Sickening how people vote for the Tories; why do people vote to be made poorer? If they switch to Farage/Brexit they won't do any better. I gather he did publish a manifesto yesterday, but I couldn't be bothered to read it - perhaps I should have done, complacency is dangerous.

OublietteBravo · 10/06/2019 08:19

On r4 they spoke at length about the 40% threshold rise being funded from raising National Insurance. Literally taking money from the less well off to fund the better off.

Let’s call it out for what it is. It’s a tax cut targeted specifically at wealthy pensioners (who don’t pay national insurance). I wonder how many Tory party members fall into this category Hmm

ContinuityError · 10/06/2019 08:24

Don't forget that the government put out a leaflet to all households, saying that the NHS would have cuts, that pensioners would have cuts, that we would have half a million unemployed

Bollocks. Dunno what leaflet Leadsom read but none of that was in the leaflet I received.

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/515068/why-the-government-believes-that-voting-to-remain-in-the-european-union-is-the-best-decision-for-the-uk.pdf

Why are these bare faced liars allowed to continue with this rubbish unchallenged?

They are always quick to recite the This is your decision. The Government will implement what you decide. line from that same leaflet though.

ContinuityError · 10/06/2019 08:29

All the BXP has done is given someone the job of being plasticine monitor in charge of thinking about a manifesto.

Songsofexperience · 10/06/2019 08:38

On Bojo and the 40p threshold... I am fortunate enough to have got to that level of earnings. Supporting this would make me feel like Judas accepting his 30 pieces of silver.
So angry! Not only would he No Deal us, turn our back on our closest trading partners and insult them in the process, wreck the economy, wreck the NHS, but in doing so he would be betraying those leavers - as in those very people he targeted with that bloody bus- desperate for a positive change. There's no word for that level of cynicism.

Peregrina · 10/06/2019 08:48

I am a pensioner, although I wouldn't class myself as wealthy - and no amount of Tory bribes will make me vote for them.

lonelyplanetmum · 10/06/2019 08:49

Why are these bare faced liars allowed to continue with this rubbish unchallenged?

If predictions are correct a bare faced liar will be rewarded with the most honourable office in the country.

The reasons for lack of challenge are:

  1. There is an offence that governs civil servants etc but there is actually no offence that properly covers MPs lying.
  1. MPs accountability to their constituents comes from the ballot box.And we like to repeatedly vote for a liar or two.
  1. The rules set out by the Committee on Standards in Public Life for MPs don't seem to be enforced. MPs are supposed to follow the seven principles of public life which are: Selflessness, Integrity, Objectivity, Accountability, Openness, Honesty and Leadership. Ha bloody ha.
Peregrina · 10/06/2019 08:52

They are always quick to recite the This is your decision. The Government will implement what you decide. line from that same leaflet though.

In exactly the same way that they forget the bit in the 2015 Manifesto about supporting the Single Market, and enfranchising voters who had been overseas for 15 years or more.

Piggywaspushed · 10/06/2019 09:28

The leaflet Leadsom mentioned does exist : I know because I photocopied it for a media lesson at the time. It was not produced by the Leave campaign, put it that way.

Basilpots · 10/06/2019 09:36

Predictably my MP has hitched his caravan up to Johnson.

Their Facebook page is split.

There is a lot of love on that page for McVey and Leadsome. I had no idea they were that popular in the wider electorate is that the same for anyone else out there ?

1tisILeClerc · 10/06/2019 09:41

Piggywaspushed
Do you happen to have a link to it by any chance. Just for curiousity's sake.
I am presuming it is not the one linked a few posts back as it does not say what Leadsom is claiming, although it could be inferred by being the 'opposite' of remaining.

ContinuityError · 10/06/2019 10:01

1tis Leadsom specifically referred to the Government leaflet sent to all households - that’s the one I linked to.

I think she was actually referring to the findings of the Treasury impact analysis - but that was definitely not in any Government leaflet sent to households and any discussion of it was dismissed as “Project Fear” (and it still is).

BigChocFrenzy · 10/06/2019 10:10

Do many of the wider electorate even know who McVey and Leadsome are,
other than their being vaguely familiar names they hear in the news ?

Songsofexperience · 10/06/2019 10:13

McVey said today she would sack all remainers from the cabinet. Welcome to democracy Brexit style!

StripeyChina · 10/06/2019 10:14

Songs It is sickening, it really is. The poor usually get shafted.
With this process, we ALL do, except super rich BoJo, JRM etc but some of us more than others. I am in despair at Corbyn. Sad times.

Mistigri · 10/06/2019 10:17

It’s a tax cut targeted specifically at wealthy pensioners

It's more a tax targeted at working age people actually (pensioners even wealthy ones typically have lower incomes but are asset rich and have smaller outgoings).

I think this is a crack-handed effort to win back Tory remainers tbh, who are mainly business people many of whom pay higher rate tax.

Songsofexperience · 10/06/2019 10:19

Well, won't do it for me!

1tisILeClerc · 10/06/2019 10:20

ContinuityError
Thanks.
I presume the report of significant drop in UK economy as it shrinks by four times as much as predicted as Brexit paralysis takes hold, as told in the Independent is just 'Project Fear' too.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 10/06/2019 10:39

I don’t think it’s called “Project Fear” anymore. It’s now “This is What the People Voted For”

ContinuityError · 10/06/2019 10:44

Or even “Everyone Knew In 2016 That This Is What the People Voted For”

lonelyplanetmum · 10/06/2019 10:50

Around 55- 60% of the electorate now support remain don't they, yet leading contenders for PM have said:

•sack all remainers from the cabinet ( Mc Vey)

• no deal and don't pay ( Boris)

I guess if the true measure of a democracy is the way it treats its minorities then this is democratic ??? Both potential PMs would enable a minority to squash the majority so that is treating minorities with exceptional priority?

Piggywaspushed · 10/06/2019 10:57

I am afraid I don't have it any more : it was a hard copy through my door and I gave the copies to my students. I do remember it saying exactly what Leadsom said yesterday. it came from my local LibDems, presumably via LibDem head office.

I must declare now so I am not accused of bias that I copied many leaflets! I drew the line at the BNP

ContinuityError · 10/06/2019 11:13

Piggywaspushed But my point is that it wasn’t the official Government leaflet, as Leadsom was making out - and that was the one specifically sent to every household.

(And if you were using the leaflets as teaching material I’d certainly hope that you had a range of views included - although agree re the BNP!)

The official Vote Leave leaflet said they would negotiate a deal before starting any legal process to leave.

Guess who was on the committee of Vote Leave? Yup - Leadsom.

Lots of rewriting of history going on.

CrunchyCarrot · 10/06/2019 11:21

A bit more on the Brexit Party manifesto-to-come, or rather, who is going to write it:

Raab says he will be a buccaneer.

Hereafter known as Dominic Ra-haaaaaaab!
