Westministenders: Hustings and Humilation

Round 1 has passed.
Boris is winning. But these are the Tories. Surprises might yet happen.

But the chances are the lying buffon is full speed ahead to be the next PM. As long as he manages to keep his mouth shut.

Unfortunately being Prime Minister involves talking. This might prove to be something that bursts the BorisMania rather rapidly.

A GE is still very much on the cards.

And we might face the Constitutional and undemocratic shutting down of parliament to satisfy the Tory Faithless.

Meanwhile the EU couldn't give less shits. They just think we are wasting the time we were granted in good faith.

31st October beckons with No Deal.

The HoC Committee on Standards in Public Life set out the 7 principles that MPs are supposed to follow:

Selflessness, Integrity, Objectivity, Accountability, Openness, Honesty and Leadership

Sajid Javid or Dominic Raab expected to be knocked out of Tory leadership contest tomorrow as rival camps say renegade Rory Stewart has now stormed past them

Sajid Javid or Dominic Raab expected to be knocked out of Tory leadership fight as support for Rory Stewart surges

Having long been written off as a rank outsider, the Development Secretary goes into this afternoon’s vote with all rival campaigns thinking he is safe.

And

Home Secretary Sajid Javid and former Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab were both last night locked in a desperate struggle to stay in the race last night.

Sources close to both strugglers insisted it was touch and go whether they would meet the 33 vote threshold.

And

Mr Javid’s campaign was seen by others to be in the deepest trouble.

One source on his campaign source told The Sun that he needs “at least half the mights and maybes” to vote for him today or he’ll be out.

And

Michael Gove noticeably eased off on his attacks on Boris yesterday, leading some to accuse him of surrendering.

Another rival source said: “It looks like Michael is trying to make his peace with Boris.

“He’s clearly realised he’s no longer putting on numbers so needs to change tack and think about a good job”.

Article also thinks Boris is up to 130 votes.

Sam Lowe@SamuelMarcLowe

If you want a Canada-style FTA with the EU for Great Britain, the NI-specific backstop is how you do it.
.....

Tony Gallagher@tgeducation

Speculation that Boris Johnston might offer to ditch the UK backstop, but retain the NI backstop, to cut a deal with the EU.

The DUP would go apoplectic, but he might offer a NI referendum on this to outflank them.

Odd times.

Hunt sinks even lower - agrees with Trump's & Hopkins' continued racist hounding of London Mayor

So, in summary, the only person in government who has defended our mayor from the explicit racism of the US president has been Sajid Javid, the only Muslim cabinet minister.

Let's remember this the next time they're canvassing for votes in temples and mosques.

Vomit-inducing.

Margaret Goldwater worked with Sanger to produce the forerunner of Planned Parenthood

math I know Sanger was the activist, but imo Goldwater's political clout was important to make it all happen
She remained involved and was on the board of PP in Arizona

She formally opened birth control & family planning clinics - difficult to imagine the wife of a leading GOP politician doing that now
BCF

There was one specific clinic in Arizona that Margaret Johnson Goldwater founded. It later merged with the already existing (almost) nationwide Planned Parenthood organisation that Sanger had been working to set up.

This was back in the days when mainstream protestantism was a very popular religious umbrella, and it supported 'family planning'.

The emergence of fundamentalist protestant groups and denominations since the 1960s has fractured protestant or bible based organised religion into liberal and conservative branches.

I agree that the GOP has veered pretty far into social conservatism and also into economic libertarianism and that anyone in that party who wanted an election campaign to be funded would have to be acceptable to the fundamentalists (with the caveat that very blue states tend to have GOP reps if they have any at all, who are less right wing than they tend to be in red states).

mathanxiety · 18/06/2019 04:42

BCF
Would he have still brought in those Civil Rights laws if he'd known that much of the white Southern vote, previously such a key group in getting Democrats elected, would be lost permanently ?

It's not permanently lost yet Wink

I think yes. He pushed ahead with Vietnam despite knowing that war was not winnable. He was an incredibly pig headed man who rarely backed down.

lonelyplanetmum · 18/06/2019 06:54

Just catching up and read about Hunt endorsing Katie Hopkins ( always a mistake to give her oxygen and why is she still a thing anyway).

Also a bit ironic that Hunt puts ' failure to tackle knife crime' 100% down to the mayor?

It's nothing to do with the government's policies then? Nothing to do with cuts to government budgets made available for policing? Nothing to do with government funding for education, help for families, community initiatives etc etc.

frumpety · 18/06/2019 07:06

Simon Blagden, Conservative party donor , allegedly going to get job in DIT, via a seat in the Lords.

NoWordForFluffy · 18/06/2019 07:11

Hunt sinks even lower - agrees with Trump's & Hopkins' continued racist hounding of London Mayor.

And yet he hates being called a cunt. If you don't want to be called one, don't act like one maybe? 🤷‍♀️

LonelyTiredandLow · 18/06/2019 07:20

lonely it's another way to try to gain backing from US. All candidates are aware Tory party has lost funding and all are aware Brexit will mean we have to align with US. Now it's about ensuring the party electing them they can brown nose the people we'll need to keep on side over the pond. 'We be dere bitches now bro'.

NoYo · 18/06/2019 07:27

Rory Stewart is as Tory as they come, going by his voting record. I don't understand all the love for him. 🤔

Westministenders: Hustings and Humilation
Basilpots · 18/06/2019 07:36

noyo as ever he’s the least worse.

Notice Telegraph have ‘accused’ Stewart of allegedly being in Mi6.

And that will go down badly with the Tory membership because.....

BigChocFrenzy · 18/06/2019 07:41

NoYo It's the Tory leadership contest, so of course they all support Tory policies

However, Rory is the one standing out against No Deal and he is the most moderate Tory
Raab, Boris, Hunt are particularly vile in being / supporting the hard right

IrenetheQuaint · 18/06/2019 07:43

Absolutely hilarious that the Telegraph thinks Rory having probably been in MI6 is somehow damaging to him. Surely all right-wingers love our dubious security services and fantasise breathlessly about serving in them?

RedToothBrush · 18/06/2019 07:48

They are trying to make out he is part of the
liberal elite and an agent of the civil service to undermine democracy (think along the lines of military coup).

This might work with the thinking of some tory party members. To us it sounds nonsense because it is.
