Westminstenders: Charge!!!!

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

I happened to be in a national trust place possessed of a shepherd’s hut thing yesterday. Instant rage thinking of the careless and stupidity of the man who got us into this mess.

These shortages will probably effect those women with an intact uterus because they cannot have oestrogen only HRT.

LurkingHusband · 12/08/2019 09:48

When my glaucoma meds disappeared (although officially they haven't, apparently not being able to source them isn't the same as their not being available) the only alternative was a more risky operation and/or losing the sight in one (or both, if I'm lucky) eyes.

I wonder if hysterectomies will be offered in lieu of medicines too ? If reports are correct they could be a surplus of butchers that could help out ?

Cherin totally agree factories do not magically just open because you need one !

One of my DM (leaver) answers to problems to Brexit was “the industrialists will just have to come back” cue face palming from both myself and DH as we run a small manufacturing business.

We tried to explain you need serious capital invested even for a relatively small concern, suitable premises, harder than it may seem actually (three small industrial estates have been turned into housing near us) and a ready and willing workforce with the necessary skill set near to the premises. That’s before you even look into your supply chain for raw materials and consumables.

None of this happens overnight.

Is there really enough demand in the Uk market to warrant all that effort for chocolate oranges ? I enjoy an occasional chocolate orange at Christmas but could easily live with out.

Mistigri · 12/08/2019 09:55

You give them too much credit to think they even consider Ireland.

They do consider Ireland - to be a British colony where the natives got uppity.

woman19 · 12/08/2019 10:16

Have to admit I am enjoying the clutching of testerial/woke pearls, not on this thread of course, at the thought of a cross party coalition of Women running the country. Smile

Quite right too. It's a disgraceful idea. Whatever next. Shock

TokyoSushi · 12/08/2019 10:24

PMK from my poolside lounger, thanks all for keeping me up to date!

Hoooo · 12/08/2019 10:26

Yep.
Failed coil fitting last week.
Months to wait for gynae appt to get it sorted.
So I'm fucked.

woman19 · 12/08/2019 10:41

That's awful Hoo Flowers

Women seldom get equality in our access to medical care. I do hope that these issues with HRT and our contraceptive rights are resolved soon.

Lisa Nandy is the grand-daughter of a Lord.
Jess Phillips is the daughter of a teacher and NHS Trustee. She started her career working for her parents' company.

Is this how working class background is really defined today?

Clue - Northern accent does not equal working class

tobee · 12/08/2019 10:49

Cor David Gauke's holiday place looked nice! Sort of place you'd imagine a Tory holidaying! Grin

woman19 · 12/08/2019 10:50

At least us pro EU ers have plenty of women to choose from.

I wonder which women Mr Dick Brain and the brexistry, would be happy to cede power to apart from the handful of barking handmaids like stuart and hatekins.

Mistigri · 12/08/2019 11:03

France? Don't ordinary people take holidays there?

Incidentally I thought Gauke's follow up posts of the deflated and then reboxed unicorn were a splendid metaphor for Brexit (we are currently on unicorn stage #2 - hopefully it will get put back in its box in due course), as well as a medal-worthy bit of twitter trolling.

Hoooo · 12/08/2019 11:16

Yeah.
The effects are getting quite debilitating now.

RedToothBrush · 12/08/2019 11:24

Why am I so unsurprised at this?

Tom Tugendhat @TomTugendhat
This headline could read - “Britain chooses to know less about what decisions are influencing nearest neighbours and most important trading partners”. I hope it’s not true.

PMK. Head in hands about Caroline Lucas.

Peregrina · 12/08/2019 11:48

From Red's link:
The prime minister claimed there were “very many brilliant officials trapped in meeting after meeting in Brussels and Luxembourg when they could be better deploying their talents in preparing to pioneer new trade deals and promoting a truly global Britain”.

Of course, all these officials could jump ship and not be available to negotiate trade deals in a 'global' Britain which ignores most of its own Continent. I am 100% sure that they wouldn't be short of good job offers. Then it will be Johnson and his bunch of mediocrities left to negotiate deals. Which will be of the form from the US "Jump", England and Wales "How High?"

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 12/08/2019 11:51

Thanks Red

Totally Confused and Hmm about the Lucas proposal. So the likes of Grieve, Blackford and Clarke would be excluded from any temporary cabinet aiming to stop No Deal. Seems counterproductive and divisive to me.

So, of course, exactly the sort of idea we should have been expecting.

tobee · 12/08/2019 11:56

Mistri I rather meant the seemingly private pool and glimpse of manor house rather than the country. Plus it was meant to be a lighthearted comment. Smile

tobee · 12/08/2019 11:57

Misti not Mistri sorry.

Peregrina · 12/08/2019 11:59

Maybe Lucas's proposal being so totally off the wall, might make people come to their senses and realise that Grieve and Co are the ones we need?

I think I read it on Facebook rather than MN but rumour had it that Johnson, having a narrow majority, might try to jump ship to a safe constituency, and Grieve's constituency was suggested. If that happened, I would hope that Grieve stood against him as an Independent Conservative. If he was allowed to Crowdfund an election campaign I would be willing to bung him a tenner.

Mistigri · 12/08/2019 12:03

Tobee sorry if that seemed snippy ... I wasn't sure if people realised he was in France (obvious from the unicorn toy carton!).

(Though tbh a rented holiday home in France seems like a fairly ordinary holiday, dare I say even downmarket one, for a recently resigned cabinet minister).

Mistigri · 12/08/2019 12:05

I'd donate to support Grieve. He may be a Tory but he is on the right side of history here and while I won't ever agree with some of his political opinions no one can doubt that he is a sincere and honest politician.

I'd love to see him stand against Johnson as a remain alliance candidate. And while we are on that subject if the remain alliance were really capable of putting aside party politics, they would unilaterally stand down in seats held by remain Labour MPs.

DGRossetti · 12/08/2019 12:06

The UK is learning - the hard way - what McCarthyism must have been like.

Also BJ pulling diplomats from Brussels has a faint whiff of Hitler insisting the Allies were going to invade from Calais, and building up strength there, at the expense of Normandy ....
