Westminstenders: Another day of fear and toil

In a move that surprised no one paying attention, Bercow refused to let Johnson put the WA back to the house today after it had already been presented to the house on Saturday.

This move upset the government but was entirely predictable.

This means that the only way the deal can move forward is through the WA's implementation bill (the WAB). It was published for the first time tonight (all 100 pages of it) and it will be presented to the house tomorrow.

In a lightning fast timetable parliament will be asked to scruntise it. This of course is reckless in the extreme for such an important piece of legislation. The speed at which it is being forced through is the thing that looks most likely to ruffle feathers.

The government is still trying to pretend it can make the 31st October deadline and leave by then. The reality is there isn't enough time for parliament to pass the necessary legislation and the EU will need to also ratify the deal, which in a best case scenario won't happen until next week with an extraordinary EU meeting to do so. This is much more likely to occur the week after at the earliest.

The reality is the EU need an extension themselves which is why we are very likely to get at least a short technical one and remain in the EU beyond next Thursday. It's in the UK and EU's interest if we do want to get a deal done.

Everything that Johnson does though is about optics ahead of a GE. It has to play it all as if he has been prevented from leaving as he promised.

We wait to see the pieces of a deal fall into place. It is in progress now finally it seems. For better or worse.

Icantreachthepretzels · 22/10/2019 19:35

Oh thank goodness - that was tense. And I'm afraid poor Potterhead just came in for some of my ire 'what does that 'yes' signify? don't just type 'yess!' tell me what happened woman!'

Sorry potterhead Grin

And well done rebel alliance.

SansaSnark · 22/10/2019 19:35

Where is Boris going with this?

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2019 19:35

< passing emergency 🍫🍫 around the thread >
And breathe

satanstoenailsandwich · 22/10/2019 19:35

If we have a GE is it too much to hope that Corbyn stands aside and Keir Starmer leads the party to victory and we remain in the EU Grin

AutumnCrow · 22/10/2019 19:35

Johnson insulting parliamentarians again. Twat.

Oooh, no deal threat.

MockersthefeMANist · 22/10/2019 19:36

Corbyn playing the statesman, offering to agree amendments for the House to pass the (different) bill.

BJ wants EU to tell us to fuck off, pulls the bill.

Wanker.

satanstoenailsandwich · 22/10/2019 19:36

BJ should really resign now

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2019 19:36

listening < arms drones > 🛰

Ghoulette1740 · 22/10/2019 19:36

Ta BCF. Chocolate gratefully received.

PotterHead1985 · 22/10/2019 19:36

And he has paused the bill

Monst3ra · 22/10/2019 19:37

I would LOVE Kier Starmer as Labour leader. He was fabulous on Saturday.

OublietteBravo · 22/10/2019 19:37

Phew

PotterHead1985 · 22/10/2019 19:37

@Icantreachthepretzels I am so sorry. 🤭. I was typing and cheering.

StealthPolarBear · 22/10/2019 19:37

This is agonising

MockersthefeMANist · 22/10/2019 19:37

Stupid wanker Johnson says the House has approved the bill. They have. But they haven't apporved the money or resourcs (ways and means) for it yet.

Did he think of that?

Jason118 · 22/10/2019 19:38

I need Lindt - now!

AutumnCrow · 22/10/2019 19:38

Johnson fucked in Scottish court of sessions now, maybe?

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2019 19:39

BJ says:

the EU must now decide how to respond to his "request" for a 3-month Brexit delay,
which was forced on him by MPs.

He says the government will "pause" the WAB

DarkAtEndOfUk · 22/10/2019 19:39

The trouble is we have no alternative at this point. Or rather, no alternative that the likes of great white male Johnson can countenance.

No deal threat? Didn’t the Scottish Court continue over the case where Johnson isn’t allowed to frustrate the Benn Act?

dontcallmelen · 22/10/2019 19:39

Fuck that was nail biting, he such a fucking fucking fucking wanker.

EllebellyBeeblebrox · 22/10/2019 19:39

Am I being thick, as I understand it they've approved the discussion and debate of the bill, but the government lost their vote on pushing it all through in the next three days...
