How is this even workable?

The Windrush scandal shows that people can live in UK for decades and not realise that they lack regularised status. :(

BeardedMum · 18/08/2019 18:24

Yes it very worrying. I have lived here for over 20 years, am a higher rate tax payer and never use the nhs (private healthcare and had my children in my home country which in my view offers better healthcare). It is likely we will all leave if Brexit goes badly as our jobs would move out anyway, but if I stay I worry that the goalposts will change ie if something was to happen to me health wise and when I retire. Despite working all my adult life in the Uk would be entitled to anything or thrown back to my home country as a sick pensioner? I don’t trust this country at all and I worry more for people in my position who have for example been SAPHs.

DarkAtEndOfUK · 18/08/2019 18:25

That was people from 1950s though lijkk. Records and record keeping was all very much less stringent and strict. The direction the UK is taking does not lead to confidence that that relaxed approach will continue.

Ulverstonian · 18/08/2019 18:25

We’re renting for the first time in years (sold a house and looking to buy another one), as part of the rental application process our immigration status was checked. I had a hospital appointment recently and the letter asked me to take my passport along as they were conducting extra checks (I’m British and have been registered with the NHS for years). There seem to be a lot more checks now than there used to be, so not as easy to live undocumented.

I can see this causing problems for EU citizens in all sorts of areas, as well as travel. The chance of discrimination is high as some places will decide its easier to just not rent or offer a job to an EU citizen if the background checks aren’t fail safe or are difficult.

Camomila · 18/08/2019 18:33

I am a bit worried for DMs pension, she has about 20 years worth of Italian NI contributions and 10/15 English. I'm going to nag her to get it sorted out before Brexit day.

I do feel sad for the older generation...I'm only 31 and if I had to leave I'm still young enough to think of it as an adventure. My parents would be heart broken. I don't think it will come to that though as long as we all jump through all the hoops.

Ulverstonian · 18/08/2019 18:45

@BeardedMum

My Polish friend said the other day that she wondered if the settled status database would be used in future to send low earners/benefit recipients back to their country of origin.

Myriade · 18/08/2019 18:47

I’m sorry but I can’t see the issue. Arriving in the uk, EU citizens will be treated like non EU citizens are now. No more quick entry but needing to show passports and ‘proving’ you can stay in the UK (I’m
Assuming this means no need for a visa but new ’rules’ about who can or cannot get NHS treatments for example. Even though this has been denied by the government).

For brits coming in the EU, I suspect the same will apply than with non Eu countries where no visa is required.
People living there will have to see what different governments will ask them to do (knowing that the structure already exists. A PR card is an EU scheme people can already apply to like the SS here)

IMO there is no ‘new nightmare sprung onto us’ or changing goalposts. This has always been obvious to me and requires much less hassle than sorting out the coming and going of goods.
What will be much harder is what retired people will be able to do/afford with the pound crashing....

StockTakeFucks · 18/08/2019 18:49

@Camomila and @pointythings you do indeed get an email, however it says in it that it is not proof of settled status and provides a link where this can be checked by whomever needs to check. You will need to provide the id you used for the application.

What I have done is check myself and take a screenshot (and print) of the page that shows my picture and settled status underneath. If that's not accepted then the need to access the link themselves .

Myriade · 18/08/2019 18:49

@ulverstonian, I have the SS.
The only thing that is safe, IMO, is to them get British citizenship. As a safety precaution.

StockTakeFucks · 18/08/2019 18:53

@Myriade how is not changing goalposts if the government website says the deadline of no deal is 31st of December 2020, but if this comes into place, this means everyone that needs to prove they're allowed to live here, will have to apply and have received a decision by end of October?

BeardedMum · 18/08/2019 18:54

@Myriads, not all countries allow dual citizenships and tbh a lot of us foreigners might take the view that we don’t want to be British at the moment. I know all leavers think we are desperate to do we can claim benefits and exhaust the NHS. Ridiculous.

