I'd go for stewing the apples as a puree and then freezing as suggested or storing in jars depending on space available.

I am going to start putting together a small Christmas list, we are pretty modest in that department but if things are going to get ropey better to get those purchases out of the way now.

bellinisurge · 29/08/2019 06:58

Too kind @flouncyfanny Smile

GoneWishing · 29/08/2019 07:03

Excellent, a new thread. With a lot of the non-food stuff on Blackeyed 's list, I've not so much stockpiled, as got into the habit of always having a spare in the house. I'm still buying a new one whenever I'm about to finish a pack of something - only the new one will be my new spare, and the old spare gets opened. I hope this will serve me, if I suddenly can't buy a new one of something for a bit.

Why would you need lots of set squares? I've never used one in my life!

I'm like that too, @GoneWishing. I don't tend to run out of stuff because I keep stocks in generally. I now have more stocks in than usual, but I'm a 'full cupboards / freezer' person anyway.

Someone on another thread said they didn't have room for 3 days' supplies in their house, which surprised me. Surely that's just having a normal fridge, freezer and cupboard space?!

I'm confident that I could 'do Christmas' now from my stores, if necessary. Which is a comfort to me, it has to be said. I'm going to make my Christmas puddings soon (I'm doing mini ones for DH and DS) so they'll be done too. I think I'll buy my oranges for pastry and freeze the zest / juice now too. Il add to my list!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/08/2019 07:45

Please don't put fruit purée into sterilised jam jars. You risk botulism. It needs anerobic non acidic conditions to grow.

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/08/2019 09:25

Set squares: Secondary school kids. God knows what DD does but she uses lots.

getupgonow · 29/08/2019 09:26

What's the best way to store it @OhYouBadBadKitten ?

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/08/2019 09:27

Apples keep in the bottom of the fridge until Christmas.

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/08/2019 09:28

Freezer is good for storing apple purée.

Gatepost1820 · 29/08/2019 09:28

I've finished with the suitcases for the summer so will be using them to store my supplies. All the treats will be Hidden in plain sight!

bellinisurge · 29/08/2019 09:28

When I made fruit purée for my dd as a baby I froze it in ice cube trays.
I have other ways of preserving fruit these days- dehydration or jam making. I freeze bananas to whizz up in smoothies.

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/08/2019 09:42

I finally got my suitcases back under the stair yesterday after holiday. Had to wash and dry the towels and tea towels that we take every year. Then clear out all the stuff that is in the way. The rest of the holiday stuff has to go back in there yet. Along with a few bits and bobs.

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/08/2019 09:44

Very late yesterday having spent lots of time in bed with my eyes closed...

GoneWishing · 29/08/2019 09:54

DH is having his fillings replaced today. They're old and would have needed replacing sometime in the next few years, so he's decided to get them out of the way.

I'm city-bound today anyway, so will make a start on the Christmas Box. I don't actually have a spare physical box, but there's space in my wardrobe for that stuff. Itching to write a list of things I'll need for it (just because I love a good list), but for today getting some naice chocolates will do.

Need to book an optician's appointment. Need to write more lists.

FractalChaos · 29/08/2019 09:59

So I have a pear tree - I was going to cook them with a bit of sugar and cinnamon and put in jars - should I not do that now then? How can I store them? The kids love stewed pears :( I only hve the small freezer as part of my fridge.

bellinisurge · 29/08/2019 10:05

I would "pear butter". I made "apple butter" last year and it was delicious. In fact, I now fancy some on bread just now.
It's basically stewed down to a sort of loose purée but it has other ingredients to make it preservable.
Google to find a recipe. In fact, I might make some myself if I see some pears to buy.
Love pears.

GoneWishing · 29/08/2019 10:20

Oh that's a good idea. My pear tree is full of fruit this year, too. Way too many for our pear crumble needs.

magimedi · 29/08/2019 10:33

It's only DH & me here so I have been concentrating on things to make basics tasty.

I make a lot of curries & have found that you can whizz up a big batch of ginger, garlic & onion paste & it freezes really well.

As for frozen veg, Tesco's leaf spinach is amazing. Just slowly defrost it in a pan over a low heat with oil or butter & garlic or any other flavours. Doesn't go soggy at all & tastes really good. Better value than fresh.

SistemaAddict · 29/08/2019 10:51

I ordered coke from Waitrose but it's best before the end of September!! The children will be happy though 🙄 I now have Christmas chocolate supplies, dried fruit, and cranberry sauce towards Christmas. I'm disappointed that my chocolate raisins have been substituted with yogurt raisins but I got them free and they'll be good for lunch boxes and my daily calorie intake will be less Grin

Need to pull out everything from under the stairs, except the suitcases, to pack it all away.

Finally did my Amazon order and the oh fuck rucksack is coming soon.

SistemaAddict · 29/08/2019 11:01

Everyone should have an oh fuck rucksack. I have extra toothbrushes and toothpaste for such a bag. Our travel bottle for conditioner has gone walkabout since we packed in case the dam burst. It will turn up. Oh duck rucksack should contain chocolate and essential medication I think.
