI threshold could cause problems wrt state pension entitlement.

DGRossetti · 20/11/2019 17:22

Wait until the right to life is based on being Tory.
