We are full steam ahead with European Parliamentary Elections! Something that seemed unthinkable a few weeks ago.

May still remains adament that they will not happen, but the die has been cast.

May is off to beg Macron and Merkel to back an extension but the French are already stating they want assurances we won't screw thing up for everyone else.

May still is pushing for a deal with Corbyn and a Not a compromise.

Still there is no sign of a breakthrough either for an extension nor over a cross party deal. It drags on, but at least no one has mentioned the WA for ten minutes.

We might yet be in Europe for another Eurovision. Psychologically this feels important.

The ERG are not happy.

What's not going to happen?

Have I missed something?

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2019 21:31

Looks like the effect of JRM's wrecking tweet is that the Uk will have tougher conditions

Who's the saboteur, Jacob ? Hmm

Deborah Haynes@haynesdeborah

NEW:
This tweet by ‪*@JacobReesMogg‬ came up at meeting of EU27 foreign/Europe ministers with ‪*@MichelBarnier‬ in Luxembourg.

A source says it’s prompted certain countries to want stronger conditions put on UK to ensure good behaviour in return for granting ‪#Brexit‬ extension 1/2

The source said:
“It has given those here that want to take offence a reason to be offended.”

Incredible how random tweet threats by Brexiteers are actually having a real-world impact & hampering@theresa_may‬’s negotiating chances with EU

Someone had fun on Wikipedia! Nailed that idiot Francois.

DGR if you mean Brexit - no i don’t think it’s going to happen.

The last 48 hours of so have made me think that more & more.

Now I pray.

Littlespaces · 09/04/2019 21:44

Is this what we want for the UK?

One thing leads to another and before long you are in a fascist state.

In the last EU elections we ended up with 3 Tory MEPs, 3 UKIP MEPs and 1 labour MEP. Only one of those UKIP MEPs is still UKIP. One is now in Farage’s Brexit party. The other appears to have defected to.... the SDP Confused

Ellie56 · 09/04/2019 21:45

DGR if you mean Brexit - no i don’t think it’s going to happen.

Do you mean you don't think it's going to happen on Friday or do you think it's not going to happen at all?

Tonsilss · 09/04/2019 21:47

I see that Portugal is encouraging British tourists with adverts headed "BRELCOME".

littlespaces I don't understand why that's not incitement to murder, or some such incitement charge
but other Brexit poliicians have also called for Remainers to be killed, so far with impunity

Peregrina · 09/04/2019 22:02

the question arose because if we had left on 29 March, EU citizens wouldn't have been entitled to vote

Is that the case? At the moment the right for various groups to vote is enshrined in electoral law. I am not yet aware of them having got round to changing this yet. The poll cards for the elections have already been delivered and the postal votes will go out next week. As someone has said, there is a mark on the register to show if you are not entitled to vote in a GE. Now, it wouldn't surprise me, since poll clerks are often people who don't normally do that job, if they don't know what the rules are, and a jobsworth decides not to give EU citizens their voting form.

Littlespaces · 09/04/2019 22:03

I know!

And this.....
@JolyonMaugham
Just been told by a second (Remain supporting) Labour MP how some female MPs in Leave constituencies receive threats and feel unable to support Remain for fear of violent reprisals. Time MPs had proper security as a matter of course? Hard to see how democracy survives without it.

BestIsWest · 09/04/2019 22:04

News at 10. An extension until the end of the year. So we can have the same conversation day after day after day. What more could we want?

To remain perhaps?

woman19 · 09/04/2019 22:05

It's not going to happen is it
Bibi being re elected in Israel? Looking a bit sticky. The 'brexit' thingy? No way.

There are times when you need to give time time.

Fleabag123 · 09/04/2019 22:11

Argh, my head hurts.

Surely an extension till 30/6 would see her back in Brussels 4 days before then begging for another? What’s the harm (upsetting the hardline Tories aside which I don’t see as a negative) of getting a long extension with the option to come out earlier if a deal is passed by Parliament?

HazardGhost · 09/04/2019 22:17

I'm quietly optimistic... or living in denial.

NoWordForFluffy · 09/04/2019 22:25

I just want to be able to start eating my bloody stockpile! And be able to see what's in the bottom of my freezer without removing half of sodding Iceland's stock to get there!

A nice flextension will suit my purposes.
