Plans to end freedom of movement on day after Brexit.

Don’t know.
I will be in Spain but will need to fly home a few days later. The complicated bit is that we will be flying home from Portugal so when I leave Portugal to go to Spain we will be in The EU and might need a visa to get back into Portugal to get on the plane home I’m not sure what will happen.

I think Spain and Portugal are both in Schengen so don’t have passport checks for people travelling between the two. Good luck though!

There’s nothing in place though. EU citizens were told that they had until the end of 2020 to apply for settled status. This has changed the goalposts.

No deal is end of 2020

The EU Settlement Scheme is open. You can apply noww_ if you meet the criteria.
The deadline for applying is 30 June 2021.
Which status you gett_ may depend on when you apply.
If the UK leaves the EU without a deal
You will need to be living in the UK before it leaves the EU to apply. The deadline for applying will be 31 December 2020.

Oh and even if everyone had applied already and got settled status there is no card or letter or anything "in hand" to prove you got it.

There is a link for anyone who needs to check your status where you need to provide them with whichever ID you used to apply. That's going to be fun at customs, without considering the fact that some might've applied with national ID but travelled with passport or the other way around.

I wonder what hoops that countries with lots of UK pensioners to support will bring in ....

I voted remain. I’m concerned about the hardline this new Government is taking. The article states that it puts EU citizens at risk of discrimination. So as a British passport holder, it’s not an issue for me personally but is likely to cause issues for EU citizens living here.

Yes dirty but my fear is that I may need a Shengen VISA as a non EU citizen. The border where we cross is currently open so hopefully it stays that way even for British people
Worst case scenario I get a longer holiday while it’s sorted!

It would be ridiculous for them to stop you leaving. I can see that the EU might stop people entering without a visa, but not leaving.

If you do end up having to stay for a few extra days, you’ll miss the shit hitting the fan here too! Win win.

I have lived here for 20 years, hold an EEA passport and travel in and out of the UK several times a month. My children are British citizens but also travel on EEA passports on a very regular basis. I don’t see how they are going to police this so just seem to play into a Daily Hell headline showing strength.

I think you get an email re: settled status? I'm planning to print it off and keep it tucked inside my passport.

I'm not looking forward to applying for settled status. I was between jobs May-Oct 2014 so I'm going to apply in Nov as then I have 5 years continuous NI contributions (though some are child benefit which i think doesn't 'count' ffs.)

I don’t know they are going to police it. If an EU citizen who has lived here for years goes on holiday and hasn’t applied for settled status but is here legally, how are they going to distinguish between that person and another EU citizen who hasn’t lived here. I mean at immigration at airports etc.

I'm hoping that all this gloom and doom, bad news, leaks, worst case scenarios etc. is just a way of turning the tanker around on the Brexiteer No Deal people, so that they might have to think it out again.

In other words, Johnson is running scared, and instead of making the right decision for the good of the country, is hoping that the country will rise up through fear and loathing and decide things for him.

Thus the Tories will stay intact.

Also access to the NHS and benefits, those rights will still exist for EU citizens who can prove they were living here before 31st October 2019 but any new arrival won’t have those rights, I can see why people think the risk of discrimination towards EU citizens will increase as they’ll all be subjected to extra checks that British citizens aren’t.

Re the end of freedom of movement. That’s what they actively want. It’s not a concern for them as they probably only go to Spain once a year and you know Spain needs their money so will let them in.

Camomila you do indeed get an email. I intend to carry printed copies when I travel with my DDs and also have it on our phones.

At least until such time as my DDs are done with their education and we can leave this country permanently.

I just thought of a plus side of Brexit! Those of us with British DHs/DC can make our DHs wrangle the DC at airports while we go through the EU gates all by ourselves.

(It'll probably be a nightmare, I can imagine babies wailing mummmy or dadddy because they wanted to go through with the other parent and immigration officials huffing about it)
