Westminstenders: The gall of the french

We are full steam ahead with European Parliamentary Elections! Something that seemed unthinkable a few weeks ago.

May still remains adament that they will not happen, but the die has been cast.

May is off to beg Macron and Merkel to back an extension but the French are already stating they want assurances we won't screw thing up for everyone else.

May still is pushing for a deal with Corbyn and a Not a compromise.

Still there is no sign of a breakthrough either for an extension nor over a cross party deal. It drags on, but at least no one has mentioned the WA for ten minutes.

We might yet be in Europe for another Eurovision. Psychologically this feels important.

The ERG are not happy.

Hazard me too...

NigellasGuest · 09/04/2019 22:26

It seems my MP David Gauke has been infiltrated by Ukippers to remove him like Domijic Grieve up the road

TatianaLarina · 09/04/2019 22:27

Just been told by a second (Remain supporting) Labour MP how some female MPs in Leave constituencies receive threats and feel unable to support Remain for fear of violent reprisals. Time MPs had proper security as a matter of course? Hard to see how democracy survives without it.

Kin ell.

They should be reporting this to Labour and demanding security. Some female MPs like Yvette Cooper are in that situation and continue nonetheless. Not that they should have to. I don’t think male MPs are less vulnerable - Stephen Timms, Nigel Jones + Andrew Pennington.

Peregrina · 09/04/2019 22:31

It's very noticeable - it's not Remainers threatening violence, only Brexiters.

GaspodeWonderCat · 09/04/2019 22:33

Living in de Nile:

  1. Extension till Christmas
  2. Local elections - Tories beaten decisively
  3. EP elections - as above & UKIP, Brexit etc
  4. TM resigns - leadership election. ERG sidelined and Dominic Grieve wins.
  5. Britain wins Eurovision
  6. Revoke invoked.

I am calling it my million to one accumulator. Exactly 1 million to 1 (for all the Pratchett fans).

I decided Jeremy quitting would push it over the million to 1 slot ...

Good night all. Hope you get phone working Buffy (ex chevy67)

OublietteBravo · 09/04/2019 22:39

Gaspode - I think you’ve got Eurovision in the wrong place chronologically. It’s before EU elections. (I’m pretty sure we can’t go and beg for it to be postponed).

Iambuffy · 09/04/2019 22:39

Hopefully this is posting....

Switsy · 09/04/2019 22:40

Britain winning the Eurovision is the only one where I thought 'too far!'.

Camomila · 09/04/2019 22:42

I’ve got my polling card through already, if they don’t let me vote I’m going to ring up my local paper and do a ‘sad face’

I can’t imagine that’ll happen though as I live in Brighton.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 09/04/2019 22:43

I think Britain wining Eurovision is one of the least likely on your accumulator Gaspode

We can dream though.

woman19 · 09/04/2019 22:43

I'm not a tory but have been so impressed by Dominic Grieve and even Gauke of late.

Aaron Banks advocated just this strategy with conservative associations, and it looks like they are activating it. Deep pockets.
There are nice folks in these associations they need to stand up.

It's very noticeable
It has been every single day for over 3 years now. Actual and threatened. Travesty to democracy.

Living in de Nile
I pay visits there. It is lovely. Smile

This should be front page news. Our democracy is being torn apart by threats of violence. Terrifying.

Windowsareforcheaters · 09/04/2019 22:44

If Britain win I would demand another vote!

Peregrina · 09/04/2019 22:44

Now it would be good to see Councillors who say they support Leave get a pasting in the Local Elections, followed by a large group of LibDem/Green/Independent/moderate Labour MEPs being elected. It would make the 'will of the people' for Leave look a bit hollow.

RHTawneyonabus · 09/04/2019 22:51

I don’t suppose female MPs are any more at risk than males but they are probably more likely to have experienced male violence and take threats more seriously.

woman19 · 09/04/2019 23:06

I don’t suppose female MPs are any more at risk than males

Jo Cox has been wiped from the cultural and political memory, almost completely.

In this island.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2019 23:09

Male MPs rarely get rape threats

Tonsilss · 09/04/2019 23:11

A Flextension is horrible for business etc, as there is uncertainty about when Brexit will happen.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2019 23:13

Women in public life receive far more threats of violence than their male colleagues

Labour MP Rosie Cooper was also the target of a neo-Nazi murder plot, which was fortunately found out in time
The criminal has been convicted, also for planning to kill a woman police officer who was investigating him for child sex offences.

TatianaLarina · 09/04/2019 23:14

Jo Cox has been wiped from the cultural and political memory, almost completely.

I don’t agree at all. I’m very conscious of her fate and from what I’ve seen many others are too.

TatianaLarina · 09/04/2019 23:16

Women just make more fuss about threats

I don’t think that’s true at all, and da is a different issue.

mrslaughan · 09/04/2019 23:26

I know I am miles behind - I am currently on the other side of the world ...... the people future campaign- believe that has been linked back to Boris?

Home Office - unless you have dealt with them, you really can't understand how much they are actually a law unto themselves, and when's it's your families future- it's very scary. It's why I was never happy about TM becoming PM. She created that environment, and really believe the average Briton does not understand.Angry

woman19 · 09/04/2019 23:32

Hopeful thread, till you get to the fourth tweet.

@BBCkatyaadler
First noises out of the 3 hour long meeting of Ambassadors representing the EU 27 tonight confirms earlier impression: most countries warming towards longer extension ending Dec 2019 or March 2020 /1

France taking tougher position: insisting that the PM presents a credible plan before getting extension from EU. Paris also thinks safeguards (conditions) EU wants to impose on extension aren’t yet sufficient /2

NB Talks amongst EU ambassadors can and will be upstaged by face-face meeting amongst EU leaders themselves. On #Brexit they have tended to take a tougher line than their Brussels-based diplomats /3

Much also riding on PM’s performance We'll have crashed out by teatime then

She’ll make a presentation to EU leaders at start of summit. They then quiz her (on cross-party talks with Corbyn etc). Only when she leaves the room - and influenced by the impression she has made- EU leaders will then debate extension /4

PestyMachtubernahme · 09/04/2019 23:37

Check what TM is wearing tomorrow Woman if it brown she will be going for aunty on the sofa. Otherwise she will probably tell them off.
