Westministenders: Hustings and Humilation

Round 1 has passed.
Boris is winning. But these are the Tories. Surprises might yet happen.

But the chances are the lying buffon is full speed ahead to be the next PM. As long as he manages to keep his mouth shut.

Unfortunately being Prime Minister involves talking. This might prove to be something that bursts the BorisMania rather rapidly.

A GE is still very much on the cards.

And we might face the Constitutional and undemocratic shutting down of parliament to satisfy the Tory Faithless.

Meanwhile the EU couldn't give less shits. They just think we are wasting the time we were granted in good faith.

31st October beckons with No Deal.

@howabout

Most non-ERG Tories want a deal - many may be Remainers at heart but they know that only a deal will save the party... so they aren’t going to champion motions or actions that might undermine that, such as giving Labour a free pass to be Government for the day.

The likes of Rudd and Clarke, and May even, will strain every sinew to get that deal. It is only
when the prospects of a deal have disappeared beyond any conceivable doubt that I would expect them to act.... Only then will they calculate that voting down the Government is the only option left to them. If this is to occur it will happen at the 11th hour.... They will be in no rush to do this, much to the enormous frustration of many.

howabout · 19/06/2019 19:04

I'll believe it when I see it Oakenbach

Oakenbeach · 19/06/2019 19:33

We will indeed! No one really knows.

The only thing that is virtually certain is that we’re in for a messy, fractious political rollercoaster over the coming months the like of which we won’t have seen in our lifetimes. Buckle up!

Oakenbeach · 19/06/2019 19:34

And it will make the first six months of the year appear like a picnic.

Clavinova · 19/06/2019 19:50

We might be picnicking on Ukrainian sandwiches;

Oakenbeach · 19/06/2019 20:01

The real issue here is that there is no credible opposition. I don't understand why Labour is still saddled with him??

Yes, it’s amazing how untouchable he seems given the incredible level of open dissent.

Apileofballyhoo · 19/06/2019 20:02

DH read on Twitter that Gavin Williamson was doing the rounds asking Boris supporters to lend their vote to Sajid Javid for this round in order to get rid of Rory as Boris was annoyed at the attention he was getting. Interesting.

Some good news for British beef exporters;

British beef is bound for China, following a series of inspections by Chinese officials, in a deal worth an estimated £230m over the next five years.

"Market access for UK beef exporters was secured for the end of 2019" ... "following more than 20 years after the Chinese government imposed a ban on UK imports of beef in 1996, as a result of BSE."

"The announcement is fantastic news for our meat processors who are set to benefit massively from the opportunities this agreement presents," said Dr Phil Hadley, international market development director at AHDB.

...and terrible for the environment.. once again SFA to do with Brexit, not quite sure why you post these non brexit deals?

Clavinova · 19/06/2019 20:13

asking Boris supporters to lend their vote to Sajid Javid

Yes, I heard that rumour as well - although I thought Sajid Javid did very well last night - unlike Rory Stewart who was fidgety and very unimpressive.

LonelyTiredandLow · 19/06/2019 20:34

Plus our food and agri standards are still at EU level...not for long if we need to align with USA. I'd be doubtful there isn't some sort of caveat to the 'China Beef Deal'.

Clavinova · 19/06/2019 20:37

jasjas1973

The farming industry is very relevant to Brexit.

and terrible for the environment
Spain and Germany are major suppliers of pork to China...

LonelyTiredandLow · 19/06/2019 20:46

Did we ever find out what was going to happen with the slurry if we No Deal? I strongly suspect we have no plan for that; sensing another epizootic shortly thereafter we crash out.

Maybe we'll ship it to NI to dump like our nuclear waste?

jasjas1973 · 19/06/2019 20:51

Clav

The UK farming industry is a tiny part of our 2 trillion economy.

Meat production is going to have to dramatically reduce if the UK is going to come anywhere nr its carbon reduction targets.
What other countries do is irrelevant, the world is screwed if we always wait for someone else to do something.

Clavinova · 19/06/2019 21:00

jasjas1973
The next time a remainer mentions farming/farmers on this forum I shall refer them to you. Grin

jasjas1973 · 19/06/2019 21:07

Clav

The point is this deal is tiny and has happened whilst IN the EU, these are brexit threads, so if you have links to trade deals that have occured only because of Brexit, lets see them.

Should we diverge from EU standards on chemicals allowed in meat production, the danger is, even this v small deal will come unstuck.

However, one valid reason to leave the EU is the CAP, it really is a terrible policy esp how the UK interpretations it.

Icantreachthepretzels · 19/06/2019 21:15

The likes of Rudd and Clarke, and May even, will strain every sinew to get that deal. It is only when the prospects of a deal have disappeared beyond any conceivable doubt that I would expect them to act

If I were Theresa May I would take great delight in voting no confidence in a Boris Government.

pointythings · 19/06/2019 21:19

Woohoo, £40-odd million pounds a year. That will go a very long way towards replacing everything the UK will lose in a no deal Brexit.

Hmm
derxa · 19/06/2019 21:32

...and terrible for the environment.. once again SFA to do with Brexit, not quite sure why you post these non brexit deals?
Oh give up.
I actually know Patsy hunter who wrote that article and the editor of The Scottish Farmer. The thing is we're resourceful and optimistic people. We won't give up. It's the highland show this week. We're showing. Patsy will be there doing her reports. She's been through a hellish time.

HateIsNotGood · 19/06/2019 21:35

With regards to Animal Welfare standards and Agriculture - I'm happy to hear about another EU country that had better standards than the UK prior to the EU settingimposing EU standards unilaterally.

I'd say the same about Aviation too.

Anyway, Rory's out - he'd never make the final Tory cut as all he did was resay what TM said/tried to do. I heard today (R4) that some Labour MPs regretted not voting for TM's WA...well, no good plaining after the horse has bolted is it?

jasjas1973 · 19/06/2019 21:38

Derxa -why does that change the facts? her personal life isn't being discussed here nor is of interest.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/06/2019 21:57

I very much want to keep Uk farming and agriculture

Few people are going to give up eating meat or dairy
whether for the environment or for animal welfare

At least if it's produced in the UK, we can legally control welfare standards and meat quality for consumers

BigChocFrenzy · 19/06/2019 21:59

I eat local produce and support local farmers as much as possible

(although my "local" is now in Germany")

BigChocFrenzy · 19/06/2019 22:15

That's not just for ethical reasons:

Animals raised in poor conditions, e.g. in the massive US industrialised farming industry, pumped with hormones,
will produce meat with inferior nutrients / food value compared to animals raised by farmers who care for them and look after them properly

That is now thought to be the reason why so many US studies show worrying longterm health effects of eating quite normal amounts of meat, whereas European-based studies don't

Predominantly grass-fed, free range meat, as recommended by US low carb gurus like Atkins, is the norm In UK / Europe

jasjas1973 · 19/06/2019 22:26

We can't produce the meat we want with free range, we need factory farming or get them to stop breeding so many animals and grow plants for more plant based protein products.

Farmers, on the whole, voted for brexit, we ll probably get a no-deal version and they like everyone else who voted to leave, will need to live with their decision.

If Mrs Batters (nfu president) is correct, no-deal will destroy UK farming.
