Yes - one of the less-favoured parts of the SW here too, but not enough apparently. By the time I could afford to buy somewhere I was completely priced out of the Countryside and Coast. Although eligible for Shared Ownership, the very few available were so ovepriced for what they really were that I bought a cheapish old house in a Town.

I am so surprised that the house next door is a second home, and it's not the only one and one or 2 are holiday rentals.

I am

XingMing · 14/11/2019 21:14

I am, in human terms, stating why the SW voted Leave in such numbers. So many people have retired to their holiday dreams, and discovered that it was the thinnest veneer of welcome, based on spend, and that they really are not wanted here. Yet we also have lots of Polish and Rumanian people coming in to do the jobs we need doing, and being resented for being here and being furrin. Once holiday times are over, I think the SW prefers to be the SW. Yet resents the poverty too.

Saucery · 14/11/2019 21:16

That’s the thing, you can get a mortgage for 250,000 new build on a flood plain estate but not for a 100,000 perfectly well-built older terrace that’s probably nearer where you work/shops etc under those crappy schemes.
Your local council gets the kickback from the rapacious developers and you get a huge mortgage and a soulless house with a postage stamp garden that oh look, has flooded/ needs a car to get anywhere, what a surprise!

DustyDiamond · 14/11/2019 21:17

Remember that first blast of Blair, and oasis etc... Alexander mcqueen, British fashion, Kate moss... Design... Industry... Excitement... Right old commoner wife from the pool.. Like us...

It all felt so exciting in '97!!

I remember dancing round in the bop singing 'things can only get better' 😳😂

I loved the 90s & Blair getting elected seemed to capture the spirit of the time - young, dynamic, vision & energy (...for an MP 😂)

Apparently, cleaning an excellent toilet hasn't yet made it into the Artisanal Top 10.

Lol Hate 😂
I'd make an excellent artisanal toilet cleaner!
Used to clean a pub at weekends when I was still at school - I have skillz in this arena!

I agree about the right to choose your own passing, VeryGenuine - I understand & appreciate the arguments against but I'd like to have control over my end I think.

Another pint please LL. Is it a serve yourself thing tonight? if so, you'll find my money in the dish behind the bar

I'm afraid it's going to be predominantly a self serve bar for the time being patrons 😳

I'm popping in & out but I've been v busy and am utterly knackered.
I've worked since I was at school but after having the last 4 years out of the routine of getting up & having to do stuff, I'm absolutely done in 😳😳

I've been going to bed before 9 every night this week which is most unlike me 😩

Proper late on tonight - quarter past nine!! 😂😂😂

Solidarity to all as ever!
✊🌹🙏🕯

If I am totally honest, although I came here 35 years ago (to be with DH) I am more Islington than C*ington.

ArseDarkly · 14/11/2019 21:19

Mid-post name change? Confused

HateIsNotGood · 14/11/2019 21:20

Ta for the drink Xing - you raise a lot of interesting points. I shall have to ponder on them for awhile - I've just thrown a log on the fire so shall watch it burn whilst I think.

XingMing · 14/11/2019 21:21

No name change here, Arse

That might have been an accidental cross post ArseDarkly. Nothing sinister here.

HateIsNotGood · 14/11/2019 21:29

Hi Dusty - thanks for keeping the Pub open so we can all pop in for a friendly pint or drink of choice and either leave the money behind the bar or on our slate.

Most of us I think, don't really have anything new Brexity to Say, we're just in a 'holding pattern' until the GE.

But it's nice to pop in and have a pint and a warm by the fire in good company.

XingMing · 14/11/2019 21:32

@ArseDarkly. I see how that could be read, but it wasn't posted like that.

HateIsNotGood · 14/11/2019 21:33

I Am HateIsNotGood Arse - I Am. Are you questioning anything about me? Happy to put your 'mind' at rest if you might think otherwise.

ContinuityError · 14/11/2019 21:33

So what happened to the 200,000 starter homes promised by the Conservative Government?

Oh, didn’t happen.

ArseDarkly · 14/11/2019 21:35

But...it exactly matches the post above?

I am so surprised that the house next door is a second home, and it's not the only one and one or 2 are holiday rentals.

I am ...

...I am, in human terms, stating why the SW voted Leave in such numbers. So many people have retired to their holiday dreams, and discovered that it was the thinnest veneer of welcome, based on spend, and that they really are not wanted here.

See what I mean? Anyway, like I say, none of my business. I'll be off.

SingingLily · 14/11/2019 21:36

In that case, doubles all round - my shout - and half a dozen bags of crisps plus a comforting cocoa for the Landlady who's yawning her head off Smile

We just people, after all, and we are entitled to a night off and a time for reflection. 🍷

larry55 · 14/11/2019 21:39

I have to admit that we are incomers to the SW as we retired here but we hope that we have added help to the area with our voluntary work in such things as Scouts, Church and Dh is governor of a local school.

I have been following the Brexit Arms for some time and have been glad to read about others who want Brexit.

XingMing · 14/11/2019 21:39

4,000 are being built close to here Continuity. There aren't many jobs though, and fewer at better than NMW, so they are being leased by councils outside the area to house anyone who will move.

Bearbehind · 14/11/2019 21:40

Those 2 posts by different user names are very peculiar.

They do appear to have been from 1 person as they continue the same story.

Very odd

XingMing · 14/11/2019 21:44

Like-minded, but not the same.

Bearbehind · 14/11/2019 21:47

But the second post reinforced the first, both using ‘I’ - they weren’t written as if they were different people with the same view.

I’ve never understood the point of sock puppetry and don’t now.

HateIsNotGood · 14/11/2019 21:47

Sorry Arse I don't see what you mean. Just 2 posters who don't know each other at all who happen to live in the quite large Region of the UK called SW England.

Whilst places like Swindon and Bristol are included in that Region you could say they hardly share the same 'day to day' experience as those in Devon and Cornwall. Same as you could specifically identify Exeter, Plymouth and St Ives as being all different too. And there's many more demarcations too.

Really, nothing 'sinister' to read into what the 'regulars' here post, so as you know you like it here really, pull up a chair by the fire and have a drink - on my slate.

DustyDiamond · 14/11/2019 21:50

🙄

Tinfoil hats off....

The 'I am' was the same para start as the one immediately prior:

"I am^ so surprised that the house next door is a second home, and it's not the only one and one or 2 are holiday rentals.
^^
^I am"

Something I've done many a time when posting - starting the para then scrolling back & restarting, forgetting I've already started it & left with a random couple of words.

No need for troll hunting on these threads - if you've a problem Arse then report to MN, no need for smartarse 'observations' 🙄

Stop hyper-analysing guys. We are two separate posters, possibly with similar opinions. No more than that. Not chat bots.

I have been following the Brexit Arms for some time and have been glad to read about others who want Brexit.

🍷

There's loads of us around!

Most are quiet on MN though.... 😉
