The length of any extension will be up for negotiation, the EU cannot just dictate it

Incorrect. Read again:

(2) If the European Council decides to agree an extension of the period in Article 50(3) of the Treaty on European Union ending at 11.00pm on 31 October 2019, but to a date other than 11.00pm on 31 January 2020, the Prime Minister must, 5 within a period of two days beginning with the end of the day on which the European Council’s decision is made, or before the end of 30 October 2019, whichever is sooner, notify the President of the European Council that the United Kingdom agrees to the proposed extension

It is an open cheque book all the way for the EU.

EU could say they wanted a 50 year extension. As per the wording of the Act the UK Prime Minister must accept.

mummmy2017 · 11/09/2019 08:34

What would you do if Labour gets in due to remainer antics in parliament and they clobbers you with higher taxes, labour strikes and steals landlords houses?

Doubletrouble99 · 11/09/2019 08:35

What does everyone think of Labour's 'new' Brexit stance to have a leave or remain ballot but with no indication as to what they will support. All of a sudden they have made up their mind, well sort of, but without discussing it with 'conference'! I thought this was their problem all along, they couldn't deviate from what conference had decided last year!!!
Just complete bollocks.

Parker231 · 11/09/2019 08:43

Taxes will be increasing under Boris to pay for all the promises he has been making. Any party will have to increase taxes to ensure the public services recover from all the budget cuts we’ve been enduring.

jasjas1973 · 11/09/2019 08:46

What would you do if Labour gets in due to remainer antics in parliament and they clobbers you with higher taxes, labour strikes and steals landlords houses?

If Labour get in, then that is because they won a GE, voted in by a majority of constituencies.

So, on your specific point, what these remainer MPs have done must have support across the country?

Only very high earners face a small tax rise, the right to buy isn't a Labour policy and i believe we have strikes under the Tories? BA anyone?
It is democratic right to go on strike or do you wish to take that away from ordinary people as well?
If it were made easier, we hadn't have some of the abuses of workers we ve seen at Sports Direct and low paid workers would be able to share in the profits many companies have made at their employees expense.

The next Con Govt will rise retirement age to 75.

mummmy2017 · 11/09/2019 08:55

Labour will change their minds again, they just did.
Their new motto is , yes I said that but I didn't mean what you heard.

Parker231 · 11/09/2019 09:00

Sounds like you are talking about Boris!

ContinuityError · 11/09/2019 09:04

Mystery

No, the EU cannot “dictate” any length of extension - Parliament still has to approve any extension other than to 31/01/20:

(3)But subsection (2) does not apply if the House of Commons has decided not to pass a motion moved by a Minister of the Crown within a period of two calendar days beginning with the end of the day on which the European Council’s decision is made or before the end of 30 October 2019, whichever is sooner, in the following form—

“That this House has approved the extension to the period in Article 50(3) of the Treaty on European Union which the European Council has decided.”

DustyDiamond · 11/09/2019 09:05

thought this was their problem all along, they couldn't deviate from what conference had decided last year!!!

Yep!
As is par for the course with Labour, their steadfast refusal to deviate from conference decisions is mere lip-service.

I'm pretty sure they also decided in conference to push for GE...

GoFiguire · 11/09/2019 09:06

I can’t wait for Brexit!!!!! I’m looking forward to the food rationing as I might finally be able to lose some weight if there is. I food or petrol and I have to walk everywhere.

Party 🥳 🎉 yayyyyyyy

DustyDiamond · 11/09/2019 09:13

😂😂 As predicted, someone tries out the 'no! It's not up to the EU, Parliament have to approve it' in a supposed gotcha.

People are not stupid.

The remain backing, Brexit-blocking, power grabbing charlatans in Parliament will agree to anything the EU proposes.

Parliament as it currently stands is not the Parliament elected in 2017 - a number of MPs have left their party and are actively going against the manifestos on which they stood.
Further, they're actively going against the things they themselves personally promised their constituencies.

It should be mandatory to have a by-Election when an MP resigns the whip.

ContinuityError · 11/09/2019 09:15

As predicted, someone tries out the 'no! It's not up to the EU, Parliament have to approve it' in a supposed gotcha.

Or maybe just someone correcting an obvious factual error 🤔😂

MysteryTripAgain · 11/09/2019 09:18

Parliament still has to approve any extension other than to 31/01/20

Considering it was Parliament that pushed the Act through, do you think they will not object to whatever date the EU says?

Would be interesting if EU said the extension is for 40 years and the remain MPs accepted. They would be named and become public knowledge.

How would they sleep at night knowing they had pissed off 17.4 Million people?

ContinuityError · 11/09/2019 09:22

Well it’s up to Johnson and his Government to persuade the democratically elected Parliament one way or the other if an extension other than 31/1/20 is proposed.

After all, he has these great powers of persuasion (allegedly).

bellinisurge · 11/09/2019 09:23

Why do the DUP get to veto a reasonable solution to Brexit? They don't count in Parliament any more. @mummmy2017

frumpety · 11/09/2019 09:25

It should be mandatory to have a by-Election when an MP resigns the whip.

Why ?

Also wasn't the whip removed by Boris as opposed to them resigning it?

mummmy2017 · 11/09/2019 09:27

MPs need to worry about how far they can go before they are seen to be overstepping what they were voted in Todo.
The UK won't stand for it and questions will be raised about it, this will turn people to Boris...

DustyDiamond · 11/09/2019 09:32

wasn't the whip removed by Boris as opposed to them resigning it?
I specifically stated 'resign' the whip.
As in, voluntarily and actively making a choice.

DustyDiamond · 11/09/2019 09:34

Sorry, posted too soon...

There are several MPs who have voluntarily resigned the whip and/or joined other parties during this session - from Labour, Tory & (if I remember correctly) a Lib Dem MP as well)

MysteryTripAgain · 11/09/2019 09:56

The UK won't stand for it and questions will be raised about it, this will turn people to Boris

Hence why opposition opposes a General Election

frumpety · 11/09/2019 10:04

Fair do's Dusty , the last 21 had it removed though didn't they ? I don't really understand why, as people like Boris and Jacob have voted against their party/government on numerous occasions in keeping with their own opinions on a subject ?

BelleHathor · 11/09/2019 10:39

I think that's the point , under May discipline had completely disappeared. The 21 thought that they could vote against what was essentially a confidence vote and they would be no consequences. Johnson had to "fire them" to show his authority and also to send a message. From lurking on leave leaning forums the general consensus is that Johnson was right and that the swamp is being drained. To many people the 21 look like traitors/quislings.

jasjas1973 · 11/09/2019 11:04

Propagation declared unlawful, unanimous decision as they believe BJ did it to stop the democratic function of Parliament.

Subject to appeal but what a farce this new Govt/PM is.

I'd like to see that any change of PM triggering an immediate GE.

BelleHathor · 11/09/2019 11:09

Supreme Court it is then The judges must be like wtf , would love to be a fly on the wall 😮

time4chocolate · 11/09/2019 11:17
