Westminstenders: Another day of fear and toil

In a move that surprised no one paying attention, Bercow refused to let Johnson put the WA back to the house today after it had already been presented to the house on Saturday.

This move upset the government but was entirely predictable.

This means that the only way the deal can move forward is through the WA's implementation bill (the WAB). It was published for the first time tonight (all 100 pages of it) and it will be presented to the house tomorrow.

In a lightning fast timetable parliament will be asked to scruntise it. This of course is reckless in the extreme for such an important piece of legislation. The speed at which it is being forced through is the thing that looks most likely to ruffle feathers.

The government is still trying to pretend it can make the 31st October deadline and leave by then. The reality is there isn't enough time for parliament to pass the necessary legislation and the EU will need to also ratify the deal, which in a best case scenario won't happen until next week with an extraordinary EU meeting to do so. This is much more likely to occur the week after at the earliest.

The reality is the EU need an extension themselves which is why we are very likely to get at least a short technical one and remain in the EU beyond next Thursday. It's in the UK and EU's interest if we do want to get a deal done.

Everything that Johnson does though is about optics ahead of a GE. It has to play it all as if he has been prevented from leaving as he promised.

We wait to see the pieces of a deal fall into place. It is in progress now finally it seems. For better or worse.

I'm not an advocate of Scottish Independence, but there is no excuse for how rude and disrespectful other MPs consistently are to the SNP

  • to the MPs personally, their party, above all to Scotland
prettybird · 22/10/2019 15:55

....and yet you want to stay part of the UK which means participating in WM Confused

(That's a genuine Confused, not a snarky one).

Sostenueto · 22/10/2019 16:11

PMK. Seems to me that all semblance of respect for the house by the Tories has gone. They disgust me more each day. I hope the majority if them lose their seats if there us a GE ( even though they won't Envy not envy)

MockersthefeMANist · 22/10/2019 16:12

They walk out because they want their lunch and because they have work to do.

All MPs will be expected by the whips to turn up for the PM and Leader of the opposition, to support their side and barrack the other. After that, those wishing to speak will hang around, and the rest will leave.

After the SNP leader spoke, nearly all of his MPs left.

prettybird · 22/10/2019 16:17

Whittingdale tells Lady Hermon, when she intervened to complain that there is nothing in the Bill about the complex consent arrangements for NI, that "The PM gave assurances that the measures in NI will be transitory and self-dissolving and hopes that that is sufficient" Hmm

Aye right Hmm

prettybird · 22/10/2019 16:19

Mockers - if it didn't happen just about every. single. time. your excuse justification might be acceptable. Confused

But it does, so it's not Sad

MockersthefeMANist · 22/10/2019 16:24

It happens every time because that is the order in which speakers are called: Govt, Official Opposition, 3rd Party.....

They do make a point of not leaving quietly. This is a calculated snub, but they did just the same when the Libs were 3rd Party.

Hester54 · 22/10/2019 16:29

derxa Because they just keep repeating the same old rubbish, offering nothing new, bored of hearing now I suspect

prettybird · 22/10/2019 16:37

Doesn't make it right Hmm. And given that Scotland is a distinct and separate country within this supposedly equal union of nations, it is extremely disrespectful. Angry

And the SNP can claim to represent Scotland - it has well over 50% of the MPs.

prettybird · 22/10/2019 16:39

Oooh - Grieve has said he'll be voting both against the programme motion and the bill itself Shock

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2019 16:42

"The PM gave assurances that the measures in NI will be transitory and self-dissolving and hopes that that is sufficient"

Lying bastard - I doubt if Hermon's naive enough to believe him

The Irish Sea border is permanent:

  • The first 4 years after Brexit are without any consent
  • Thereafter every few years there is a vote in NI on whether to leave it, but the Nationalists can and would prevent that

A sea border is the only practical solution to safeguarding the SM and avoiding a land border,
but he shouldn't lie about what it means and be so dismissive - that's disrespecful towards NI.

DGRossetti · 22/10/2019 16:46

Have the Tories ever been anything but ?

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2019 16:47

Sammy Wilson, DUP:

"Brexit is supposed to be about taking back sovereignty.
Well this deal isn't going to take back sovereignty for Northern Ireland."

Not the brightest tool in the DUP box, is he Hmm

Wakey wakey, Sammy:
Brexit is going to accelerate a United Ireland, all because you DUPes thought Brexit would wreck the GFA.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2019 16:50

The UUP hammer away at their DUP rivals - this is all an electoral gift to them

I was wondering if the DUP's C&S still existed !

David Blevinss@skydavidblevins*

The Ulster Unionist Party’s leader-in-waiting @SteveAikenUUPP^ has called on the DUP to “terminate” its Confidence and Supply Agreement with the Tory government. #Brexit

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2019 16:52

Dying in another ditch ?

George Parker@GeorgeWParker

NEW
Am told that @BorisJohnson is now ready to accept a ten day Brexit delay beyond “do or die” day on Oct 31 if he loses programme motion tonight.

But only if EU says it’s the final, final extension.

“They won’t do that - so in practice we’ll pull the bill,” says No 10 source

Peregrina · 22/10/2019 16:56

What happens if they pull the Bill?

What beats me is how otherwise moderate Tories that I know can stand for this contemptible behaviour.

Also annoyed with DH who is a Lexiter and won't hear a word against Johnson. What is the matter with them?

Andonandonan · 22/10/2019 16:59

Oh David Lammy good points well made. Finally some sense.

pigeononthegate · 22/10/2019 17:00

Anyone know what time the votes are expected tonight?

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 22/10/2019 17:01

Depressing conversation with mum who's been visited by her cousin today. Cousin says she trusts Boris over anyone else. When challenged about his lies she just said Corbyn lies too and is an anti-Semite so she'd rather have Johnson. Luckily I wasn't there as otherwise family relations would be very strained Grin

tobee · 22/10/2019 17:07

Are the votes at 7?

prettybird · 22/10/2019 17:09

What happens if they pull the Bill?

BJ has said that he'd call a GE Confused ....but it's not in his "gift" Confused

prettybird · 22/10/2019 17:11

But Grieve voting against it (both the 2nd reading and the programme motion) would be counter-balanced by the like of Onn, Flint and Nandy Angry

tobee · 22/10/2019 17:12

Is Grieve likely to be able to encourage others?

TheMShip · 22/10/2019 17:17

This was an exercise in regaining the sovereignty of parliament. And if it's about regaining the sovereignty of parliament, then treat parliament with respect. If you are taking back control, then show that you are worthy to exercise that control.

Oh Rory infuriates me! Speeches like this, yet votes with the gov't on Saturday.

PotterHead1985 · 22/10/2019 17:22

I wish they'd tell us when the vote is. I need to go to the shop for cigarettes and wine dinner.
