New thread.

General election 12th December 2019. Results out on Friday 13th. Unlucky day for some.

So this election is unusual in that it will focus primarily on Brexit and referendums with domestic issues tagged alongside, for some parties.

I’ll definitely be throwing an all nighter on 12/13. I always do on election night.

ArseDarkly · 03/11/2019 18:25

I haven't got 13th off but if it's a bad result I'll be crushed anyway so lack of sleep won't make any difference and if it's good i'll be too euphoric to care!

A Conservative general election candidate in a key marginal seat wrote on social media that she believed people on the reality TV show Benefitss^ Street needed “putting down”.

Lovely.

I'll be in the U.K. that week but doing strategy day presentations on 12th and 13th so will officially be ignoring the election. Definitely no all nighters for me. I'm having dinner with Japanese colleagues on the 12th so we won't be talking about the election, since most of them think the U.K. has gone mad but are too polite to say so.

Bit tetchy tonight. Better to talk about the issues without being personal? It's going to get yet more stressful and we already need the sticking plaster tobee!

This week's events... not sure if Parliament is closing on Tuesday?

Speaker election tomorrow: 9 candidates according to the Mirror, although to my mind several of them stand no chance. Wonder what Bercow will do next? Too young to retire.

Tory candidate wrote people on Benefits Street should be 'put down'

Shocking that this person could be a Tory MP from 13 December Sad

placemats · 03/11/2019 18:46

Just spoken to my mum and brother in Northern Ireland. They will be voting Alliance in the hope of getting the incumbent DUP MP out. It will be a first for them both in the GE.

Sounds promising, Placemats
Let's hope the NI Alliance party, who are non-sectarian, do really well this GE

Fireworks aplenty here (Diwali + No ember 5th = fireworks ahoy!!).

Trying to tell myself it's a reminder we all carry within us the ability to make light even as we head into the deepest dark.

❤️ to all who come to these threads with well-intended hearts and words.

Why is this vile woman even being allowed to stand?

GingerPCatt · 03/11/2019 19:00

It’s all to play for and we have a long way to go!

Floaters don't just move from Lab to Con, they may be Lab to LD or LD to Con or Lab. And if opinion poll switching surveys are to be believed, switching often defies right-left categorisation.

I’d agree with that. I’m speaking as someone who has voted for 4 different parties (Conservative, Green, Labour, Lib Dem - not in that order) across 7 General Elections and 5 different parliamentary constituencies.

It's my birthday soon Ginger. Where did you get that T Shirt? I love it!

Probably a requirement for the NuCons

I winced when I saw that headline. I misread it as them saying she should be put down and thought it showed the toxicity in politics. Then I re-read and realised nope, she's the toxicity in politics.

tobee · 03/11/2019 19:15

I'll probably be staying up all night too! Unusually going for a weeks holiday to Cornwall on the Saturday!

Dd and I stayed up in 2017! That was an unexpectedly bizarre even. Remember Dd and I going completely hysterical laughing when Elmo's results were announced. Grin

bellinisurge · 03/11/2019 19:22

Really hope the Alliance Party do well in NI. Everything crossed. That would be such a good news story in all this horribleness.

Dusty01 · 03/11/2019 19:28

Is this true?

Dusty01 · 03/11/2019 19:30

I wonder if the Telegraph is just trying to frighten Tory voters, to get them out voting?

Alsohuman · 03/11/2019 19:35

Any poll now is meaningless. We’ve got six weeks with a volatile electorate to get through.

Icantreachthepretzels · 03/11/2019 19:37

The night of the 2017 election was when I started following these threads in earnest.

I'd gone to bed but I woke up early hours and just felt sick with worry so got back up to watch. I'd heard the promising exit polls - but I remembered all too clearly the promising exit polls I went to bed with on 23.6.16...

I hope I'll be able to stay up (supply teacher- don't know whether I'll be working or not) because I'm now superstitious about sleeping through election night.
