Westminstenders: Another day of fear and toil

In a move that surprised no one paying attention, Bercow refused to let Johnson put the WA back to the house today after it had already been presented to the house on Saturday.

This move upset the government but was entirely predictable.

This means that the only way the deal can move forward is through the WA's implementation bill (the WAB). It was published for the first time tonight (all 100 pages of it) and it will be presented to the house tomorrow.

In a lightning fast timetable parliament will be asked to scruntise it. This of course is reckless in the extreme for such an important piece of legislation. The speed at which it is being forced through is the thing that looks most likely to ruffle feathers.

The government is still trying to pretend it can make the 31st October deadline and leave by then. The reality is there isn't enough time for parliament to pass the necessary legislation and the EU will need to also ratify the deal, which in a best case scenario won't happen until next week with an extraordinary EU meeting to do so. This is much more likely to occur the week after at the earliest.

The reality is the EU need an extension themselves which is why we are very likely to get at least a short technical one and remain in the EU beyond next Thursday. It's in the UK and EU's interest if we do want to get a deal done.

Everything that Johnson does though is about optics ahead of a GE. It has to play it all as if he has been prevented from leaving as he promised.

We wait to see the pieces of a deal fall into place. It is in progress now finally it seems. For better or worse.

I've asked @ManiacalMumsnet why clusterfuck isn't on that list Grin

thecatfromjapan · 22/10/2019 18:34

Peregrina Lexit is just . I don't think he's the only one who's taken that path. There was a kind of mania that went through Momentum & quite a few went that way.
I think it does wear off.

It's fascinating to hear about everyone's families and relationships, though.

Butterymuffin · 22/10/2019 18:34

16 pages in and I'm PMK

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 22/10/2019 18:35

I took my girly swot spider bag out yesterday. Not one comment. I'm not sure if I'm disappointed or relieved.

Peregrina · 22/10/2019 18:36

Now 96 year old MIL who reads the Daily Mail and treats it as gospel, and can't stand immigrants, voted Remain, and thinks those of the family who didn't are stupid!

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2019 18:37

"weird but I definitely would" list

Bercow's quite normal compared to some Creatures of the Crypt knocking around the Tory benches atm

Queenie's fingers must have been itching to spray Raid around

Outsomnia · 22/10/2019 18:38

Settle down people, we need you to be solid and circumspect and obey the Feudal Lord.

Feck the giggles, just look at JRM and his mini me, and M. Francois for starters. The rest of them are kind of quiet but probably have the whip hand at the end of the day.

But we are just the peasants I suppose. Back to Feudalism we go now.

AutumnCrow · 22/10/2019 18:39

Isn't it, @thecatfromjapan? I mean both sad for people like my OH, and fascinating to hear about the families and relationships.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2019 18:40

Yep, pretty I use "clusterfuck" because it is in many of the military scifi books I'm addicted to

prettybird · 22/10/2019 18:41

Dontlickthetrolley · 22/10/2019 18:48

NoWordForFluffy · 22/10/2019 18:50

Peter Kyle = good? He's got a touch of Russ Abbott I think! 🙈

When's the cunting vote tonight anyway? Bring this shit on!

MockersthefeMANist · 22/10/2019 18:52

I'd love a pissed night out with Anna Soubry.

I'd prefer a night in with Liz Kendall.

(Down, Boy!)

prettybird · 22/10/2019 18:52

Bozo makes me laugh how he sits with arms crossed, full sulk in with his body language muttering "it's so unfair. You're all so mean."

Indeed. He looks like a stroppy toddler.

DGRossetti · 22/10/2019 18:52

My constituency is miles away from Northern Ireland

Remind me again what the supposed ladder of priorities for an MP is ?
