Westminstenders: Another day of fear and toil

In a move that surprised no one paying attention, Bercow refused to let Johnson put the WA back to the house today after it had already been presented to the house on Saturday.

This move upset the government but was entirely predictable.

This means that the only way the deal can move forward is through the WA's implementation bill (the WAB). It was published for the first time tonight (all 100 pages of it) and it will be presented to the house tomorrow.

In a lightning fast timetable parliament will be asked to scruntise it. This of course is reckless in the extreme for such an important piece of legislation. The speed at which it is being forced through is the thing that looks most likely to ruffle feathers.

The government is still trying to pretend it can make the 31st October deadline and leave by then. The reality is there isn't enough time for parliament to pass the necessary legislation and the EU will need to also ratify the deal, which in a best case scenario won't happen until next week with an extraordinary EU meeting to do so. This is much more likely to occur the week after at the earliest.

The reality is the EU need an extension themselves which is why we are very likely to get at least a short technical one and remain in the EU beyond next Thursday. It's in the UK and EU's interest if we do want to get a deal done.

Everything that Johnson does though is about optics ahead of a GE. It has to play it all as if he has been prevented from leaving as he promised.

We wait to see the pieces of a deal fall into place. It is in progress now finally it seems. For better or worse.

I’m honestly not sure what’s wrong with that as an outcome. Parliament have voted to approve a deal but have declined to pass it in 3 days, sounds perfectly sensible to me. Am I missing something?

MockersthefeMANist · 22/10/2019 19:41

Cue the Moggster with the latest Cunning Stunt....

(apols to Rev Spooner)

DarkAtEndOfUk · 22/10/2019 19:41

And from this **&&%^%~E$%( - he was the one who blocked May's deal, after agreeing to it. Britain is no democracy, never has been, and anyone who takes that term in vain really is a bit of a twit.

TheMShip · 22/10/2019 19:42

@Louise it is totally sensible. But the government has chosen not to continue with the bill. It could have tabled a longer timetabling (programme) motion and things would have proceeded apace with the EU happily granting a technical extension. Instead, the government has chosen to wait to see what the EU says on an extension, then will try to call a GE.

SkaraBrae · 22/10/2019 19:43

They wanted it done and dusted to reach their magic October 31st deadline.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2019 19:43

Ken Clarke asks BJ to "reconsider" pausing the Brexit deal bill's progress tomorrow.
< i.e. stop sulking, you middle-aged toddler >

"I can't quite see the logic of pausing progress on the bill when the whole house is expecting the next two days to be spent on it.

"3-4 days more" in addition to the current 3 days scheduled for scrutiny of the bill would be enough

SansaSnark · 22/10/2019 19:43

It doesn't fit in with all of Boris's posturing about leaving on 31st no matter what, I guess.

I agree that if Boris could climb down it feels like there ought to be a way forward.

Ruby2065 · 22/10/2019 19:43

How come priti patel always has that snarky smirk on her face ? Angry

tobee · 22/10/2019 19:43

Well I'm celebrating with a lilt zero! HmmGrin

PotterHead1985 · 22/10/2019 19:43

He is a complete loon. So now we wait to see what happens next. I am wondering will they call a GE

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 22/10/2019 19:44

@Ruby2065 because she's sat next to her stud muffin stroking his arm.

MockersthefeMANist · 22/10/2019 19:44

The House has conclusively shown it is not blocking Brexit and is willing to pass BJ's bill with amendments.

BJ throws toys out of the pram, it is his deal or no deal.

Glad we've cleared that up.

mrslaughan · 22/10/2019 19:44

@LouiseCollins28 - no - I don't think you are......I am sure we will find out what he is playing at soon enough....

TheMShip · 22/10/2019 19:44

Scratch that about the election, this is interesting from Dunt (again sorry)

It's interesting that Johnson did not mention an election and made the decision to pause. That indicates he doesn't want an election. I'm guessing he will lobby Europe to extend to end of November. That would neutralise Benn Act but keep the pressure up.

prettybird · 22/10/2019 19:44

It just shows how much of a wanker he is: he claimed that it had to be rushed through because time was tight and not to suppress debate Hmm- and then he pauses the Bill Confused

So which was it really Hmm?
• A tight timetable because time was tight
Or
• A tight timetable because he was scared of debate wanted to stifle debate

Pausing it demonstrates which is the correct most likely answer. Angry

satanstoenailsandwich · 22/10/2019 19:45

@LouiseCollins28 BJ is annoyed because he made that dead in a ditch comment and now he looks like a wanker. Which he is.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/10/2019 19:46

Exactly Elle.

MockersthefeMANist · 22/10/2019 19:46

If it looks like a wanker and wanks like a wanker.....

satanstoenailsandwich · 22/10/2019 19:46

Also, some members of the ERG are keen to get out ASAP so they can start making all that money they're planning to make as they've been betting on currency.

sunglasses123 · 22/10/2019 19:48

I think it’s Corbyn who doesn’t want the GE as he is likely to lose massively.

We need to pass the deal and move on. Keep Labour out, I was brought up during the Wilson and Callaghan years and wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2019 19:48

David Schneider@davidschneider

Brexit in a nutshell:

MP: “Can we make an informed decision about how Brexit will affect people and the economy?”

Rees-Mogg: “Go take a flying dump!”

Outsomnia · 22/10/2019 19:48

Need to give it time now for debate and proper scrutiny, best outcome for us all.

Honestly who could ever think that a generational shift could be passed within three days or so.

Happy For now.... So many twists and turns to come though I reckon.

Anyway what it all says to me is that no one really wants to leave. Better the devil you know and all that.

Extension until end January. Who cares about that if we are all protected.

MockersthefeMANist · 22/10/2019 19:48

Wanker has just fucked off home.

mrslaughan · 22/10/2019 19:49

I am sure very soon a "leak" from a source inside number 10 will be along soon enough.,... to try and explain muddy the waters.....

ContinuityError · 22/10/2019 19:49

I think Patel’s default setting is smirk.

Meanwhile, Johnson has left the chamber.