MiniMum97 · 18/08/2019 18:57

@camomila. You only need to have lived in the uk for 5 years to get settled status. If you don't have that status then the rules are more complex. I think these may be what you are thinking of? For example the pre settled status rules require that someone has 5 years as a qualifying person eg a worker or self employed person to qualify for a perm ant right to reside. Settled status rules are much more simple.

DoubleHelix79 · 18/08/2019 18:57

Glad I got my UK passport sorted even though it looked like it wouldn't be necessary.

This is not the county I moved to back in 2007 - it felt like a much more open and welcoming county back then.

pointythings · 18/08/2019 19:00

StockTake that is a really good point, I will do the same thing. Thanks.

jasjas1973 · 18/08/2019 19:04

There is no quick entry now, anyone going through the UK border is subject to passport control.
What is proposed by this idiot Patel is to by-pass Parliament and introduce new immigration rules on EU citizens, who live here but coming and going from their place of birth.
There is not the time for these people to get SS by 31/10 even if they wanted too.
Though we could issue these folk with say a coloured patch that they could sew on a garment in the meantime or to avoid fraud, perhaps a tattooed number?

If i were a EU citizen working/living in the UK, i'd be planning on going back home asap, this country could well become a dangerous place for foreigners.

Camomila · 18/08/2019 19:06

I heard that the settled status app checks NI contributions...so if you are 'easy' because you've been working for 5 years sometimes you get approved without having to gather together extra paperwork like bills etc.

Ulverstonian · 18/08/2019 19:17

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.politico.eu/article/eu-citizens-in-uk-must-prove-right-to-free-health-care-after-no-deal-brexit/amp/

This is interesting, it says that only 1 million of the 3 million EU citizens living in the UK have applied for settled status. If we crash out on 31st October then from the 1st November those 2 million people without settled status will have to prove they are entitled to healthcare. The goalposts HAVE changed as people were told they had until the end of 2020 to apply. Technically they can still apply until the end of 2020 but life will be difficult for those without settled status from 1st November 2019. If the government can move the goalposts on this, what else are they going to change.

I would like to apologise, to those affected, for this absolute shit shower of a government.

pointythings · 18/08/2019 19:21

Camomila I'm one of those who has more than 5 years NI contribution, and I didn't have to send anything off. It was straightforward, and linking my DDs' status to mine was also straightforward. However, if the .gov website is to be believed, every EU citizen settled here will have to send their passport off to the Home Office every time it is renewed. That sounds like a pretty hostile environment to me, and it's also contrary to the lies told promises made previously.

StockTakeFucks · 18/08/2019 19:30

Ulver that's why I decided to apply as soon as I could(had to renew my passport first) despite the "generous " deadlines. I applied in May and what with checking this, checking that, sending passport, uploading document, it took until August to have a decision.

And the app is still not available on iPhones and won't work on older android devices.

Camomila · 18/08/2019 19:32

Luckily Italy allows dual citizenship so I will save up and naturalize. I don't fancy posting my passport anywhere!

I really want DH to get his Italian up to B1 standard so he can get an Italian passport too but he's a lot more relaxed about Brexit than I am. I would just feel a lot better if the whole family had 2 passports to cover all eventualities.

Ohflippineck · 18/08/2019 19:35

Some people are surprised/shocked by this because?

Hoppinggreen · 18/08/2019 19:38

camomila DH and the DC have dual nationality but I can only get it if we move there for 5 years and I don’t think that’s practical unfortunately

pointythings · 18/08/2019 19:41

I'm Dutch - no dual citizenship for us. As things stand, we all agree that we'd rather leave than naturalise. This isn't the country I moved to in 1997. Sad

Camomila · 18/08/2019 19:54

That's a shamed hopping, Italy is very relaxed about nationality, you just have to be married for a certain amount of time, not have a criminal record, and speak intermediate Italian but you don't have to live there.

sigh...I really love/loved being part of the EU. Not just practically, but on an emotional level.

Ulverstonian · 18/08/2019 19:55

@pointy

I’m fuming because changing the goalposts like this isn’t fair - fairness is supposed to be a British value isn’t it. Horrified by the behaviour of my government over this. I don’t like the racism that is coming to the surface either.
