New thread.

General election 12th December 2019. Results out on Friday 13th. Unlucky day for some.

So this election is unusual in that it will focus primarily on Brexit and referendums with domestic issues tagged alongside, for some parties.

Dominic Grieve has just joined Twitter, probably to help with his campaign. I have a feeling he might have a loyal following in Beaconsfield. It'd feel just for him to retain the seat.

iirc, nominations for seats must be in by 24 November

So BJ has until then to find a safe seat, away from the Brunel Uni students

He either has to find a safe seat where the MP is retiring and a candidate hasn't yet been selected,
or offer a peerage to a sitting MP

In each case, the local party might be pissed at not being allowed to choose their candidate

  • so he has to find a safe seat where the local party like him a lot

Apparently Extinction Rebellion are on a mission to oust Johnson too.

Christchurch would work for BJ. Chope is gone and they’d vote for anything with a blue rosette...

DustyDiamond · 03/11/2019 22:34

I'm not a big fan of Independence, but if I were Scottish that arbitrary refusal would put my back up

I'm Scottish

It's a daft mistake to make to think Scots are an homogeneous blob or of a hive mind

Plenty in Scotland hate Sturgeon, hate the SNP & hate the incessant independence bollocks

Icantreachthepretzels · 03/11/2019 22:38

Some seats likely to change hands:
Stuart Andrew a minister for Defence has a majority of 331.

Don't even get my hopes up!
Though Yorkshire for Europe has marked him down as one to target and according to the stats the Pudsey constituency has more under 50s living in it than over 50s, I don't yet dare to dream.

Thanks Placemats PMK after a lengthy absence.

Dominic Grieve: ‘What Number 10 has said is not true. It’s a lie’

So the same PM who thinks Parliament should pass the WA in a matter of days needs six weeks to read a report? Hmm

Think I've still got the carpet burns scars from my celebratory slide when Portillo lost. Tobee , I was sitting on the floor in front of the fire when that result came in. Jumped spontaneously up and crashed back down on to the edge of the hearth. Had a bruise the size of Jacob Rees Mogg’s House on my left buttock for months Grin

Ross Thomson: Tory MP accused of groping Labour MP to step down at general election

Well, this Tory MP will be no loss.
Sounds like another SNP gain !
I'm glad the Labour MP had the sense not to punch him - no need for violence and it wouldn't have ended well

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/ross-thomson-quits-tory-mp-groping-general-election-paul-sweeney-boris-johnson-a9183276.html?utmsource=taboola&utmm_medium=Feed

Conservative MP Ross Thomson has announced he will not stand in the general election, amid an allegation he groped a Labour MP in a Westminster bar last year.

Mr Thomson, who denies the claim, said he would “continue to fight to clear my name”, but would not stand as a candidate for Aberdeen South at December’s general election.

Paul Sweeney told the Scottish Mail on Sunday the Tory MP had grabbed at him in the Strangers’ bar in the House of Commons in October 2018,
and then tried to put his hands down the front of his trousers.

“I felt paralysed. It was just such a shocking thing.
I was in a cold sweat, it was mortifying,”
the Labour MP for Glasgow North East said.

He added:
“In the back of my mind, I was thinking that if I just punched the guy, who knows where that could end up
when there’s a bar full of journalists.
I couldn’t fight, so I took flight.”

"It's a daft mistake to make to think Scots are an homogeneous blob or of a hive mind"

Nothing to do with assuming most Scots want independence,
just assuming most Scots would be offended by a UK PM being so arrogant and dismissive

BigChocFrenzy · 03/11/2019 22:59

"Plenty in Scotland hate Sturgeon, hate the SNP & hate the incessant independence bollocks"

Do the SNP hate all the Unionists that much ?

DustyDiamond · 03/11/2019 23:04

just assuming most Scots would be offended by a UK PM being so arrogant and dismissive

An alternative viewpoint being 'thank fuck he's standing up to wee Nippy'

Do the SNP hate all the Unionists that much ?

Maybe not the SNP, but many independence advocates do, yes.

dreichwinter · 03/11/2019 23:13

My family has a very committed Labour unionist on one side, a dedicated SNP follower on the other and a load of unconvinced in the middle.
Everyone talks to each other.
But I think there had been more risk of bad feeling from SNP followers, at least in the past. It is hard to manage Nationalism safely.
NS is doing a good job of pushing a Scotland for all agenda.
( I think the wee nippy stuff is total sexist tripe, as was the no dc stuff)

BigChocFrenzy · 03/11/2019 23:48

Yep, "wee nippy" always sounds sexist to me too
She seems to get a lot of personal flak from Unionists

I wasn't keen, but warmed to her the day after the ref, when she said that the E27 residents were welcome & valued in Scotland,
way before other politicians were doing this.

She is the only party leader who has really risen to the Brexit challenge and enhanced her reputation;
the other leaders, whether pro or anti, have made a total Horlicks of their policies

The SNP seem to be civic nationalists, not the godawful "blood & soil" type,
They haven't done anything terrible to the Unionists afaik, so no excuse for Unionists to "hate" them

BigChocFrenzy · 03/11/2019 23:49

NI Unionists and Nationalists "hating" each other led to the Troubles
Let's not go there

Ellie56 · 03/11/2019 23:52

I hope they're both successful.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/11/2019 23:54

Sounds like Labour have a strong candidate there, poster, with a heart-breaking personal story that she needs to get out to voters.

It would be brilliant if the architect of UC is ousted by the daughter of a woman who suffered so much because of his "reforms"

DustyDiamond · 03/11/2019 23:55

no excuse for Unionists to "hate" them

I didn't say anything about 'unionists' hating them though

The unionist spin was entirely your own invention Confused

Bloody Trump is sticking his oar in again.

I disagree, the more involvement Trump has the more chance we have of moderate Tories not wanting a damn thing to do with this far right project

dreichwinter · 04/11/2019 00:05

Trump is the best ally the center can have.

Ffs just talking to dh, remainer, centrist/left of centre floating voter. He thinks "Brexit has already happened"! This from a man who avidly consumes the news. Has to for part of his work! Is married to me!!!!

He thought the deal had completely gone through!

I soon put him right!

But it made me want to come on here and tell people to check with their friends and relations that they know the state of play.

Ellie56 · 04/11/2019 00:28

I know you're right JustAnotherPoster00 but he just winds me up as do Johnson and the rest of his vile hangers on.

This a million times. Keep at it, Trump.
