Hunt won't withdraw and he'll probably get to stay Foreign Secretary regardless. This way they get to have the conversation on Brexit with the 160,000 and at least attempt to heal the dislocation between Conservative MPs and Membership.

wheresmymojo · 20/06/2019 18:34

Oh and I'm under 65 too....a mere child at 36 compared to the average age.

I shall report back from hustings to tell you what they say when only party members are listening... I may need to don a disguise as I'm not sure I'll blend in well Wink

howabout · 20/06/2019 18:35

Britain Elects:
"Michael Gove has been eliminated" Grin

Basilpots · 20/06/2019 18:41

One of the ladies at my gym joined the local Conservative club for the ‘dating opportunities’ Wheres she is in her fifties and say she is definitely one of the younger ones.

Says she never been busier ....

onalongsabbatical · 20/06/2019 18:42

wheresmymojo I love you, you're a bloody heroine. Talk about above and beyond the call of duty!

Ellie56 · 20/06/2019 18:44

One of the ladies at my gym joined the local Conservative club for the ‘dating opportunities’ Hmm

Is she that desperate?

BigChocFrenzy · 20/06/2019 18:45

< admires the twirl > If you attend the hustings, I hope you take anti-nausea meds in advance

Peregrina · 20/06/2019 18:47

Doesn't it depend on what the lady in question wants? Someone nice and rich who can keep her in the style she wants to be accustomed?

Basilpots · 20/06/2019 18:47

She actually very lovely she says most of them are pretty normal they do a lot of social stuff locally but it’s the best way to meet single gentleman of a certain age apparently.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/06/2019 18:49

" heal the dislocation between Conservative MPs and Membership." ?

Nope ! Grin

Give it a few months and they'll be baying for blood,
either calling MPs out for treason, for delaying Brexit again,
or Boris for not producing the promised unicorn

Basilpots · 20/06/2019 18:49

Peregrina she is self financing but pretty lonely since losing her husband we are pretty rural so meeting folk can be a task.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/06/2019 18:50

"single gentleman of a certain age"

Batshitters aged 72+

Tanith · 20/06/2019 18:55

How very odd! I posted this on the Westministenders threads exactly a year ago:

Jeremy Hunt isn’t a Muslim. If he becomes PM, he can select his own Chancellor.
He is a Remainer who has voted with the Government ever since (and before) the Referendum.
He also has a long history of being put in places to do other people’s dirty work and take the flack.
He’s carefully kept his nose clean and his head down. He’s also said he’s not at all interested in being PM, so that practically guarantees him as a candidate.

I also saw this at the weekend:
www.opendemocracy.net/en/dark-money-investigations/revealed-climate-change-denier-makes-big-donation-boris-johnson-and-jeremy-hunt/

BigChocFrenzy · 20/06/2019 18:58

BJ gerrymandering, to face the less dangerous opponent ? Hmm

If so, unethical imo

Dom Walsh@DomWalsh13

Pretty hard to believe that only 3 Javid voters went to Johnson, not least when 5 Javid MPs publicly declared that they were switching to him.

Skullduggery / tactical voting seems highly likely
....
Nick Boles MPP@NickBoles*

Now there’s a surprise... who would ever think Gavin Williamson would do a thing like that?

< an ex-Tory who doesn't think much of the new gang in town.
I wonder how many moderate current MPs think likewise
and would vote NC if No Deal seems otherwise inevitable ? Hmm >

BigChocFrenzy · 20/06/2019 19:02

Hunt supported racist tweets by Haty Hopkins & Trump against Khan

He is as much of an unscrupulous, opportunist shit as BJ

They both thought Remain would win the ref;
they just positioned themselves differently to benefit from that

Peregrina · 20/06/2019 19:07

She actually very lovely she says most of them are pretty normal they do a lot of social stuff locally but it’s the best way to meet single gentleman of a certain age apparently.

I think a lot of the local Tories are perfectly decent people who do a lot of social things and believe in doing their bit for the community. I think a lot don't question and would be horrified to realise just how far to the right the party has lurched.

Then of course, their numbers do include the hang em and flog em types.

thethethethethe · 20/06/2019 19:09

To be fair to the BBC, there's been loads of stuff on Radio 4 about how bad Boris Johnson is. Today his ex-boss was on, saying that he's a megalomaniac, and is incapable of caring about anyone except himself.
So the Tory MPs and the Tory membership are unlikely not to know what a nasty piece of work he is. They are deliberately putting a dangerous, power-mad bastard in charge of the country, and at such a critical time.
Is their plan to assume that he'll be used as a puppet by politicians they like (even if only because he's so lazy)? That was what people in the US hoped about Trump, and that hasn't turned out too well.
My fear (among many) is that his puppet-masters will be from outside the UK.

The last 2 each have to pay Tory HQ £125k for the hustings

Only the wealthy need apply

The modern Tory party

LonelyTiredandLow · 20/06/2019 19:30

On BBC Kent this morning the head of the Canterbury Tories was suggesting that the party wouldn't elect someone untrustworthy Hmm - seemed to be intimating that they won't be choosing Boris. I couldn't decide in my coffee deprived state who he was trying to convince. Now makes me wonder if they will vote in the underdog again. To be honest, they are all such a bunch of back-stabbing bastards I don't think any of them know what will happen. V. interesting both are being funded by the climate change deniers though; shows who is really in charge.

SecretToryMole · 20/06/2019 19:32

Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster on these threads. I'm another one that became a member of the Conservative party a few months ago when a leadership election was becoming more and more apparent on the horizon.

I've name changed as I'll be leaving after the election (and promptly joining the Labour Party in the hope of another leadership contest in the not too distant future...Wink)

However, I really don't know the best (or rather, least horrifyingly awful) option!

Hunt, slithery doctor-basher, ruthlessly ambitious but at least probably not quite so embarrassing on the international stage (at least he doesn't seem to have fucked up Foreign Secretary too much).

Or Boris - in the hope of his incompetence leading to a NC vote and bringing down the Tories and hopefully get him out of policies forever? Or even the slimmest chance that he might revoke and somehow manage to convince Leavers that they agree with him?

That's if the country is still standing in a few weeks of course...

So WWYD?

thethethethethe · 20/06/2019 19:38

I wouldn't exactly call Hunt competent - threatening China with imaginary warships is not a great move? Especially when the country is completely desperate for a trade deal?
I suspect that they're much of a muchness - will be controlled by far right foreign interests. Maybe Hunt has slightly more self-control, so less likely to do something completely barking mad, but the mistake with China is worrying.
I suppose the benefit of Johnson is that people can't easily claim that he is not a true leaver.
