Oh dearie me. Thanks so much for being such good value this morning, TheGrass. wonder where I might acquire a 45 rpm copy of God Save the Queen so I might stand to attention and salute as I read your missives. To read that you don’t blame people is such a comfort. Oh they will be so grateful to you.
Happily out now with a picture of a Basil Fawlty type character before me, becoming increasingly ranty and swivelley eyed as he decries the dastardly doings of the monstrous bureaucrats over the Channel.
Have a nice day and do watch the blood pressure.

Peregrina · 19/09/2019 12:18

I really don't know why you are bothering to cut and paste about VAT Clavinova. It's an EU tax. Once out of the EU we can scrap it altogether, and the Govt can think up some other money making wheeze; preferably one with which the burden is felt more by the poor and the rich. Wink

Mamamia456 · 19/09/2019 12:20

Bellingsurge - Eh ?

You obviously haven't read page 16.

“You obviously haven't read page 16.”

How do you get page numbers?

UK Contributions to the EU rocket by 20%

July 2019:
"The amount that the UK gives to the EU rose by over two and a half billion pounds in the financial year to April 2019."

How do you get page numbers?

I am on a desktop at the moment - perhaps ipads and phones are different?

I would feel pleased that democracy had eventually won out, despite the best efforts of some to derail it.

Being able to and succeeding (using democratic means) to oppose a democratic vote is a fundamental principle of democracy or we would not have an official opposition party after a GE.

Given that you have provided 4 different links - page 16 of what?

Does your link specifically say words to the effect that "we know that this is an EU tax, but since it's such a jolly good money raiser we intend to keep it. And furthermore, we could go back to purchase tax, but we can't be arsed."

Peregrina · 19/09/2019 12:48

45 rpm? Do you not want a 78 rpm on shellac?

Mamamia456 · 19/09/2019 12:48

Jasjas1973 - Why would I make them up, my stats all come from reputable sources so I stand by the 75%.

If you don't want to believe me that's your choice.

Just seen this;

A state-of-the-art new £75m drug discovery centre is scheduled to open at The London Cancer Hub in the first half of 2020

www.londoncancerhub.org/news/

13,000 new jobs could be created by The London Cancer Hub

"The London Cancer Hub will allow the ICR and The Royal Marsden to enhance and expand their facilities, generate income and provide a sustainable future for their activities. It has the potential to be a game-changer for UK cancer research and treatment – with transformative benefits for patients and their families."

www.londoncancerhub.org/

New cancer data hubs being established - to enable cutting-edge research and innovation to benefit UK patients.

"A new UK-wide partnership, hosted by UCLPartners, aims to transform how cancer data from across the UK can be used to improve patient care."

'Could' is not 'Will'. Although it would be extremely welcome, where will the staff come from?

TheElementsSong · 19/09/2019 13:05

I'm not sure I follow: is this new hub because of Brexit?

This thread - AuldAlliance 09.56 - long post.

Although it would be extremely welcome, where will the staff come from?

From all over the world I would imagine;

"Hugely ambitious in scale and scope, The London Cancer Hub aims to become the world’s leading centre for cancer research, treatment, education and enterprise and once complete is projected to contribute around £1.2 billion per year to the UK economy."

Mamamia456 · 19/09/2019 13:05

Peregrina - "Could is not will" - Remember that then when you're reading about Brexit.

LaurieMarlow · 19/09/2019 13:06

Shame we won’t be attracting top research talent from the EU to work there, huh?

Well it might be - Wink

Shame we won’t be attracting top research talent from the EU to work there, huh?

I don't see why not.

TheElementsSong · 19/09/2019 13:12

Still not following, having read that link: are you now saying that researchers have hitherto been inhibited in collaborating with the USA because of EU membership and therefore this new hub is because of Brexit?

Peregrina · 19/09/2019 13:13

I read that post all right. It talks of EU and Member states. No where does it talk about what non member states do.

I suspect, but don't know, that many countries have a form of purchase tax. So I will repeat - VAT is an EU tax. It was formerly an EEC tax and the UK introduced it when we wanted to go into the Common Market.

LaurieMarlow · 19/09/2019 13:13

i don't see why not.

Why would they?

More complicated visa situations, increasing xenophobia, Sterling salaries stretching less far for them.

Jaxhog · 19/09/2019 13:21

Wracking my brains to think of anything. Oh yes, my Canadian passport might get more use when I move there.

Clavinova · 19/09/2019 13:22

Peregrina
I'm not really following your point - you asked why I bothered to cut and paste - I was pointing out the misunderstanding by AuldAlliance up thread and highlighting the problems we've had with EU VAT. We haven't left the EU yet.
