What is going to happen if there's a GE? It will basically be held on a single issue - Brexit but what if you're a brexiter who cannot abide the Tories, or a remainer who can't stand Labour? What is going to happen?

The million pound question...

There's going to be a complete mess of tactical voting & I wouldn't be surprised if we get a hung Parliament tbh

I'm personally hoping for a healthy Lib Dem opposition & an eviscerated Labour with a Tory majority but that's just a pipe dream I think

If you want Brexit above all else then there's only Tory or Brexit Party (although SDP are pro Brexit & have other decent policies, but they're so tiny I don't think they'll get anywhere - it's a shame coz I quite liked their stuff the last time I looked)

If you want 2nd ref on different deal Confused & Corbyn as PM, then it's Labour

If you want remain above all else, then Lib Dem

It's going to be a mess if we have a GE, but it should, at the very least, get a fresh impetus in Parliament & a more forward looking attitude.
(That's my hope 🙏)

DustyDiamond · 24/10/2019 16:37

I haven't watched at all today Epic so nae clue soz

MeganBacon · 24/10/2019 16:39

I don’t think people love Farage in any numbers. You can agree with brexit without finding the man agreeable. Just look at David Lammy and ask yourself how many remainers held to their views in spite of him. But his conviction and ability to condense messages into nutshells (or sound bites if you are minded to disagree) is a bit like brexit Valium in these troubled times and some people need that. I have sometimes benefitted from it after lurking on the westminsterenders threads and needed to swap one echo chamber for another just for balance. Ultimately neither are convincing though.

Dusty we can hardly anticipate a fresh impetus if we have a hung parliament.

howabout · 24/10/2019 16:41

A "Cabinet split" over whether to call a GE is a convenient get out clause for the elements of the media who don't like reporting that Boris has offered a GE several times and Labour and LibDems have demurred.

A lot of spin around what Nippy actually said about wanting a GE yesterday. In truth she used exactly the same weasel words as JC and co but was reported as "Scottish and (Welsh) Leaders" back GE.

[gliiterball] #prayforSally Brew and biscuits all round. I'm making ghastly empire treats for DD1 coming home for the 1st time since heading off to Uni.

TheMustressMhor · 24/10/2019 16:43

And in fact we might just as well have a hung parliament at the moment since the Tories have no majority.

Epicwaffle · 24/10/2019 16:47

@howabout

How exciting! My DD is back for the first time this term (2nd year uni) tonight too. It’s been ages! 🥂

as for the spin, yeah, fair point, it’s impossible to glean much in the way of genuine information from any side now. 🤦🏻‍♀️

And one more thing, what are empire treats? ConfusedGrin

DustyDiamond · 24/10/2019 16:48

Dusty we can hardly anticipate a fresh impetus if we have a hung parliament.

A fresh Parliament, even if hung, would be a very different environment to the current shitshow imo

It would allow a fresh start & MPs would have the opportunity to work collaboratively in good faith to deliver Brexit

I obviously do not wish for a hung Parliament though

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 24/10/2019 16:49

TheMustressMhor I anticipate a hung parliament too. That's why I don't think a GE is a way forward.

MeganBacon · 24/10/2019 16:49

Cabinet split = cabinet indifferent. They think they are winning either way.

Epicwaffle · 24/10/2019 16:50

Maybe we could just have a ‘well hung’ parliament?

Blush sorry... I’ll get my coat.

MeganBacon · 24/10/2019 16:51

How lovely for epic and howaboutSmile Wine

howabout · 24/10/2019 16:52

I ran electoral calculus earlier with flexed assumptions based on latest YouGov but assuming some of LibDem bleed goes back to Labour. Also flexed for latest Scottish polling which I think is pretty consistent and in line with what I see on the ground.

Assumptions I used:

Con 37% Bxt 10% Labour 25% LibDem 17% Green 8%

Result was seat split as follows: Con 383, Lab 175, LibDem 28, Green 2, SNP 41

If anything, looking at the underlying regional analysis I think this may be generous to Labour (LibDem are polling above Labour in London) and a bleed from Labour to LibDems tends to hand seats to lose Labour seats without compensating LibDem ones.

I don't think there will be a hung Parliament if there is a GE.

Also worth remembering there will be a clear out of 35 Independents and 5 Change UKers and half the LibDems (Chuka and Sam and Co and Norm and Vince). Reportedly all but the 9 (PH, Clarke, Rory etc) ex Tories will be offered the whip back. However some of the rest are resigning anyway (Soames). Bercow's seat will go back to being proper Tory.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 24/10/2019 16:53

Now I have a mental image of a load of naked MPs 😣 is that retribution for being a remainer?? Although you e punished us all with that one 😂

howabout · 24/10/2019 16:56

Really looking forward to seeing my big girl Smile

Hallowe'en is a big thing in our HH as it is DH's b'day.

Ghastly empire treats are empire biscuits with adornment. DD3 made them with cherry and strawberry shoelace spiders and gargoyles last time and I think I'm going to add eyeballs and caterpillars with jellybean bodies.

Parker231 · 24/10/2019 16:57

Government is tabling a motion on Monday for a general election.

DustyDiamond · 24/10/2019 16:59

😮

time4chocolate · 24/10/2019 17:00

Howabout and Epic - ooh that's some lovely news, enjoy.

All the best to those whose young 'uns are heading home from university tonight. May your reunion be Brexit free and brilliant.

Wow, it's all kicking off in here, am scrolling back and I can't see what's started it all except cryptic references to glitter balls?

Parker231 · 24/10/2019 17:06

From the BBC - PM putting down motion for a general election to be voted on on Monday, to take place on 12th December - No 10's gambit is that if Labour agrees, then they will timetable Brexit bill again with time for scrutiny until 6th November when they want to dissolve Parliament

Sunnyuplands · 24/10/2019 17:07

Someone's glitter balls? And Farage epic carrot??

Epicwaffle · 24/10/2019 17:29
