Westminstenders: The gall of the french

We are full steam ahead with European Parliamentary Elections! Something that seemed unthinkable a few weeks ago.

May still remains adament that they will not happen, but the die has been cast.

May is off to beg Macron and Merkel to back an extension but the French are already stating they want assurances we won't screw thing up for everyone else.

May still is pushing for a deal with Corbyn and a Not a compromise.

Still there is no sign of a breakthrough either for an extension nor over a cross party deal. It drags on, but at least no one has mentioned the WA for ten minutes.

We might yet be in Europe for another Eurovision. Psychologically this feels important.

The ERG are not happy.

'REAL DISCUSSIONS' TO COME

“Consensus blocked by Macron. Need to find unanimous solution,” according to one EU diplomat.

“Real discussions” are now coming up, said another EU diplomat.

"Escape clutches" 😂

Problem is that Brexshitters can't find a wide-open door,
so keep banging their head trying to charge through the walls

OublietteBravo · 10/04/2019 22:39

Well this one is, because it’ll be full soon...

But Westminstenders - not yet.

CordeliaEarhart · 10/04/2019 22:40

BCF, if they are deadlocked they can't approve a short extension. If so many are pro long extension then they (presumably) have good reasons for not wanting a short one. Such as - short means businesses have to keep up their contingencies (like us with our stockpiles but on a much bigger scale), EP is undermined by elections of the UK MEPs who don't then take their seats, they have other urgent business and Brexit is taking over, Brexit takes over the whole EP election process, UK unlikely to actually pass the deal during a short extension.

Personally (and obs I'm not an EU leader), I'd be going for long extension or hit the No Deal button now. EU have said that businesses are ready for it, and the constant "nearly No Deal" game we're playing is very costly. Possibly more so than a No Deal this week (for EU27, not U.K.).

BigChocFrenzy · 10/04/2019 22:40

You can respect someone without necessarily giving them all they ask for

Especially if they are the kind of CF that MN warns about

Ah no wonder the sniffy Fox idolised Trump.

Cordelia Those wanting a long extension would probably all accept a short extension if the alternative were NO extension,
i.e. almost certainly No Deal

CordeliaEarhart · 10/04/2019 22:45

I really hope so, BCF. I keep experiencing calm and then a moment of panic when I realise all it takes is one leader to become so frustrated at the process that they just say no. Imagine if it were Westminster politicians deciding!

RedToothBrush · 10/04/2019 22:45

BBC newsnight @bbcnewsnight
Emmanuel Macron has pushed for a definitive end to the extension of Article 50 by the end of June.

“That is a direct challenge to a consensus that had been forming… that there should be a long extension,” says our political editor Nick Watt

Shortest I'd expect is 22 May - to avoid making a mockery of the EP, as their president objected to !

That would give an extra 40 days after 12 April for May & Corbyn to decide if they can agree to pass a WA & PD

No Deal on 12 April is v v unlikely

Butterymuffin · 10/04/2019 22:50

Macron is on his own, though. And while it takes only one to veto, everyone else is rowing in the other direction. Mirror reporter quotes an EU source saying 'it'll take hours before we pull him down from his tree'. That does suggest though they expect him to come down eventually.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/04/2019 22:52

Macron wants to give May the extension she asked for

Shock headlines about French bullying !

Next to headlines about the EU keeping us in ....

TM has been on bestest behaviour

This time Theresa May “didn’t upset leaders as it happened in other occasions,” said an EU diplomat. Her answers remained vague and “she didn’t provide a plan B” in case cross-party talks fail, nor a deadline, but the main difference is that “leaders know they have to give her an extension, so it doesn’t make much of a difference.”

Re earlier post, was misunderstanding from my MP rather than porkies as such. Provided interesting insight into machinations around indicative votes process.
