How is this even workable?

Ulverstonian I am actually also pretty hacked off at the Dutch government for its parochial stance on dual nationality. We live in a big world now. The Dutch need to grow up about this.

Myriade · 18/08/2019 21:08

I agree with some PP.
Because I haven’t trusted any uk government since the start if brexit, I have applied as dois as I could. When the app was still in trial. I’ve had no issue getting the SS. As many other eu citizens.
Yes SOME people have had to submit more information but fut many others, it has been a two hours wait to get a positive answer. So many more people could apply now and be protected by the SS by 31st October.

I personally think that not applying as soon as poss and believing whatever the government said was/is naive. But then I have no trust at all in the British political system. And I have a tendency to plan for the worst...,

StockTakeFucks · 18/08/2019 21:10

The issue is some people would've got SS by dec 2020 but won't by October because they don't have enough years. They might get pre settled , and then rely on the government keeping their word and allowing it with no issues when they do make up the years.

I have no faith though.

Myriade · 18/08/2019 21:13

FWIW I can get dual citizenship but if I couldn’t, I would do like some PP. I would leave rather than stay in the uk. (I might well still do tbh)

The uk has changed but more importantly before brexit, England was home for me. It’s not anymore. It’s where I live which is VERY different.
Anywhere I go now, I am ‘OTHER’. A foreigner. Different and therefore someone who doesnt belong there.
And I don’t even have a bit of paper to prove I am entitled to stay Hmm :(

Myriade · 18/08/2019 21:15

Yep the pre SS is more than uncertain.

The Windrush people are the proof that trusting the British government can be dangerous.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2019 21:55

To change the goalposts like this at basically two months notice shows that there can not be any trust that EU citizens will be treated with any sense of fairness.

MadCatEnthusiast · 19/08/2019 02:46

I’m Dutch too and I wouldn’t at all trade my Dutch passport for a British one if I’m being treated like this. If I was able to leave my studies and just return to the Netherlands, I would but I can’t due to this shituation

The Dutch were considering allowing dual nationality for those living in the UK affected by brexit but, decided in the end, not to.

MadCatEnthusiast · 19/08/2019 02:46

Situation*

lonelyplanetmum · 19/08/2019 06:57

Anywhere I go now, I am ‘OTHER’. A foreigner. Different and therefore someone who doesnt belong there.

I am so sorry and understand that you and others feel like this. Also So angry this has happened.

I know your feelings are feelings ...but please remember that for 16 million people ( well in fact far more than this) you are not other, you are local, and you do belong here.

We can't let the true ' other' ie the xenophobic, small minded , Tommy Robinson, Faragist, right wing, whatever win. You and we must reinforce the stand point that millions of us do want those born in EU and in other places to live here.

BeardedMum · 19/08/2019 07:58

@lonelyplanetmum, that is true but it’s the dark side currently winning. They seem unstoppable.

cherin · 19/08/2019 09:02

This is insane. Half of my colleagues haven’t even started the application because by going closer to the deadline they could meet settled instead of pre-settled status....(some didn’t even start because of sheer ignorance, one just married a Brit and thought that’s be enough).
Priti is not he sharpest tool in the toolbox, clearly she must know this is unworkable, on top of everything there’s also a mid term holiday around the same dates, many families travel around those days, I can’t believe she wants to see Heathrow and all airports clogged up for security checks that last half a day....
So, assuming that’s not what she wants, what does she want? Is that part of the posturing that BJ is trying to get the EU to budge? Th Eu is not going to budge...the majority of the problems will affect the U.K. if they impose this, they’re not going to get teachers and doctors and engineers with their Eu passports back on time to the workplace on Nov the 1st, but the Eu countries can decide an opposite policy for the Brits abroad...
If that is the style of posturing, combining the threat of renegading the promise on citizen rights AND not paying the divorce bill....elegant posturing, uh?? I thought the days of pirates and buccaneers were over...I must have been wrong! Who’s going to want to trade and negotiate with this government??

Songsofexperience · 19/08/2019 09:37

I thought the days of pirates and buccaneers were over

Yes, this constant wanton destruction has made me think of them as pirates for the last few weeks. Pillagers and pyromaniacs the lot of them.

