Westminstenders: Another day of fear and toil

In a move that surprised no one paying attention, Bercow refused to let Johnson put the WA back to the house today after it had already been presented to the house on Saturday.

This move upset the government but was entirely predictable.

This means that the only way the deal can move forward is through the WA's implementation bill (the WAB). It was published for the first time tonight (all 100 pages of it) and it will be presented to the house tomorrow.

In a lightning fast timetable parliament will be asked to scruntise it. This of course is reckless in the extreme for such an important piece of legislation. The speed at which it is being forced through is the thing that looks most likely to ruffle feathers.

The government is still trying to pretend it can make the 31st October deadline and leave by then. The reality is there isn't enough time for parliament to pass the necessary legislation and the EU will need to also ratify the deal, which in a best case scenario won't happen until next week with an extraordinary EU meeting to do so. This is much more likely to occur the week after at the earliest.

The reality is the EU need an extension themselves which is why we are very likely to get at least a short technical one and remain in the EU beyond next Thursday. It's in the UK and EU's interest if we do want to get a deal done.

Everything that Johnson does though is about optics ahead of a GE. It has to play it all as if he has been prevented from leaving as he promised.

We wait to see the pieces of a deal fall into place. It is in progress now finally it seems. For better or worse.

@Bercow have you seen this?

I'm sure someone posted about the possibility of the 2nd reading vote itself being carried but programme motion vote being lost, meaning more time for debate. Hopefully the moderates will push for this.

prettybird · 22/10/2019 17:23

I think around 7. This is supposed to be the timetable

Also annoyed with DH who is a Lexiter and won't hear a word against Johnson. What is the matter with them?

If nothing else, Brexit has thrown a fascinating spotlight on the personal and political relationships folk have Grin ...

MockersthefeMANist · 22/10/2019 17:24

Looking very much like BJ will get his 2nd Reading but not his timetable, so no chance of leaving on his deal by 31/10, and no chance of it passing unamended.

pigeononthegate · 22/10/2019 17:26

Thought you guys might enjoy this (apologies if you've already seen it, I posted photos of it on a cake thread when I made it)

Bloviating Boris immortalised in sugar Grin

This drives me mad with my mother. She's all 'No matter what you think of [insert lie / indiscretion here], you have to admit that he's [insert complimentary bullshit about BoZo here].

At least I don't have to live with her. We'd never manage to not kill each other! Aren't you close to planning a patio, @peregrina?!

LouiseCollins28 · 22/10/2019 17:30

pigeononthegate I love it! That is quite, quite superb! Grin

LouiseCollins28 · 22/10/2019 17:31

he almost needs a "Where's my Brexit?!" speech bubble I think.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 22/10/2019 17:35

I've no bloody clue what's going on. I'm not going out again if I can't keep up!

Mums cousin thinks Bercow is awful. I'm going to buy a Bercow T-shirt for next time I see her Grin and take my girly swot bag.

prettybird · 22/10/2019 17:35

Love the cake - I remember seeing it at the time.

This time round my mind is obviously in the gutter as BJ's mouth reminds me of a blow up doll ..... Blush

thecatfromjapan · 22/10/2019 17:40

Lovely cake, Pigeon.

fedup21 · 22/10/2019 17:43

Right-finally catching up with today’s events. Who is going to vote with the gov tonight-is he likely to get the support for his timetable?

tobee · 22/10/2019 17:47

I suddenly feel stupidly nervous. (Not sure what the point is?) I do though when it's a big vote.

God, the worse nerves are when, on general election night, they do there close of polls exit poll reveal. EnvyEnvy

dontcallmelen · 22/10/2019 17:49

pigeon totally fab cake

AutumnCrow · 22/10/2019 17:49

Poor old venal fool Sir Roger Gale. Duped by his own leader and happy about it.

Outsomnia · 22/10/2019 17:50

Yes bated breath waiting for the vote on the timetable/programme.

Someone earlier quoted an MP as saying "we took more time deciding on a sofa than agreeing to this timetable" So apt.

If timetable passes, Committee Stage could be sabotaged with amendments couldn't it?

I hope the Lords Chamber wakes up from its slumber and knocks it all back. Will they though? I hope so.

thecatfromjapan · 22/10/2019 17:53

Timetable is genuinely up in the air - could fall either way.

I think it comes down to the Independents - which is a big of a worry because they're quite jelly-like.

Grieve voting against. Bless him.

yellowallpaper · 22/10/2019 17:55

Another day of tears and foils 😂

We obviously don't use bollocks, crap, bloody and wanker often enough Shock

We need to make a point of using them, preferably in combination Grin

I'll start: BJ is a bloody wanker, who has got us into this crap and his deal is fucking bollocks Grin

youkiddingme · 22/10/2019 18:03

My DH is also a Leaver who rates Boris. The only reason he can articulate is 'because we can make our own laws and sort everything out and stop the EU wasting all our money - they're all overpaid beurocrats'
I've given up trying to have any kind of political debate with him. He thinks, 'let's just get Brexit done then we can sort out some proper trade deals'. (and get our fish back, he misses good fish....)
He actually seems to turn his ears off at any credible argument, he just shrugs and says, 'I don't know, that's what we have politicians for'.
And believe it or not he's an otherwise intelligent human being, who listens and engages but has taken himself up a totally blind alley on this one where he can only stick his fingers in his ears and sing la la.

FadingStar · 22/10/2019 18:08

Lol my DH is the same but I don't mind. Maybe because we both grew up in Belfast..he in the East and me in the West and have a mixed marriage with different voting - I am so used to our politics being vastly different. 😂 We never ever fight or argue about it.
