Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

I've been thinking the same Mother

notjustanexpat · 31/07/2019 16:07

@bellinisurge Thanks, I might! I grew up canning everything my gran could get her hands on so I am not too worried about it. In normal circumstances I just couldn't justify a pressure canner, especially as I prefer water-bath canning. DH survives on a 50-70% meat diet though, which is why I am thinking about it. Question, though, would be whether he'd eat the canned meat. He is a very picky eater and there is no way of knowing until we try it.

bellinisurge · 31/07/2019 16:11

@notjustanexpat , I have canned loads of chilli because we like it. I've also canned "ugly chicken " , as in it looks dreadful but it is poached and canned. I will admit that , unlike the chilli, we haven't touched it -yet.
Importing a pressure canner is an expensive business and the jars are not as readily available as in, say, the US.
But it is addictive Grin

I have this order coming on Tuesday. Might as well get the basics sorted if nothing else for now.

Nice one.

BlackeyedGruesome · 31/07/2019 18:01

Meh, already got an additional 16 tins of baked beans stashed.

Protein and veg in one tin.

BlackeyedGruesome · 31/07/2019 18:02

Sorry, was just channeling my inner five year old. Blush

NoWordForFluffy · 31/07/2019 18:06

We still have some, but I'm topping up!

BlackeyedGruesome · 01/08/2019 09:53

I really really really need to check my stash. Going under the stairs today to look for something I have lost and need urgently. That will be fun.

Wolfcubisthefemalenominal · 01/08/2019 09:55

Tinned toms and falafel mix coming today to top up my stash. Six bottles of method shower cleaner arrived last night

Cloudtree · 01/08/2019 10:02

Falafel mix disappearing in this house as soon as I buy it! Its a massive hit with the teens.

AutumnCrow · 01/08/2019 10:18

I've reorganised and inventoried everything and done a colour-coded 'best before' date index, cross-referenced to storage box numbers. It cheered me right up it did.

OH and DS joined in, it was fun. They got to take the piss out of me about (a) the tinned sprouts, and (b) meat paste.

BlackeyedGruesome · 01/08/2019 23:35

FFS. Pulling out part of the stash and hoovering. Got clothes eating larvae in the flat. Lots of hoovering, counting and restashing going to go on.

BlackeyedGruesome · 01/08/2019 23:37

They have got between the layers of folded mattress on the sofa bed so all furniture being pulled out and hoovered behind.

AutumnCrow · 01/08/2019 23:43

Aagh nightmare @Blackeyed. Spray & hoover, spray & hoover. For us it was fleas three weeks ago.

Cackleweb · 01/08/2019 23:51

Tinned...sprouts...

I mean, I guess they'll last - in the same way dwarf bread lasts in the Discworld because no bugger will eat it.

Tinned...sprouts...

BlackeyedGruesome · 02/08/2019 01:35

Tinned sprouts will be useful... If left in the tin and used as a weapon to repel borders.

I actually love sprouts in really spicy chillies - they weirdly go great with cayenne pepper. In my opinion, I have yet to successfully convince someone to give it a try Grin

I caved and ordered a travel bidet. Travel bidet + cheeky wipes to dry everything off is the ultimate solution if you don't have the space to stash massive amounts of toilet paper! One of those things I never thought I'd say...

Quorn just rolled out falafel strips that can be stored at room temperature. Have yet to try them but sounds like a good thing to have around.

Socksontheradiator · 02/08/2019 10:42

I might just get a tin of sprouts and see if it is possible to jazz them up, based on your post @notjustanexpat. The thing that tinned vegs are least good for is heating them up and tipping them on a plate. But there are cunning ways to make them edible Smile
I have a son in law who is big on hunting and foraging. We have a bit more money and space so have stocked up more, so we plan to combine our resources if necessary.

Today was nearly freezer stash failure day - I went to get some frozen oven chips out and realised they weren't quite as frozen as they should be. Went back to the (very new) freezer and the lights were off. Aaarrggggh. A few checks and it became apparent the fuse in the extension lead had gone, but it can only have been an hour or so earlier as my stocks were still pretty frozen. The only casualty was the ice cream! Heaving a HUGE sigh of relief because I thought a) everything is defrosted and lost and b) new freezer has gone poof!

bellinisurge · 02/08/2019 11:26

I had this years ago before my dd was born and all my lovely meals were ruined Confused

PhantomErik · 02/08/2019 11:53

Not quite a brexit stash but while thinking about preparing for dd starting secondary school (sept 2020) I'm waiting for the sales of 'back to school' stuff, stationery in particular!

CrunchyCarrot · 02/08/2019 12:10

That's a shame, bellini.

It's happened to us before after a lengthy power outage many years ago, it does suck having to throw all that good stuff out (even if you can cook some and refreeze, it's usually impractical to try to cook everything). We did get some money back via contents insurance, though.

PhantomErik yes that's a good point! I could do with getting more printer ink too.

My free trial of Who Gives A Crap is arriving today. Mum has got hers. We keep drinking the orange juice Blush