StockTakeFucks · 19/08/2019 09:38

Reading the article again, can they actually do it though? It sounds as if they plan to use some kind of back door to put this in place,to avoid opposition, but is it actually possible or just grand standing?

cherin · 19/08/2019 09:43

The certain effect is that EU nationals are grewing tired and frustrated and might as well give the U.K. the middle finger.
I think a collective action to sue the government for undue effects on mental heath (of both remainers and Eu) would be justified....

Songsofexperience · 19/08/2019 09:55

Their definition of strength is your definition of cruelty.
The thing is, it's been pathetically easy for them so they will get harder and meaner because they can. Typical abusive behaviour.

AgeOfAquarius · 19/08/2019 10:01

I am a citizen of another EU country who has lived and worked in the UK for over 20 years but never saw the need to apply for UK citizenship as it would have meant giving up my own.

I applied for settled status about 4 weeks ago. I used the app on a friend's Android phone to scan my biometric passport etc. I then completed the application online. That process took about 20 minutes and I received email confirmation that settled status had been granted about 6 hours later.

My understanding is that it is linked to the passport that you used to apply with, so you will need to travel with that document and also update the information when the passport is renewed.

So I would hope that my settled status will be shown when my passport is scanned on entry to the UK.

Myriade · 19/08/2019 10:02

@lonelyplanetmum, I think it depends on where you live.

I’m in the NE, an area that voted to Leave by about 60%. People i meet for the first time now ask me where I’m coming from within 2~3 mins meeting me. If I dare speak in French to my dcs in public, people just stare at me until we or they have left.
Things have gone worse in the last 6 months or so.

I can believe this is not the case if you are in a strong Remain area. But from where I am.....

AgeOfAquarius · 19/08/2019 10:05

By the way I posted this not because I agree with any of it, but to hopefully allay some fears around the process.

I was just glad to get it out of the way so that I could stop worrying about it.

Myriade · 19/08/2019 10:05

As for the current government being cruel etc.... what do you expect?

This is an extreme right government. Pitri Patel has said herself she would be ok with leaving Irish people starve if it’s good for her/the uk.
That sort of behaviour is to be expected imo.

And btw, imo, this is scarily similar to what happened in the 1930s.... I think people would do well to learn a bit more history and look at what is happening now.

Myriade · 19/08/2019 10:08

@AgeOfAquarius, I agree. I did the same way back in January. And for a lot of people it will be as easy as that.

I really think it’s essential to apply for SS NOW, regardless of the fears that it won’t go through etc... (I know I was scared to do it and being faced with sending another mountain of evidence). It’s better than not having anything at all.

StockTakeFucks · 19/08/2019 10:12

I definitely think everyone should apply, and apply now. It's just that for some it won't be so easy and they might have to do some other things, or don't have the years yet ,but they do need to apply.

However I do wonder how many would be caught short for trusting the dec 2020 deadline which is still in place on the gov website.

If I hadn't found this thread I wouldn't have know about these plans for 1st of November.

Myriade · 19/08/2019 10:15

I’m not sure what is the government stance re pre SS but my guess is that it is better than nothing.

Waiting now isn’t a good idea.

AuldAlliance · 19/08/2019 11:17

I realise that some people think that Erasmus students are all rich kids on a gap year, but I send students from very modest homes to the UK every year, where they improve their English and discover UK culture, foster relations and goodwill, etc. I have no idea how/if they will have access to SS and healthcare during their exchanges form now on, especially those set to leave in semester 2.

I appreciate it's minor compared to the concerns of people who've been resident and paying contributions in the UK for years, but it's rather sad collateral damage nonetheless.

Ulverstonian · 19/08/2019 11:30

@MadCatEnthusiast

Shituation sums it up though Smile

lonelyplanetmum · 19/08/2019 12:11

@lonelyplanetmum, that is true but it’s the dark side currently winning. They seem unstoppable.

Well we must not let them win.Although it feels like that in some areas of the country we have to fight back. Join local 48% groups, appropriate political parties etc. In every area of the country in every village there are some people who welcome a French accent or whatever. We must fight back collectively and not let those attitudes win.
