Alex Wickham@alexwickham
Get the feeling the BBC thought two candidates would be knocked out today leaving them with a less crowded debate... and then their format was ruined by five getting thru

TheABC · 18/06/2019 21:22

I am glad I am not one of the chosen faithful called to pick between them.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/06/2019 21:25

Looks like most of the public still forgive Boris for his outbursts 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yes, we get the politicians we deserve

YouGovv@YouGov*

Boris Johnson speaking of his remarks over the years
"...I'm sorry for the offence that they have caused".

Our survey looking at apologies and non-apologies indicates that around 60% likely consider this to be a 'proper' apology

Rory won't go any further now, he seemed quite frustrated and bolshy tonight. Now's not his time but he could be one to watch in the future.
I surprised myself by warming to Jeremy Hunt more than I'd have thought. He seemed calm and sensible.

borntobequiet · 18/06/2019 21:26

Given the two-step horror that is Trump/Brexit, sensible and moderate politicians should be looking at how to manage the aftermath.
Rory Stewart in this country, Pete Buttigieg in the US, who else, where? Macron is in the middle ground but is not really a moderate, is he? Who in Germany (Angela Merkel was unwell today, I heard reported)?
Just rambling really, on a sugar high after eating too many chocolate biscuits to cope with the stress of watching that so-called debate.

IAmNoAngel · 18/06/2019 21:27

I do like Emily, but the position at the side seemed to take away her authority somewhat. Would have loved them to have faced Andrew Neil instead (bet BJ wouldn't have showed for that!)

I'm another tory who will be voting for 'the one that isn't Boris' in the final two.

Iggly · 18/06/2019 21:27

It’s a disgrace.

He’s directly responsible for Nazanin being held for far too long in that Iranian jail.

Fucking wanker.

TheAngryLlama · 18/06/2019 21:29

I heard it on the radio rather than watched. Boris was all bluff and bluster, made no sense. Maitlis clearly hates him. Hunt sounded like a robot. Stewart sounded the most coherent. He and gove are the most intelligent.

notangelinajolie · 18/06/2019 21:33

Well that was fun. I'm going out for wine now so a quick list of my thoughts in no particular order,

Rory Stewart is in the wrong party.
Emily Maitlis was dreadful.
Where did Rory Stewart's tie go?
Why could he not sit on his chair?
Giving my vote to Boris.

RedToothBrush · 18/06/2019 21:36

No one has really said much about performance on twitter tonight.

I'm guessing Stewart and Javid out tomorrow and Thursday with the big showdown between Hunt and Gove on Friday.

And I think you have to probably favour Hunt in that tbh.

PMK

Rory's having a pop at Twitter. Hah.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/06/2019 21:40

BJ says just what an increasingly rightwing Tory party wants to hear

  • he would also say just what a leftwing Remainy Tory party want - if they had swung that way instead
He doesn't do principles, just opportunism

Will he call a GE before the public rumbles him - if they ever do ?

Basilpots · 18/06/2019 21:42

Think they’ve probably managed to drive a few more away to other parties tonight wonder if the next set of polls will reflect that.

No way will they go for an election after inept performance.

LemonGingerCakes · 18/06/2019 21:44

What is PMK?

yolofish · 18/06/2019 21:44

jesus... what a shower of shits. The only one with any kind of sense was Rory the Tory, and we all know he won't go through.

BoZo - was he pissed?
Cunt - still is one, no change there
Saj - smart move on the Islamophobia/root it out of the party
Gove - still obnoxious, but I think poss has some sort of brain which qualifies him over the rest
Rory - far too sensible, needs to learn to not manspread quite so blatantly

BigChocFrenzy · 18/06/2019 21:44

I despise Hunt
He is nearly as opportunistic as BJ

Even if he is now backing away from his support for the latest Trump / Haty Hopkins Islamophobic rants against Khan
He supported them when either he thought it might help him, or he genuinely is Islamophobic too

If the Tory party ever hold that Islamophobia inquiry, they can start with him

borntobequiet · 18/06/2019 21:47

PMK is placemarking

Basilpots · 18/06/2019 21:48

Only positive was agreement that an outside investigation into Islamaphobia looks to be on the cards. Hope Saj and Baroness Warsi makes them stick to it.

TokyoSushi · 18/06/2019 21:50

I was just reading that the vote tomorrow has the result at 6pm and then on Thursday theres possibly two, a result at 1pm and then if necessary the final result, probably Johnson/Hunt/Gove at 6pm

RedToothBrush · 18/06/2019 22:09

The award for the tweet if the night goes to this:

Hicham Yezza @hichamyezza
“My Muslim great-grandfather” pleads Boris Johnson. “My three half-Chinese kids” retorts Jeremy Hunt. “My parents were Muslim” wails Sajid Javid. “Assalamu-Alaikoum” shouts Rory Stewart. “Jeremy Corbyn is Satan” screams Michael Gove.

What a circus.

#BBCOurNextPM

And yes, all are verbatim quotes — except Gove’s, which may have been slightly paraphrased...

OP posts:
Tanith · 18/06/2019 22:17

SkyNews are claiming another comfortable victory for Boris. He looked anything but comfortable perched on that chair imo.

Tanith · 18/06/2019 22:19

Oh, and of course Boris didn't forget Abdullah's name. That was quite deliberate.

LouiseCollins28 · 18/06/2019 22:26

Been out tonight so watching on catch up. Emily referring to candidates as “the rest” is hardly setting a promising tOne

notangelinajolie · 18/06/2019 22:28

Rory is out and he knows it. Taking his tie off was the give away. His body language was all wrong. He almost wasn't in the room - his back was turned on the others and his feet were on the floor ready to go. He was the first to stand when it was all over. At one stage I actually thought he was going to throw his tie in the ring.

ElenadeClermont · 18/06/2019 22:33

John Crace called them the reunion of an ageing boy band, Take Twat.
