Westminstenders: 30 days to save us all!

It's quite remarkable to watch the British press atm.

It's like it doesn't understand English. Well only if its English spoken by foreigners.

Merkel made the observation that the UK had spent two years looking at the Irish border but had failed to come up with a workable solution, and now Johnson has waltzed in and made statements about how the backstop must go, and only has 30 days in which this can be achieved.

The British press writes this up as Merkel giving the UK a deadline to come up with a new solution.

Which is nonsense. The UK have a deadline to save itself, from itself and that's 31st October. This is a self imposed deadline.

Meanwhile comes out with the Brexiteer smack down that he didn't think the UK wS leaving the EU to regain its sovereignty only to become a vassalage or junior partner to the US.

Both these ideas being the result of leaving the EU have long been key issues. From before the ref. Both have been the UK's to solve in order to get the terms the UK wants from a deal.

The referendum was about choosing to align with the EU or to ditch that and rights and align closely with the US. Then Trump happened and the sell on this got harder, but still essentially the same. And it continues.

And then there was the Irish border. The magic solution to Brexit that doesn't break the GFA. I personally think there isn't one as long as the DUP have their red lines about the Irish sea.

So here we are. More than 3 years after the ref.

Leavers still have no plan. Apart for charge headlong over the cliff. Remains still have their heads wedged up their own backsides and also, after spending months criticising every one else on social media anyway who makes a stand again this bull shit.

Yet the newspapers fail to report what Merkel said or why the UK has this issue in the first place. Its an ongoing exercise in national delusion and self denial.

I doubt London will have the premium on being problematic.

NI doesn’t matter. A lot if people didn’t even know the difference between NI and the RoI or that NI is part if the uk before the referendum....
So why bother to report such thing?

bellinisurge · 24/08/2019 21:43

I presume you are joking @Myriade

"The initial legal guidance given... is that shutting parliament may well be possible,
unless action being taken in the courts to block such a move by anti-Brexit campaigners succeeds in the meantime."

Our hearing to stop the putsch is on 6 September.

Darran Marshall @darranmarshall
Sunday Times: @BorisJohnson plan to do away with backstop involves the UK taking a “sectoral approach” with the economy in close alignment with the EU on rules that affect trade across the Irish border - and free to diverge in other areas.

Number 10 have war games an election on 17th October - the day of the EU summit... And think Tories could win it.

Peter Foster@pmdfoster
An all-U.K. sectoral approach a la Chequers, the deal he resigned over? And which had not workable plan for customs (recall the joke dual-tariff New Customs Partnership?). Give over.

Yes well, maybe people really are that thick...

Songsofexperience · 24/08/2019 23:39

I never liked the result of that stupid ref but respected reasonable leave options (EEA/EFTA, or at least customs union). No deal though is for the lobotomised.
I always thought

Let's hope someone talks some sense into the MPs, particularly Corbyn and refuse to let him hold a GE. Until he's crashed us out, and he has to deal with the shit hitting the fan.

Sostenueto · 25/08/2019 05:54

Corbyn ( though useless) has tried his very best but the remainers in Parliament still won't back him so there's nothing much he can do. Whatever anyone says he has lasted longer as leader of the opposition than 3 priministers. The lack of respect for Corbyn for being the leader of the opposition is the stumbling block for remain MPs. They need to get over their personal opinions of him if they really are serious about stopping a no deal brexit.

Change the word "backstop" for what it actually is "a safety net" and that statement reads very differently. Inspired the the comment of a pp on one of the NI threads, we should start calling it a safety net and not a backstop.

Where English actually means Scottish. There's a thread specifically on this.
Fucking ignorant clowns.

BeardedMum · 25/08/2019 07:44

It’s getting worse every day. Remainers or those who don’t want to leave with no deal and worry about The GFA don’t have a voice or anyone who represent them at all anymore. Just dragged towards the cliff edge. Extraordinary times.

I am currently in an EU country and people are horrified and bemused at the same time.

jasjas1973 · 25/08/2019 07:45

The UKs relations with the EU could rapidly go down hill, any EU citizen here, should head home.

I think we are making the same mistakes that Germany made in the late 20s early 30s, people who should know better, putting career ahead of what is right, staying silent or playing politics.

Its truly shocking what is happening to the UK, its peoples and its Govt - tories/bxp on 47% of the vote.

No-deal wont halt the rise of far right politics, any problems etc will be blamed on the EU and we'll all believe it.
